Warrior Families,
Our students in grades 1-9 witnessed history on Tuesday, October 15 at the Fence Lake boat landing! The first dugout canoe was launched on the reservation in over 500 years! Chi miigwech to Mr. Wayne Valliere and our Cultural Connections staff for this amazing experience. Over 90% of our student and staff population helped with building the dugout canoe over the past 2 years. Incredible! The dugout canoe will be proudly displayed in our school welcome center soon. Stay tuned!
We welcome you to join us for our first parent teacher conferences of the 2024-2025 school year on Monday, November 11 from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm. A delicious meal will be served in our cafeteria. Monday, November 11 is also our Veteran's Day Assembly in the big gym starting at 10:00 pm. The community is welcome to attend. Students have an early release on this day to help accommodate parent teacher conferences. Buses pull from school at 12:30 pm
As always every day counts here on the Warrior Campus. Please help ensure your child develops the habit of regular attendance. Studies show many children who miss too many days in 4K, kindergarten and first grade struggle academically in later years. They often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade. Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up. It doesn't matter if absences are excused or unexcused. They all represent lost time in the classroom and lost opportunity to learn.
Please don't hesitate to contact the school with any questions. Every day is a great day to be a Warrior!
Respectfully,
Principal Fieck

On Tuesday, Oct. 15th 2024 over 500 LDF students, staff, volunteers, community leaders, media & apprentices witnessed a historic happening in Lac du Flambeau.
Just like the team of men navigating the ride on the lakes, the dugout canoe has a name too ...Mikinaak (Snapping Turtle) and the Ojibwe words Mitigo Jiimaan mean (wood canoe.) The dugout canoe was made from a single white pine tree that was over 350 years old and found at Trout River. It has been 500 years since a dugout canoe has been made by the native people. Wayne Valliere, master canoe builder, had lots of help along the way, from students, families, and community members. Wayne had a vision too that the wood from the canoe should touch all of the lakes on its maiden voyage, Fence Lake, Crawling Stone, Interlaken, Flambeau and Lake Pokegama.
Side Note: In its creation-tools were used from hundreds of years ago into more present day tools. And...Mikinaak Mitigo Jiimaan weighed in at a whopping 750#'s.
IT'S ALWAYS A GREAT DAY TO BE A WARRIOR!

November Artist of the Month
Sharon-Lee Bauman
Katie Black, LDF Art Teacher has her Artist of the month selected:
The Artist of the Month for November is Sharon-Lee Bauman. Sharon is a 7th grader at LDF. She was picked because she is creative, skilled and an independent worker. Sharon is holding her neurographic artwork in the photo.
November Chef of the Month
Kain LaBarge
Ms. Lisa Hernandez, LDF Music, & Life Skills Teacher chose 7th grade student Kain LaBarge as the November Chef of the Month. Ms. Hernandez selected Kain because he is by far one of the happiest and most obliging young men that she has had the honor to have in her class. Ms. Hernandez couldn't speak highly enough about him. She said that he is always ready to help...asking her, what do you need? What can I help you with? He is a true pleasure to have in class. Ms. Hernandez did want to give him a special shout out too regarding the Family Night Event held recently. He never complained once during the two hour special occasion and continued serving up the turkey and gravy to the LDF families attending, and of course, with his contagious smile!
Musicians of the Month
Mrs. Kendra Richter (LDF Music Teacher) presented a new event happening in her classroom: The Musician of the Month! Two Musicians of the Month were chosen. They were Javier Reyes and Rueben LaBarge.
Javier was chosen for his leadership in helping his class achieve a 3-part round. Javier not only used a gentle singing voice, but led his group in the melody to achieve this difficult level of singing in 3rd grade.

Helping Your Child Receive the Full Benefit of Their Education-Facts from the Attendance Office
An absence is any time your child misses any portion of the school day after the start of school (8:10 AM) and before the scheduled end of school (3:25 PM).
Absences are further broken down as excused and unexcused.
All excused absences require communication with school. Any absence lacking communication remains unexcused until such time as information is provided to the school. For an absence to be excused, we need communication from you (email, phone call, written note). It is never too late to communicate for a past absence. Remember, good attendance is more than simply complying with laws; rather, it is truly a matter of providing our children with more and better opportunities to learn!

7 Grandfather Teachings (NO POWWOW IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER)
The traditional concepts of respect and sharing that form the foundation of the Native American way of life are built around the seven natural laws, or sacred teachings. Each teaching honors one of the basic virtues intrinsic to a full and healthy life.
Each law is embodied by an animal to underscore the point that all actions and decisions made by man are manifest on a physical plain. The animal world taught man how to live close to the earth, and the connection that has been established between the animal world and that of man has instilled a respect for all life in those who follow the traditional way.
- The Eagle teaches us LOVE. Love must be unconditional.
- The Buffalo teaches us RESPECT. Respect is the condition of being honored.
- The Bear teaches us COURAGE. Courage is the ability to face danger, fear, or changes with confidence and bravery.
- The Butterfly teaches us HONESTY.
- The Beaver teaches us WISDOM. Wisdom is the ability to make decisions based on personal knowledge and experience.
- The Wolf teaches us HUMILITY. Humility is being humble and not arrogant.
- The Turtle teaches us TRUTH. Truth is to know and understand all the seven teachings have given to us by the Creator and to remain faithful to them.
