McGlynn Middle School
Principal Tucci's October Newsletter
Dear McGlynn Middle School Community,
Last week, we completed our first round of NWEA MAP testing for Math, Reading and Science. MAP uses RIT scale to accurately measure what students know, regardless of their grade level. It also measures growth over time, allowing you to trace your child’s progress throughout the school year and across multiple years. This data allows teachers to accurately measure each student’s academic growth throughout the school year and over time and identify areas where students may need additional support. As parents, you can use your child’s RIT score to help them meet their goals. I will be sharing the results of this first round of MAP testing in the coming weeks. The second round (out of three total in the school year) of assessments will take place in December. We appreciate and value you as a partner in your child's educational journey! Please do not hesitate to ever reach out to me if you would like to set up a meeting with your child's team of teachers.

Canoemobile visits the McGlynn Middle School!
In September, 6th graders participated in Wilderness Inquiry's Canoemobile “floating classroom” that brought students out on the Mystic River in 24-foot Voyageur 10-person canoes to learn about science, history, geography, and culture. The centerpiece of the Canoemobile program was the integrated classroom and outdoor education experience that utilized under-appreciated urban resources, especially urban waterways. Canoemobile programming and educational activities operate in collaboration with local, state, and federal partners. Thank you to the Mystic River Watershed Association, NOAA, EPA, City of Medford and Wilderness Inquiry for bringing Canoemobile to our 6th graders! The students enjoyed both the land and water stations.
Congratulations to our 8th Grade High 5 Recipients
The following students were recognized as individuals who embodied actions and characteristics that are consistent with the Mustang Way. They have modeled characteristics such as kindness, hard work, academic excellence, and leadership. This month's recipients are 8th graders:
Leo Intoppa
Connor Merry
Rowan O'Leary
Naimah Pierre-Louis
Mohammed Chowdhury
Club and Activities Fair in September
The McGlynn Middle School Club and Activities Fair was held on Wednesday, September 25th during our WIN block (period 3). This was a time for each of the grades to cycle through the gymnasium to learn about and sign up for the clubs and activities that they might be interested in pursuing this school year. The Andrews Middle School also held their Club and Activities Fair on the same date.
Attendance Matters!
Dear McGlynn Middle School Community,
We continue to work hard to strengthen the quality and breadth of our instructional programming each and every day at our school. We realize the importance of our collective work to prepare our students to graduate and be ready to meet the challenges ahead in their postsecondary future. However, in order to fully benefit from the learning and growth in school, students must be engaged and present every day.
Please make every effort to ensure that your child is present in school every day. We have vacation weeks throughout the school year, which are strategically placed. Instruction moves on each and every day and it is crucial that your children are present every day to engage in learning with their peers. When students are absent, especially for multiple days, they are missing learning experiences that are unable to be made up. Please help us reinforce the importance of regular attendance, set routines, and provide the necessary encouragement. If your child exhibits challenges in attending school regularly, please do not hesitate to reach out to us so that we can partner. These conversations often provide us with valuable insights into your child's individual needs and challenges, allowing for more tailored support. Our school community is only complete when every child is present.
In order to communicate proactively with families regarding attendance, we will be sending letters home if your student(s) have been absent from school 5 or more days (regardless of whether their absences were excused or not). If absences continue to be of concern, we will set up family meetings.
Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers, counselors or myself if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support of our collective work!
Sincerely,
Principal Tucci

Former NBA Player & Captain of the Harlem Globetrotters Visits the McGlynn Middle School
McGlynn Middle School students enjoyed a special assembly with Melvin Adams, former NBA player and captain of the Harlem Globetrotters on September 27th. Melvin shared his underdog story and asked his audiences, “Imagine what you can do?” He encouraged and entertained students and demonstrated how they can achieve their dreams no matter the circumstances they face.

PTO Sponsored Scholastic Book Fair 9/30-10/7
Dear Families,
The McGlynn Middle School PTO is having a Fall Book Fair with Scholastic Books Monday, September 30th, through Monday, October 7th, 2024 in the McGlynn School Library. Students will all get a chance to visit the book fair with their ELA classes during the week. If you want to know which day they will visit, please email their ELA teacher to ask. If they forget their money, they can also return to the fair for a second visit (with teacher permission) anytime before Monday, October 7, at 2pm.
The book fair will also be open for After School Hours on Wednesday, October 2nd, until 3:00 PM.
Payment Information:
Cash, checks (made out to McGlynn Middle School PTO), and credit/debit cards are accepted. A digital payment option is also available through eWallet. eWallet funds never expire and can be used to shop online with Scholastic or to fund an eWallet for a future Book Fair.
You can set up your eWallet here: https://account.scholastic.com/my-scholastic/profile/create-ewallet.html?fairID=5629069&sUCN=628695880
Teacher & Library Wish List Fund:
This is a link to an e-Wallet that the PTO has set up to collect funds that we will use to purchase wish list books for the middle school library and teachers’ classrooms: https://shop.scholastic.com/ewallet/fund?lang=en_US&walletId=23ac4dac-1468-46f5-8ccf-56ab6caf1e92
(I know it says "7th Grade", but that is just because you need to choose one grade when creating the eWallet. These funds will go towards purchasing books for teachers grades 6-8 and middle school library.)
Share the Fair:
If you would like to send in extra money for Share the Fair, this will also go into a fund to help purchase books for the library and teacher wish lists. We also use these funds to help if a student is a bit short. We’ll have a collection container for donations set up by the registers. You can tell your child to put the money (or their change) into the bin if you’d like to contribute. They can also round up to the next dollar to Share the Fair. Thank you!

MMS Students honored at the New England Revolution Game in September
As a result of our exciting new partnership with Greater Boston City Year, 11 McGlynn Middle School students were selected to be a member of the Arbella Dream Team for the New England Revolution match at Gillette Stadium last month. They had the chance to walk out onto the "pitch" with the starting line up, stand beside the Revs players for the National Anthem, and were given great seats to enjoy the match!
