ALICE WEEK
Dear Windom Families,
The week of October 21 is School Safety Week and Windom Students will be learning about what to do if there is a “wolf” or intruder in the building. Although none of us want to think about this possibility, we must have a plan and be prepared. All teachers have completed A.L.I.C.E. Training and are equipped to make decisions that will keep students as safe as possible during this type of event. A.L.I.C.E. gives teachers options that begin with knowing where the intruder is located. To communicate this, the intercom and an app are used among our staff. Once teachers know the location of the intruder, they have options to lockdown their classroom and barricade the door (they would exit out the window in the real event), exit through a door and run to the rally point, distract and confuse the intruder, or even take the class into the neighborhood for safety.
A.L.I.C.E. stands for:
Alert - Get the word out! Armed Intruder in building. Use clear, concise language to convey the type and location of the event. The school intercom and CrisisGo App are used to communicate.
Lockdown - This is a good starting point. Lockdown in a secure area.
Inform -Communication keeps the intruder off balance and allows for good
decision-making. Continuous communication with teachers occurs so that they can get students out as soon as possible. All staff are responsible for communicating the whereabouts of the intruder.
Counter - Apply skills to distract, confuse, and buy time so adults can gain control.
Evacuate - As soon as it is safe to do so, evacuate.
There will be many scenarios that we will practice with students during Safety Week using a story book for the younger students and discussion points for the older students. Teachers and students together will locate all exits in the building including the doors not used very often such as the maintenance room or the kitchen exits. They will practice running to the rally point to meet their teacher. Classes will practice building a barricade at the door and talk about going out the window in a real event. Most importantly, students will learn that it is critical to follow the teacher’s directions in an emergency.
A new statute allows parents to opt their child(ren) out of A.L.I.C.E drills. If you prefer not to have your child participate in the drills, please complete this form and electronically submit.
If you have questions or would like more information about the use of A.L.I.C.E. in Windom Area Schools, please call me at 507-831-6901 or email: jfrank@isd177.com.
Sincerely,
Jamie Frank
Superintendent
Veteran's Day Program
All are invited to the Veteran's Day Program on November 11 at 9:30 in the Blue Gym. This program will be hosted by Windom Schools in conjunction with the Windom American Legion Post 206. Students will participate in the program by singing, playing instruments, and the doing a flag presentation. Please join us in honoring Veteran's who are responsible for the making America the land of the free and home of the brave!
Informational Meeting
Please join the Mammoth Architectural Team and the Windom School Board for an informational session in the Lecture Hall at the Middle High School at 5:30pm on October 22 to learn about the journey that Windom Area Schools has taken to identify facility needs as well as solutions. There will be a community survey arriving in every resident mailbox in mid-November for the public to give us their thoughts and feedback. We look forward to seeing you on October 22!
Baker's Square Pies Fundraiser
5th - 8th graders will be selling Bakers Square Pies from October 16 - 24. Students will have order forms. Community Members may also call the school to order pies if a student doesn't approach them.
Pie pick up will be November 26 in the The Nest Foyer from 3 - 7 PM, just in time for Thanksgiving!
This is a fundraiser for Middle School Advisory.
Inclement Weather
Winter will be here before we know it! If inclement weather makes it unsafe for students and staff to travel to school, parents will receive a message using an app called Thrillshare. Thrillshare speaks with Infinite Campus to gain phone numbers and email addresses. Please take this opportunity to log into your family Infinite Campus and double check your contact information.
Weather announcements are also broadcasted on KDOM radio, KEYC TV, WCCO TV, KELO TV, KARE 11TV, KKOJ Radio, and recorded in the school's phone system at school 831-6910. We also share the information on the Windom Schools Facebook page and Twitter Handle.
There are three types of days that may be called due to inclement weather:
1. An E-Learning Day
2. A Good Old Fashion Snow Day
3. Virtual Professional Development Day for Staff
- E-Learning
An E-Learning Day will be announced as early as possible, but by statute must be determined no later than two hours before the start of the school day. Preschool, Elementary, and Middle School students will have work in their take-home folders to complete and High School Students will log into Infinite Campus for their classes. All teachers will be available by phone and email on E-Learning Days.
To view the official E-Learning Plan click here.
- Good Old Fashion Snowday
A good old fashion snow day means that there is no school for students or staff.
- Virtual Professional Development
A virtual professional development day means that students will have the day off and staff will participate in virtual professional development.
