Greendale Elementary Receives Highest Achievement Award
On Thursday, October 24, the Virginia Board of Education recognized 141 schools for their high achievement and continued improvement as part of its Exemplar School Recognition Program. Washington County Public Schools is honored that Greendale Elementary School and Holston High School received the 2024-2025 Board of Education Highest Achievement Award. Pumpkin Donation
We would like to thank the Lowe Family for their generous donation of pumpkins. Every child in the school was sent home with their very own pumpkin, and there were plenty of pumpkins for decoration, as well.
Reading with Abingdon High School Football Players
GES was happy to welcome the Abingdon High School football team to our school. They visited many classrooms and read books with students.
Family Fun Night
Family Fun Night at the Anderson Family Farm took place on October 22. This evening was a collaborative effort of Title I, CIS, and PTO. All groups came together to provide a special Halloween read-aloud of "the Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin," a brief reading lesson, and an overview of the Title I program. In addition for the evening, there was a free barbecue meal cooked by Sheriff Andis, hay rides, a corn maze, a petting zoo area, and a corn bin. Nearly 300 students and family members enjoyed the evening. We are very grateful to the Anderson family for hosting this amazing event.

Officer Tilson showed students how Kala was trained to work and sniff out various things. Students who had perfect attendance got to spend more time with Kala and see the patrol car in which Kala travels.
Red Ribbon Week
Every year, Red Ribbon Week is held to remind students to be drug free and stop bullying in its' tracks. This year students had different dress up days such as: Wear Red Day to kick off the week; Hats Off to Being Drug Free; Sock it to Drugs; and Team Up Against Drugs (wear Falcons or Lions colors).
Vocabulary Parade
October culminated with our vocabulary parade on Halloween. Students chose a word and dressed in a costume that reflected that word. This year, as a special treat, students were able to stop at various stations during the parade and trick-or-treat.
