Quarterly Newsletter: September 2024
From the Desk of the Executive Director
This past quarter was filled with summer college and career exploration, planning, and kicking off the school year across the 13 Jackson County School Districts!
When you last heard from us in June, we were just launching our summer melt services, including our "Finish Your FAFSA" initiative, on-the-ground support, engagement with alumni about the Michigan Reconnect program, and outreach with our partners at the MLK Recreation Center, Isaiah's Hub, and the YMCA. This quarter also brought the announcement of the new Michigan Community College Guarantee. Check out the newsletter below to learn more about this scholarship and see what we accomplished in partnership with students and adults through these initiatives.
As we launched into the school year, our advisors have been busy reconnecting with the 13 Jackson County School Districts—hosting planning meetings, attending back-to-school events, delivering classroom workshops, and meeting one-on-one with seniors to discuss their post-secondary plans. Be sure to check out insights from the Senior Profile Survey to see what students are planning for their futures. We've also kicked off our Juniors Over the Local Circuit visits, adding more local colleges to our list of tour stops for county juniors.
Don't miss our upcoming events, including our monthly Virtual County Workshops series, Center events, and more—all free of charge and open to everyone!
We thank you for your continued partnership in supporting students and adults as they start their futures!

Summer Recap and New State Funding Initiatives
Summer Recap
This summer, the College and Career Access Center (CCAC) was busy bringing hands-on learning and college and career planning directly to the community! We partnered with the Jackson YMCA, Isaiah's Hub, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center to teach robotics and college/career curriculum to kids, giving them a fun and engaging way to explore their futures. From building robots to learning about different career paths, students had the opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge in a supportive and interactive environment.
Additionally, we hosted two FAFSA and MI Reconnect Completion Events at the MLK Jr. Recreation Center—one on July 30th and another on August 15th. These events provided critical support to individuals navigating financial aid and scholarship opportunities, with 21 community members attending to get one-on-one assistance in completing their applications. Through these efforts, the CCAC continues to empower students and adults alike, ensuring they have the resources they need to pursue their educational and career goals.

Business of the Quarter
Founded in November 2021, The Procrastination Bakery (TPB) emerged from a time of global uncertainty, when pivoting to new ways of working from home became essential. The bakery’s owner, Brandi Gaston, a passionate food lover and service-oriented woman, decided to channel her culinary talents into an in-home business. Over three years, TPB has grown from a small operation into a thriving venture, now on its way to launching a Savory Dessert Food Trailer with the support of small business grants from Michigan Tribe and Lean Rocket Lab's Local Fellows Program. The future looks bright, with plans to participate in Jackson County's Food Truck Tuesdays and cater special events across the region.
The bakery's inspiration is deeply rooted in family, particularly Brandi’s grandmother, whose love for cooking and gathering the family around food left a lasting impact. The brand colors of TPB even reflect her grandmother’s kitchen, a nod to the legacy that fuels the bakery’s heart. Now, as a mother of four, Brandi hopes to set an example for her children, showing them that grit, dedication, and passion can transform dreams into reality. Along with offering delicious treats, TPB is committed to giving back through charitable work, such as Cakes For A Cause, a nonprofit that provides free birthday cakes for children in foster care. This mission of service, paired with the joy of becoming "the family baker" for many of her customers, defines the heart and soul of TPB.
As for advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, Brandi emphasizes stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing boldness, creativity, and learning. "Go for it," she says, “you miss the shots you don’t take." Whether she’s baking for market days or filling custom orders, she’s proving that success comes from following your passion, learning from others, and giving back to the community.
