Attendance
Getting into the habit of daily attendance helps to:
- reduce stress
- make it easier to connect with friends and teachers
- support learning
Maintaining regular attendance not only enhances a student's academic performance but also fosters a sense of responsibility and discipline that are crucial for future success. By attending school, students are better positioned to maximize their educational opportunities and achieve their full potential. Please see these attendance reminders to support a successful school year.
TO PARENTS:
Early Dismissal Procedure
If a student must leave class during the school day, a request for early dismissal is to be submitted by the parent in advance to the Attendance Secretary through the electronic High School Early Dismissal Form. Please note that this request is for early dismissals and should not be used for extended pre-planned absences.
For extended pre-planned absences, please use the New Albany Plain Local Schools Planned Absence Form. The links for these forms and additional attendance information are available on the attendance page of our website.
For an absence to be marked as excused, the absence reason must meet one of the criteria established by the Board of Education (Board Policy 5200).
TO STUDENTS:
Sign-In Procedure
Students who arrive late to school or are returning from an early dismissal should sign in to the Welcome Center or in E Office.
Opt-Out Sign in Procedure
Students who have first period Opt-Out are required to sign in to the Welcome Center or E Office when they arrive on campus to be considered present for the school day. Students who have seventh period Opt-Out do not need to sign out after sixth period.
Tardies
Each quarter students will be given four free tardies to school. On the fifth and subsequent tardies, discipline will be handed out, ranging from after-school detention to ALC. Communication about tardies will be delivered to students and parents via email.
Cell Phones
One of our focus points is to enhance student engagement in the classroom. Constant electronic interruption interferes with students' ability to deeply engage in the learning process.
To support learning in the classroom, the expectation at New Albany High School is that students do not use cell phones during class periods, including study centers. For students who bring cell phones to class, each classroom has a cell phone storage caddy where the phones must be placed when students enter the classroom. Students may use cell phones between class periods and during lunch periods.
We are asking for your help in communicating these expectations with your children about cell phone use at school.
Student ID Cards and E+R=O Lanyards
For safety purposes, staff and students are required to wear their student ID on their E+R=O lanyard on a daily basis. Freshman and new students receive new IDs when they come to the high school. All other students will wear their ID from the previous school year.
High School students who are new to the District had a picture taken during New Student Orientation, and will receive an email when their ID is available.
Current students in grades 10, 11, & 12 who need a new ID can click the following: Request New Student ID or scan the QR code available in the Welcome Center and in the main HS Office.
Nest Period
Nest is our proactive program that is designed to support student achievement, student growth and student well being. It is a time for everyone to press pause and take a few minutes away from academics to build relationships, check-in, and gain access to school information.
Nest meets the requirements set by the Ohio Department of Education to provide Tier 1 Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which serves as the foundation for behavior and academic excellence. This period also supports our initiative to create a space where each student feels an enhanced sense of belonging.
The activities for Nest can be found on our Nest calendar weekly. Below you will see some of the activities that occur in Nest:
Daily announcements
Safety drills (fire, tornado, lock down, etc.)
Share information with students
Celebrate students/school achievements
SchooLinks: College & career planning platform
Parking Permit Application
If you were not able to pick up your parking permit during the Kickoff event, you may do so in the HS E Office on the first day of school.
Back-to-School Parking Alert
As we prepare for a new school year, New Albany Police would like to remind parents that Market Square parking is intended for customer and employee parking. Proper signage is in place and towing will be enforced. Click here to learn about other parking options for students.
Clinic
Medication at School
In order for students to take medications at New Albany Schools, we require parent and physician signatures on the medication administration form (Click here: Request to Dispense Medication Form). All prescribed and over-the-counter medications are to be delivered to the school clinic by an adult in the original container and must be taken in the clinic. Students are not permitted to carry their own medications. The only exception is for the following emergency medications: epinephrine, inhalers, and insulin.
12th Grade Immunization Compliance
Proof of your meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine was due prior to the start of 12th grade. Failure to provide your updated immunization record prior to September 3rd will result in exclusion from school.
Please reach out to the high school nurse Martha Bohman if you have any questions and send all vaccine records to bohman.5@napls.us.
School and College Counseling Updates
Student Schedules
Students should follow their schedule as it is in Power School for their classes. Returning students were given access to their schedules in May and were provided the opportunity to request changes at that time. If you would like to request a schedule change, please submit the request here.
All schedule change requests must be submitted by Monday, August 26th. Due to the large volume of requests, those that are essential for graduation, athletic eligibility, academic misplacements, and special programs will get priority. All requests are subject to class size and availability.
Please continue to check your schedule in PowerSchool for updates. Counselors will be working through the requests in the coming days.
