FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
We are beyond thrilled to share some fantastic news—Edison Language Academy has been named a 2025 California Distinguished School for our outstanding work in Closing the Achievement Gap! This prestigious honor was awarded to only 336 schools across the entire state of California, and we are especially proud to be the only school in SMMUSD to receive this recognition!
While this award is based on our students' impressive achievements in English language arts and math based on state test scores, it doesn’t tell the full story of what makes our school truly exceptional. As a dual immersion program, our students are not just mastering English—they are also learning how to speak, read and write in Spanish. They’re building socio-cultural competence by learning about the rich diversity of the world, all while developing a deep pride in themselves and their heritage. And through the arts, our students are discovering their creative voices, exploring their artistic expression, and growing as well-rounded individuals.
This recognition is a true reflection of our primary mission: to ensure that ALL of our students succeed, academically and personally. It is an honor to be celebrated for our collective efforts to provide every student with the opportunity to thrive in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Thank you for being an essential part of this incredible journey—we couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of our amazing students, families, and staff!
With immense pride,
Directora Ipiña
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
RETURNING TO EDISON IN 2025-26?
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES: We are also collecting any information we need to consider when making class placements. When the teachers and principal build classes we consider: 1) the needs of individual children; 2) creating classes of equitable size with a good emotional and behavioral dynamics, a language balance, and mix of instructional needs, and; 3) separating children who may need a break from each other or who do not work well together in the same classroom. If you believe that there is information that would be important for the school to consider to make a good class placement for your child next year, please tell us using this survey. This information might include health, emotional needs, family circumstances, peer relations, etc. The principal appreciates your candor and will treat your response as confidential. However, please keep in mind that parents do NOT pick their children’s teacher. It is also not automatic that a younger child will be placed with an older sibling's teacher. We simply have too many younger siblings to make that automatic. However, if you have an older child who was placed with a teacher and you feel that the same placement for your younger child would NOT be a good fit, then please state that on the form and we will do our best to take that into consideration.
Please fill out one survey for EACH CHILD in your family enrolled at Edison.
RESPOND BY FRIDAY, APRIL 25TH.
CAREER DAY THIS THURSDAY!
This Thursday, we’re rolling out our very first Bilingual Career Day, and we couldn’t be more excited! We're welcoming a group of amazing bilingual volunteers who will be visiting each classroom to share their careers and experiences. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore different professions while learning how speaking two languages can open doors for their future. A big thank you to Melanie Overby (Keira’s mom in Kindergarten) for organizing this awesome event and all the parents and community members that will be participating!
DRESS AS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK CHARACTER ON FRIDAY
This week we will be celebrating Read Across America. Students wil have guest readers from Rotary Reads during their library time, and then on Friday, all students and staff are invited to dress as their favorite book character.
MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL - SHARE YOUR CULTURE WITH US!
Edison's first-ever Multicultural Festival will be on Friday, May 16th from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. While the event is still a few months away, we're already planning this incredible celebration where each family has the chance to share their unique culture with our community.
We are looking for families to host a cultural table representing their culture. Imagine vibrant displays showcasing folk art, crafts, traditional clothing, musical instruments, photos, books, toys, and decorations—whatever brings your culture to life! Every table will offer delicious bite-sized food samples, so our students can taste the flavors of your homeland. Our students will travel through the festival with a passport, experiencing the world in one exciting afternoon.
We can’t make this event happen without YOU! Sign up now to be part of this amazing opportunity! We’ll pair families with similar heritage so you can collaborate on creating your country’s display. Let’s work together to enrich our students' understanding of their own cultures and of those around them!

WEDNESDAY PARENT MEETINGS - NO MEETING THIS WEEK!
Each Wednesday, from 8:30-10:00 am, we have parent meetings in the Library. All parents are invited. Meetings are bilingual and there is a Zoom option at this link.
This week we won't be having a meeting. We have been so busy lately, we are going to take a break and resume our meetings after spring break. Enjoy the extra time!
