Mr. Ford talks with Noah Luogameno from Teachers in Space, the presenter of the CubeSat Design and Construction workshop in New Mexico. (More information about Teachers in Space is available at TIS.org.) Teachers from around the country learned how to make CubeSat payloads with students and use them to collect atmospheric data. This opportunity was made possible by the Maine Space Grant Consortium, part of NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program.
As part of the workshop, Mr. Ford and teachers from across the country toured some of New Mexico's space-related businesses and organizations, including Spaceport America. (More information is available at spaceportamerica.com.)
Because of our capabilities and experience, Surry was asked to create an enclosure to allow CubeSats to ride a high altitude balloon to the edge of space. Here is the enclosure Mr. Ford designed, using the same Tinkercad software that students utilize during the school year. Inside is the CubeSat frame students assembled last spring. Surry was the only school to bring their own CubeSat frame to the workshop. This year students will add electronics to frames like this as they build the payloads we hope to fly in the spring.
