A Note to our Parents
A note on IAR testing for parents/guardians of 3rd through 8th grade student,
Students in third through eighth grade will participate in standardized test sessions between April 3rd and the 12th. Specific information has been / will be shared related to dates and times for your child(ren)'s homeroom and/or grade.
In District 91, we remain committed to educating the whole child; this includes the academic, physical, and emotional realms. Our staff understands that there is no single test that can accurately measure the true potential of your child; however, we do count on the IAR assessment data to determine if our curriculum is aligned with other educational institutions. It is our job to do everything in our power to prepare our learners and ensure that they are competitive with their peers - in Lockport, through Illinois, and across the country. We analyze the IAR data along with classroom performance, MAP benchmarking data, and progress monitoring data to determine the effectiveness of our instruction. We also revise our curriculum and plan intervention services based on the information we collect.
We and the teachers are asking for your partnership in making sure your child is at school AND that they are ready for this extra responsibility.
How can you help?
Many parents want to know what they can do to make this experience successful for their child. First and foremost, please let your child know that you are proud of him or her and that you are confident that he or she will do their best!!! Other helpful tips include:
Make sure that your child gets a good night's sleep every night, but especially before each testing date.
Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast before going to school.
Try to schedule all doctor appointments, etc. outside of the testing week. If your child is ill or otherwise can’t attend school due to an emergency or tardiness on one or more of the assessment dates, he or she will be given a make-up testing date.
Try to ensure that your child comes to school each day of testing with a positive attitude.

Registration for the 24-25 School Year is now open!
Kindergarten Roundup (March 18-April 18):
Lockport School District 91's Milne Grove School will offer a digital Kindergarten Round-up for the 2024-2025 school year from March 18 - April 18, 2024. During this window, families can access our registration webpage and complete the student registration electronically. Caregivers that would like assistance can make an appointment with our registrar, Mrs. Dragosh, by emailing cdragosh@d91.net or calling 815-838-0737x1104. On April 18, the district will offer an in-person opportunity to finalize registrations; families can walk in at Milne Grove Door G between 3:30-6pm to use a device, drop off documents, and check out our building. Students that are fully registered by April 18th will be eligible to attend a kindergarten preview session in May.

In order to be complete, registrations must include a completed electronic registration, the child's birth certificate, guardian's driver's license, and notarized custody form. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. Health documents are required prior to the start of school in August. For program information, please contact the school principal, Mrs. Koziol at jkoziol@d91.net. Returning and New Student Early Bird Registration (March 18 - May 30):
Returning student registration will open March 18th and extend through May 30th. Families that complete their registration and pay in full or make the first payment of an installment plan by May 30th at 6pm will enjoy the early bird registration rate. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool again this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. On May 30th, the district will offer an in-person opportunity to finalize registrations; families can walk in at KG door 4 between 3:30-6pm to use a device, drop off documents, etc.
Returning & New Student Regular Registration (May 31 - July 18):
On May 31st, the regular registration window begins and the early bird registration rate will no longer be available. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool again this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. Families that need in person service and registration assistance are invited to attend one of the two drop in dates at Kelvin Grove Door 4, June 13th from 3 - 6pm & July 18th between 8am-10am or 4pm-6pm. The registrar will be on hand to answer questions about residency documents and receive forms. Devices will also be available for those who do not have access to technology. Families may also request a 1:1 registration appointment by emailing cdragosh@d91.net. Having accurate registration numbers as early as possible is essential to assigning classroom placements and finalizing staffing assignments; your cooperation in registering in a timely manner is appreciated.
Late Registration (July 19 & beyond):
Late registration begins on July 19th. Students registering during this timeframe may not receive their schedule/class assignment on time.

April is a great month for health topics! I am not sure I could pick one specifically, so I will leave a little of each for you to learn about. Be sure to click the links provided to gain more knowledge regarding the highlighted newsletter topics.
April 7th is World Health Day! The theme for 2024 is ‘My health, my right’! According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this year's theme was chosen to bring awareness that everyone, everywhere should have access to quality healthcare, services, education, a clean, less polluted environment and freedom from discrimination. World Health Day is celebrated annually, drawing attention to specific topics, and is celebrated on the day that the World Health Organization (WHO) was founded in 1948. The WHO leads global efforts to promote healthier lives during all life stages.
Sepsis is the next topic and it is one I want everyone to know about. Most people think, “it won’t happen to me or my family.". Due to my healthcare background, I also thought that way, until June 2022 when my daughter was in septic shock due to an asymptomatic infection. Sepsis is the leading cause of death in young children and babies worldwide. Pediatric Sepsis Week is April 21 - 27. Sepsis is a life-threatening response to an infection that can lead to severe health complications that involve other organs or possible death. Sepsis can be caused by any type of infection: viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic. Symptoms of sepsis are listed here and can vary slightly in children under 5 years old. TIME is a mnemonic to recall specific symptoms - Time, Infection, Mental decline, Extremely ill.
April is Stress Awareness Month; it has been recognized every April since 1992. Stress is a reaction to a situation where we feel anxious or threatened. In order to live a happy, healthy life, we need to develop healthy coping skills. Stress is a natural reaction to wanted and unwanted changes in our environment resulting in physical, emotional, and intellectual responses. Long-term stress can result in physical symptoms, such as headaches and stomach issues, and it can lead to heart disease or a stroke. When placed into stressful situations, our bodies release specific stress hormones causing an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose levels.

Expectations and Goal Setting
Spring can be an exciting time as the weather warms up and the birds are chirping. It can also feel like the hardest time of year to get our kids to finish their homework. This is a great time to think about the expectations you have for your child. At what age do parents stop helping with homework? What level of responsibility is appropriate for my child?
In addition to expecting homework to be completed, consider giving your child some chores or responsibilities. Children have an innate desire to learn, grow, and move ahead. Setting expectations builds confidence, self esteem, and independence. Let them get involved with household responsibilities, community service projects, or let them help make dinner one night. If we don’t let our children do what is appropriate for their age, we are denying them the gift of independence.
Support your child in setting new goals. Working toward a goal takes a lot of hard work! When you overcome challenges, you're literally building skills you need to overcome bigger challenges in the future. Help your child choose an achievable goal. Some goals might be:
Get out the door on time in the morning
Get a great grade on a unit test
Practice instrument 30 minutes each day
Read 100 pages over spring break
Use class time wisely
Write my assignments in my planner every day
Get a base hit in every game
Save for a smart watch
Then you can help your child set up a plan. Together make a list of the steps to achieve the goal. Then have your child consider, “Who can help you achieve this goal?” and “How will you know you met your goal?” Kids understand metrics. After all, test scores and grades are metrics. Help them identify some measurements that they can use to see how well they are achieving their goals.
Last, track your child’s growth by completing a daily habit color-in chart. Or make a progress chart similar to a fundraising thermometer. Having this visual reminder will likely encourage more success. This chart could count the number of base hits in each game for your baseball player. For a child saving money for a big purchase, the child can make a chart that shows their savings progress. Having regular measures can help the child stay on track with their goals.
Having a few bad days doesn’t mean your goal isn’t achievable. Ask your student, “What will you do when you have a bad day?” Remind your child of past struggles and accomplishments.
When a goal is achieved, make a big deal about it. Go spend some quality time with your child. Celebrating a child’s accomplishments can help them feel that they have done something worthwhile.
