Student Column: Is All Christian Music Equal?
By: Titus Smothers, CCS Freshman
As people get into their everyday routine and schedule during the second week of school, everyone is getting used to doing devotions and chapel in the mornings.
During these devotions, we always start with a song of praise and end with the Doxology. The same is true of chapel—we'll sing a couple songs before listening to the speaker. So how can we best use this time of singing to fulfill the greatest command of loving God with all of our heart? Let me offer three suggestions.
First off, we need to think about theology. What we need to be singing needs to go hand in hand with the truths of the Word of God. If we sing anything other than that, then what’s the point? We might as well throw out worship through song itself. We have to acknowledge the truth of scripture in everything we do.
Second, dying to yourself is a huge part of worship, even outside of music. I don’t mean literally dying of course, but dying to our sinful desires and focusing solely on the Lord and what he’s done for us. True worship is sacrificial.
Psalm 101:1 says “I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music.” The primary purpose of believers singing through song is to magnify the Lord and sing of his greatness and His many attributes. His love, his kindness, and his mercy for giving us eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ. We sing because of what he’s done for us. Because of our sin, we were separated from God, deserving punishment, but Jesus took that punishment for us. We sing because of that. Our music should be focused on that. The good news of the gospel. We have to look for those songs that catechize our hearts with the truths of the Bible and remind us of God’s characteristics and the story of the Gospel and why we’re worshiping Him in the first place. I personally listen to Keith and Krysten Getty, Shane and Shane, CityAlight, Matt Boswell and Matt Papa, and Sovereign Grace. Some of their songs are “All I Have Is Christ” which explains the Gospel and how we should respond to it, “Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery” which highlights our hope as Christians, and “His Mercy Is More” which praises God for his mercy and what Jesus did for us. In fact, during the first week of September, my Dad and I are going to the Sing! Conference, which will have many of my favorite Christian artists and pastors who preach expositionally. The theme this year is “Sing! The Songs of the Bible” which I think is a great way to picture how we should be worshiping as Christians.
In conclusion, let me encourage you to not view worship through song as a way of taking up space in a service. Rather, see it as an opportunity to meditate on good theology, dying to oneself, and the purpose for worship through song as a whole.

Mrs. Robertson and the upper school students are so excited about the opportunity to visit the public library! With our upper school campus being within walking distance of the library, classes will now be able to visit and check out books.
This group of students, Children's Lit / Book Club class, visited on Thursday.
As a reminder, students must have signed permission forms to participate in this activity. Please be sure to send in your child's permission form if this applies to his/her class.
Outside Play Time
Our outside play time was incredible this week with the cooler weather! Students enjoyed getting outside. Looks like these preschool students even found some extra interesting things to play with outside!
The weather next week looks a little different. We have some hot temperatures ahead!
Hanging Out & Real Conversations
We love seeing our students hang out with each other and engage in real, in-person conversations! In this tech driven world where our youth have become dependent on their phones for interacting with each other, it is refreshing to see them talking and enjoying each other's company.... without their phones!
The students have done an outstanding job turning in and off their phones during the school day. Thank you, parents for supporting the school in this procedure! It has made a world of difference in concentration and student interaction during the school day.
First National Bank Advisory Board
This year we have two seniors that have been invited to participate on the First National Bank Student Advisory Board. One day each month, Evelyn Griffin and Emma Self will be representing CCS at these student leadership meetings. During these meetings they will have the opportunity to learn
more about careers in finance and banking topics, as well as the importance of investing in our communities.
Math and Science Lessons
All the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students love Mrs. Sterling! They are kicking off the year right in math and science areas and doing a great job participating in class activities.
We Love Our CCS Teachers
Watch out, Mrs. Sterling.... looks like you have some competition!
The 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students are working hard in Mrs. Butler's Bible classes too!
More Teacher Love
What's this? More love for our teachers and staff!
Mrs. Swindall works hard each day to assist our youngest lions as they adjust to an environment away from home. You can often find her carrying someone around or getting hugs from students. We are so thankful for her!
Real World Skills
Moms ---- it is okay to cheer for this one!
The students in Mrs. Haynes Life Skills class are learning some real world skills. This week they held discussions and participated in activities on correctly using an extremely valuable household appliance... the washing machine! Students learned more about the importance of following label instructions, sorting colors/fabrics, and making proper adjustments on the machine.
Beach Time.... Or, Reading Time
Students in Mrs. Vermillion's class enjoy read aloud time at the beach! If you have ever visited her room, it's easy to see that sand and sun are a part of the fun.
Volleyball Openers
The Varsity, JV, and Junior High Volleyball teams kicked off the season this week. On Thursday the Varsity and JV teams played at Vinemont where they faced both Columbia and Vinemont. On Saturday the Junior High team played in a tournament at Hanceville.
Congratulations to all of the teams for a great opening week!
*Be on the lookout for some news reporting from our Journalism students! They will be reporting on games and other activities this year!
Mrs. Candase is the Best!
Anyone who has spent time at the lower school knows that Mrs. Candase is the best! This week she received a gift card to The Brandin' Iron to welcome her back for the new year and to show appreciation for all that she does for our school.
Instructional Support Partner
Thank you, Cullman ACT Prep and Allison Robertson for your continued support of our instructional programs and for your recent donation! This teacher computer is very much appreciated and will be an integral part of delivering quality instruction in the classroom.
Student Mentors
Several of our Juniors and Seniors are working this year on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to help teachers and classes at the lower school. This is a great help! They are doing things like making copies, reading to students, organizing materials, and much more.
Thank you, student leaders for your amazing help!
New Bibles for Upper Elementary Classes
ALL students at CCS, Preschool through 12th Grade, study the Bible as a core subject every year? It's amazing how God uses one book to reach our hearts in different ways over and over again.
THANK YOU to one of our supporters for supplying new copies of the Bible to our upper elementary classes! The 6th grade students pictured here are already using and enjoying them!
Adding a Few Touches
Mr. Ory Hampton has been working on a few finishing touches to the windows at both campuses. The Depot Park office window got a new decal this week and our Beech Avenue campus windows will be getting some as well.
Thank you, Mr. Ory!
Mr. Yearwood Speaks to Childhood Home Church
Mr. Yearwood had the opportunity to speak to the congregation at his childhood home church this morning, Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Jones Chapel. He enjoys sharing about God's work in his life and the work that God is doing at Cullman Christian.
We are thankful for our church partners who come along beside us to reach the next generation!
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33
We See You!
WELCOME new CCS Families!
We hope that you are enjoying school so far and we are really excited about having you with us. If you ever have any questions, please be sure to reach out to one of the staff and we will be glad to assist.

A few more items...
Lobster Shirts
CCS has a new gym floor! The floor was previously owned by the Maine Celtics, a feeder team to the Boston Celtics. Their logo, which is still on the floor until refinishing, is a giant green lobster.
Our CCS mascot is still a LION, and the lobster will soon be gone, but we think it's fun to embrace it for just a little while. After all..... the Crimson Tide has an elephant, the Auburn Tigers have an eagle, so why can't the Cullman Christian Lions have a lobster?
Just for fun and to commemorate this event, for a limited time, CCS Lobster T-shirts will be available for $15. Order online at https://www.cullmanchristian.org/spiritwear
CCS Caps
The Archery Team is selling CCS caps for $25. Contact Mrs. Nikki Ayers to order.
