Principals Message:
CSD Proclamation Reaffirming Support of Each District Student and Family
Happy Snowy Saturday, Eagles!
Great job, everyone, for your flexibility and support this week as snow-related changes impacted our CHS sports and activities. There have been many stories of CHS students helping throughout the Centennial community during these snowy days. These actions reflect the positive, supportive culture that makes a real difference in our greater community. Your efforts are recognized and appreciated, aligning with CSD’s Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27: Goal #2: Supporting Every Student’s Well-being & Inclusion, as well as the Centennial Profile of a Graduate. Well done, Eagles!
Winter Sports Highlights
Our teams have done an outstanding job as the winter sports season begins to wrap up. Congratulations to all of our Eagle swimmers who competed last Wednesday in the NWOC District Championships at Parkrose (See below for more details). We had a total of 24 JV and Varsity swimmers participate, with two athletes winning their events and advancing to the OSAA State Championships next week:
- Payton Brookfield in the 100 Butterfly
- Ari Schrenk in the 100 Freestyle
Other highlights include:
- Girls Freshman Basketball demonstrating great teamwork.
- The NWOC Novice Wrestling Tournament, held at CHS on Wednesday, showcasing new talent—thank you to everyone who made it possible.
- Varsity Wrestling’s victory against Hood River on Tuesday’s Senior Night (See Pictures).
A huge thank you to our students, staff, families, and community members for your continued support of our Eagles. Your enthusiasm strengthens our community and reflects Goal #3: Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership in CSD’s Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27.
Good luck to our CHS Wrestling team, competing today in Canby at the NWOC Championship Meet, and to our CHS Cheerleading team, competing at the OSAA State Competition on Sunday!
Spring Sports Registration
Spring sports registration is going strong, with many students signing up to try out. The more students who participate, the stronger our CHS teams become. If you haven’t signed up yet, be sure to do so today and support our school!
Black Student Union (BSU) and Black History Month Activities
A huge thank you to our CHS Black Student Union (BSU) for organizing last week’s Advisory video and activities in honor of Black History Month. Your dedication to celebrating diversity, educating our community, and creating inclusive spaces is truly appreciated. This important work aligns with Goal #3: Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.
CHS Art Students Showcase Work at District Office
Great job to Ms. Castillo-Harden and our CHS Art students for organizing a stunning artwork display at the Centennial School District Office on Wednesday. The display includes pieces from Art 1, Art 2, Studio Art, Sculpture 1, and Sculpture 2, featuring:
- Food sculptures made from toilet paper.
- Modular sculptures created from recycled food boxes.
- Metal and glass drawings using charcoal and graphite.
- Street Art-style name designs in colored pencil.
Students studied famous artists related to their work and completed artist studies to showcase their learning and perspectives. This project highlights Goal #4: Ensuring Equitable Access to High-Quality Academics in the CSD Strategic Plan. If you have a chance, stop by the Centennial School District Office (18135 SE Brooklyn St, Portland, OR 97236) to see our Eagles' fantastic work!
Recognizing Academic Achievements at CSD School Board Meeting
Congratulations to Emanuel Tsegaye, Lorenzo Mashadda, and Olivia Phan, who were recognized at Wednesday night’s school board meeting for their academic achievements and scholarship awards. Their success exemplifies what it means to be an Eagle, exceeding expectations and aligning with Goal #3: Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership, as well as the Centennial Profile of a Graduate (See below for more details).
CHS MESA Students Present at CSD School Board Meeting
Congratulations to our CHS MESA students who presented at Wednesday’s school board meeting about their Explore STEAM at PSU experience. This hands-on, day-long STEAM event at Portland State University’s Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science provided an incredible opportunity to engage with engineering and technology. Their participation supports Goal #4: Ensuring Equitable Access to High-Quality Academics and the vision outlined in the Centennial Profile of a Graduate. Thank you all for representing what it means to be an Eagle!
Our 9th–11th grade students have begun the process of forecasting classes for next year. Be sure to check out the CHS Counselor’s Corner section in this newsletter for more details on the process and important information to help guide course selection.

Emanuel Tsegaye, Lorenzo Mashadda and Olivia Phan Recognized at CSD School Board
Congratulations to Emanuel Tsegaye, Lorenzo Mashadda, and Olivia Phan, who were recognized at Wednesday night’s school board meeting for their academic achievements and scholarship awards. Their success exemplifies what it means to be an Eagle, exceeding expectations and aligning with Goal #3: Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership, as well as the Centennial Profile of a Graduate
Emanuel Tsegaye - is a Senior at CHS who has applied and been admitted to Yale University in New Haven, CT. This is one of the top universities in the US and is an Ivy League school. Financially speaking, Ivy League schools meet 100% of the financial needs of a student. As a result, if Emanuel chooses to go to Yale, he only has to come up with a couple of thousand dollars a year to attend a school that has a cost of attendance of just over 87k per year. Don’t worry, though; he is a finalist for MANY scholarships that he has a very good chance to earn, to where he will likely get paid to go to college starting next fall. Emanuel is also still waiting to hear back from Harvard, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins so that he can fully consider all of his college options. In the past week, we were notified that Emanuel is a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and is also a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist. Emanuel plans to study BioEngineering or Biochemistry and is a great example of caring, intellect, hard work, and dedication.
The QuestBridge National College Match is a college admission and scholarship process through which high-achieving students can be admitted early with full-ride four-year scholarships to some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. Through the National College Match application, students who have excelled academically despite financial hardship can highlight their unique story and stand out in the college admissions process. In the fall, QuestBridge selects top applicants as Finalists, and students are able to rank up to 15 colleges to be “matched” – admitted early with a Match Scholarship – to the college that appears highest on their list and is able to match with them.
Lorenzo Mashadda- is a Senior at CHS who earned a QuestBridge college match scholarship this year to Columbia University in New York City, NY. This is an Ivy League school and is one of the top universities in the US. Lorenzo plans to study Business and Environmental Engineering and is a wonderful representative of the Centennial community.
Olivia Phan - is a Senior at CHS who earned a QuestBridge college match scholarship this year to Stanford University in Stanford, CA. This is a very prestigious school and is one of the top universities in the US. Olivia plans to study BioEngineering and is an outstanding role model for Centennial students to look up to.

Message from CHS Counselors - Black History Month and Forcating
In honor of Black History Month, we’d like to highlight two of the most well-known Black psychologists: Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark and Dr. Kenneth Bancroft Clark. In addition to being the first African-Americans to receive their doctoral degrees in Psychology at Columbia University, they also conducted the pivotal “Doll Study” and provided expert testimony in the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education.

Forecasting! Last Wednesday, students started the process of forecasting classes for next year by working on their four-year plan in an advisory. Next week, we will begin the next part of the forecasting process. Here are the highlights:
- Students will get information and guidance in their advisory classes and have a forecasting fair on Wednesday, Feb. 19th
- 9th -11th-grade students will work with teachers, families, and peers to choose classes and will be taking the next three Wednesday Advisory to forecast (2/19, 2/26, and 3/5). Counselors will not be available for many individual appointments, so make sure you are working with your advisory teachers with questions.
- Students will fill out a forecasting sheet and enter their choices into StudentVUE. This is a crucial step in us building the overall course matrix for the 2025-26 school year. Please make sure your student has entered complete choices into StudentVUE on or before March 5th.
- Students who wish to consult with their counselor about their choices can make appointments in March/April/May, and their choices can be edited.
- Students will have a final chance to review their choices in May. Our goal is to provide students with their 25-26 schedules before summer. At this time, schedules will be considered final, and we will be making very few schedule changes in the fall.
Forecasting for the 2025-2026 School Year in Advisory on Feb. 19, 26 and March 5th. All CHS 9th -11th Grade students have started forecasting and will enter the classes they want for the 2025-2026 school year through their Student Vue accounts in their Advisory by Wednesday, March 5th. The forecasting window will stay open until March 7th, so students can submit the classes they want to take next year through their Student VUE/Parent VUE account. This is something students can also enter/review at home.
Forecasting for the 2025-2026 School Year
Important Dates:
- Forecasting will take place in Advisory on Feb. 19, Feb. 26, and March 5.
- All 9th–11th grade CHS students will enter their course selections for the 2025-2026 school year through their StudentVUE accounts by Wednesday, March 5.
- The forecasting window remains open until March 7, allowing students to submit and review their course choices through StudentVUE/ParentVUE at home.
Key Reminders:
- Every year, some students mistakenly select the wrong courses and do not get assigned to the classes they want or need. Be sure to enter your selections carefully and review them before submitting.
- Refer to the Course Guide for 2025-2026 for graduation requirements and available courses.
- Watch the forecasting video for step-by-step instructions on how to enter your course selections in StudentVUE.

12th Grade NAEP Testing (2/20/25) Notice and Information
Inclement Weather - Be Ready! Reminder
With the colder winter months just around the corner, we want to remind families and staff of the procedures used by our District when inclement weather occurs.
The Centennial School District maintains a preparedness plan for the monitoring of inclement weather and potential weather-related impacts on school operations, including our facilities and road safety for transportation. As these impacts are evaluated, there may be changes to the school schedule, such as a school closure, a delayed start to the school day, or an early dismissal. Snow routes for our school buses will also be used when road conditions are deemed unsafe by our Transportation Department staff.
When inclement weather causes changes such as these, we will notify our staff and families using multiple methods:
- ParentSquare messaging (text, email, app notifications, and/or voicemail). If you need assistance registering for the ParentSquare app, please contact your school office.
- Centennial School District website: www.csd28j.org
- Social Media (Facebook: CentennialSD28j / Instagram: centennial_schools)
- Flash Alert notifies local news stations. Individuals can subscribe to receive FlashAlert updates for Centennial School District here: http://www.flashalert.net/id/centennialsd
Parents/caregivers, if your email address or phone number has changed in the last year, please contact your school office to ensure we have your up-to-date contact information.
