News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
As we near the end of the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, it is time we begin looking at the school calendar for the 2025-2026 & 2026-2027 school year.
As we consider calendar options, it is very important to us to know what aspects of a school calendar are the highest priorities for you!
The information you provide will be used by the District Calendar Committee to develop calendars and make recommendations to the school board. Your input on this survey is an important part of the calendar development process and will be open through December 20th. Churchill County School Board, in an open meeting, will make the decision on which calendar to adopt.
Please follow the link to begin the survey: https://forms.gle/vYXB2s3QFnzGPgCj8
We value your thoughts and look forward to using the information you provide in this survey to create calendars to present to the school board.
Thank you for your time and support! We could not do what we do for our students without you!

Message from our Partners at Care Solace π
As winter break draws near, we know the pressure of finals season is building. Balancing exams, projects, and deadlines can feel overwhelming, so we want to remind you to prioritize your well-being as you push through these last few weeks.
Here are some tips to help you stay balanced during finals:
- Set small, achievable goals. Break tasks into manageable steps with a daily to-do list to keep on track.
- Maintain healthy routines. Donβt skip meals, get enough sleep, and stay active with some form of movement each day.
- Carve out time for yourself. Even 15 minutes to unwindβwhether itβs a walk, chatting with a friend, or enjoying a coffeeβcan help recharge your mind.
- Manage your schedule wisely. Plan ahead and be comfortable saying βnoβ if extra commitments feel too much.
- Seek support when you need it. Acknowledge your emotions and talk with someone if things feel heavy.
Whatever challenges you may be facing, remember: Youβre not alone. Weβre here to support you. If you or someone you know needs help, you can reach out to your teacher, school counselor, or school administrator.
Additionally, Care Solace offers complimentary and confidential care coordination services to connect you or your loved ones with mental health providers:

- Visit: www.caresolace.com/churchillcsd
- Search for providers or click "Book Appointment" to get help via video chat, phone, or email.
For immediate mental health support:

- Text "Hello" or "Home" to 741741 to connect with a crisis counselor.
- Call or chat online with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988: suicidepreventionlifeline.org

Your mental health and well-being are just as important as your studies, especially during stressful times. We're rooting for your success and here to support you every step of the way. Good luck with finalsβyouβve got this!
IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.

LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Attendance Reminder for Families β
As we approach the "giving" season, we want to encourage our families to review the health information provided above from our Chief School Nurse. Additionally, we'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.

π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

Assistant Superintendent Highlight π
Just a few weeks until our holiday break, and the focus on academics and rigor are still a priority for our schools. Each time I visit our classrooms, I am continually impressed with the heightened attention of learning, student engagement and creativity. Recently, I visited our schools to witness the student-led learning and the focus on standards-based teaching, and I was not disappointed! At EC Best, I observed exemplars of a classroom promise, created by the students in Ms. Lambsonβs class and I also observed principal Brad Barton engage in student-led reading. At Numa, we actively listened to a student recite their classroom vision in Ms. Strasdinβs class, while CCMSβ Ms. Strittenberger engaged students through math card games. I am continually inspired by the efforts of our teachers, and the engagement of our students. Despite the holiday approaching, we are unending in our commitment to utilize every minute to ensure our students grow academically.
These achievements could not be accomplished without the hard work of our teachers and principals. Many of our educators and leaders have recently been voted as Fallonβs Best; a recognition for their upstanding work, spirit, and dedication to learning. Three of our principals were recognized: Ms. Kimi Melendy (LES), Mr. Brad Barton (ECB), and Mr. Shawn Purrell (Numa). Steve Johnson (CCHS), Amy Nichols (CCMS), Jennifer Olsen (CCMS), Emily Judd (CCMS), Julieann Chappell (LES), and Shannon Windriver (LES) were all recognized among the "Best of Fallon" teachers. Congratulations to you all!
All in all, these observations are just the βtip of the icebergβ when it comes to our community and how we embrace our youth. Thanks to our wrap-around commitment, our students receive the best of the best for learning and innovation.
As I close this blurb, I am grateful for our team, the passion and commitment we give to our students and their families. I wish each and every one of you a restful holiday!
School Highlights π

The library received a brand new sound-proof study pod, which offers many benefits for students. From being a quiet place to record something for an assignment, to studying, or just having a few minutes to block out the world the pod is a great tool for students to eliminate distractions from the world around them and allow them the ability to truly focus. We are so thankful for the Nevada Library Services and Technology Act (NSLA) grant provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Nevada State Library and Archives that made this happen.

Fifth graders kicked off the holiday season with a Christmas-themed treasure hunt. Each class is competing to uncover the hidden treasure that will be revealed on December 19th, just in time for winter break. Each day students receive a clue and have to work together to try and discover where the clue leads them, hoping each day, that they are getting closer to finding the treasure.

Students in Jennifer Vasquezβs Kindergarten class are making a trip around the world, learning about how different countries celebrate Christmas. The students are virtually traveling around the world to a different country every day to experience different Christmas traditions and cultures. The students are excited to come to class each day because they are eager to see what country we are βvisitingβ next. They have really enjoyed learning about the differences and similarities each country has when it comes to celebrating Christmas.
