Guidelines and Hints for Discussion Questions
In order to get full credit on the discussions assignments, you will need to be sure to do a couple of things...
- Read and make sure you follow the directions provided in the prompt. If the directions tell you to write a paragraph, you will be expected to do just that.
- When it comes time to respond to the posts of your peers, write a substantive response. "I agree." "Good job!" and "Cool, I didn't think about that" DO NOT COUNT as substantive responses and although you are being supportive and encouraging of your peers, you will not get any participation credit.
- For both your original response and the responses to your peers, write a few sentences that clearly extends the conversation and shows your teacher that you really have a good understanding of the topic discussed.
- When you write your posts, also be sure to use proper grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Try not to use the same type of language that you use for texting - You should spell out all of your words.
- Finally, make sure your posts are clear. You will need to articulate your points and respond in a timely manner.
Trigonometry of General Triangles Discussion 2
To answer this question, you must recall what you have learned about oblique or non-right triangles. Have you used trig to solve them? If so, how was trig used? If not, why can't trig be used?
Trigonometric Identity 1
To answer this question you need to compare and contrast an identity to an equation? How are they alike, how are they different? How can you tell the difference? You must also provide good examples.

Hints for This Weeks' Task
OR
ON YOUR OWN PAPER: WRITE THE PROBLEM, SHOW YOUR WORK, AND BOX THE ANSWER.
UPLOAD YOUR COMPLETED WORK INTO THE APPROPRIATE DROPBOX
Proving Law of Cosines Task
You will apply the Law of Cosines to 24 problems. In #1 - 18, you are given a labeled picture. Identify what is given and what you need to find. Use that information to choose the best Law of Cosines formula. Some questions may require you to determine "two" unknowns. You have to think about how to find that information. Use your knowledge of trig. In #19-24, you are given the information (known and what to find) and no picture. You will solve in the same way as #1-18.
Proving Cosine Addition and Subtraction Identity Task
#1. Are they acute, obtuse, straight or right triangles. How do you know?
#2. Look at the angle, what two angles make that angle. Create a number sentence to describe (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division)
#3. What is the ratio for sine? Substitute the actual parts from the triangle into that ratio
#4. Look at the given figure to determine
a-c - read and follow the explicit instructions
a-b - read and follow the explicit instructions
#1 and 2 Use your formula to complete these two problems
Write your two formulas for Cosine Addition and Subtraction
Assessments (Tests or Projects) This Week
- Review the problems from the two quizzes in this unit, your notes, the course content (do the interactive quizzlets for review) and/or view the videos posted in this and the previous newsletter. Make sure that you have reviewed quiz feedback and attend synch sessions for clarification and practice games/activities.
OR
Trigonometry of General Triangles Project (Combining Lots)
All work must be done BY HAND; No electronic reproductions other than a graph.
Draw the diagram and label what is given (include units of measurement). Use the Law of Sines and/or Cosines to determine the measures of the missing sides: DE, CB, AB, CG, GF, FE, DA, AC, and AF. Use the area formula to determine the areas of each triangle. Determine the area of the combined lots. Remember to use the proper units of measure in your answer.
