Native American Heritage Month
Yesterday, the Coupeville School Board honored our rich Native American heritage by officially adopting Resolution 2024-14, designating November as Native American Heritage Month.
We were honored to have students from various Native American backgrounds open our meeting with a powerful Land Acknowledgement, recognizing the Indigenous Peoples who have inhabited this land for generations. This was followed by inspiring presentations from our diverse student leadership groups, showcasing the incredible talent and potential of our students.
The meeting ended in the reading and adoption of Resolution 2024-14 by our Native American staff, marking a truly special moment for our school district.
Let's honor Native American Heritage Month together!

CMHS Celebrates and Honors Native American Heritage Month!
In celebration of National Native American Heritage Month, the CMHS Library is honoring the history, traditions, cultures, and contributions of Native American and Alaska Native communities with a special display.
This includes a print by the late Roger Purdue, a local artist renowned for carving the Coupeville Salmon Wheel and his work with the Penn Cove Water Festival. Students are invited to explore and check out books by Native authors such as Matika Wilbur (Swinomish), Christine Day (Upper Skagit), Brian Young (Navajo), and Michael Hutchinson (Misipawistik Cree). Additionally, they can piece together the “Together Forever” puzzle by Jim Oskineegish (Ojibwe) or enjoy coloring formline designs created by various Indigenous artists at our activity station.
For those interested in learning more, we’ve also shared additional resources in grade-level Google Classrooms, including the interactive map “The Tribes of Washington,” Lushootseed greetings, and more. Photo credit: Sophia Batterman (CMS Yearbook).
CMHS Library Author Visit
On Tuesday, November 12th, the CMHS Library had the pleasure of hosting Eldritch Black, author of the Weirdby Island series, for a reading from The Pirates of Penn Cove. Following the reading, CMS students Annaliese Powers and Marina Jadwin led a Q&A session with the author, and he signed books for attendees. Photo credit: Cori Formhals (CMS Yearbook).

Coupeville Sports Playoff Time!
Huge congratulations to our Cross Country Team who participated in the state tournament in Pasco this past weekend. We are very proud of this team and their efforts! Go Wolves!
Transportation: Attention Please
At Coupeville School District, the safety of our students is essential. To enhance safety and improve the efficiency of student drop-offs and pick-ups, we are implementing a new procedure for the middle school loop.
Effective immediately, all family vehicles, regardless of whether you have a middle school or high school student, should use the high school loop and parking lot for drop-off and pick-up.
We have observed an increase in safety risks in the middle school loop due to congestion, limited visibility, and student movement around vehicles. By dedicating the middle school loop to buses and transit vehicles only, we can significantly reduce these risks and improve overall safety.
We understand that this change may require some adjustment. However, we believe it is essential to prioritize the safety of our students. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we implement this new procedure.
Thank you for your support.
Important Reminder from Transportation
Designated Individuals for Student Pickup at Bus Stops
As a reminder, district policy requires that students in 1st grade or lower must be met by a designated individual at the bus stop in order to be released from the bus.
To ensure the drivers can provide a safe and smooth transition, designated individuals must meet the student directly at the bus door upon arrival. If you need to arrange an alternative plan, please submit a written request to the Transportation Department for approval.
Key Reminders:
- Timeliness: Designated individuals should arrive at the bus stop 5–10 minutes before the scheduled arrival time.
- Student Release: Students will only be released to the designated individual who is present at the bus door.
- In Case of Absence: If a designated individual is not present, transportation staff will follow district protocols to ensure student safety.
