Guyer Theatre Presents the Musical, "Sister Act", November 1-3, 8-10

Sister Act is a hilarious musical based on the movie of the same name, which starred Whoopi Goldberg. The musical begins when Deloris van Cartier, a lounge singer hoping to make it big, accidentally witnesses a murder, committed by her married boyfriend Curtis. When she runs to the police for protection, she discovers “Sweaty” Eddie, a nerd from her high school days who used to have a giant crush on her. In order to hide Deloris, Eddie puts her in the most unlikely place for her to be found - a convent. But of course, Deloris can’t stay hidden long! After she takes over the convent choir, the nuns learn how to rock and roll, and the church will never be the same again! With nuns who sing, dance, rap, and generally boogie down, this show is full of laughs, but it is also a touching story of redemption and acceptance.

Successful Contest Season for DISD High School Marching Bands Despite Record Rainfalls

The 2018 marching band contest season was one of the wettest, rainiest seasons on record but it was very successful for all four of Denton ISD's high schools. Braswell, Denton, Guyer, and Ryan HS all earned 1st Division "Superior" ratings at the UIL Region 2 Marching Band Contest on October 20. Being a 6A advancement year, Guyer HS was the only DISD band to advance to UIL Area C competition. Guyer performed its contest show, Starburst, extremely well at Area among 25 of the best bands in Texas but was not one of the top 5 that advanced to State. Guyer was also successful in its Pre-UIL contests, placing in the finals at their two Pre-UIL contests: 7th in the Golden Triangle Classic and 6th at USBands Showcase at Collins Stadium.

The Braswell HS Band, in just its third year, had its most successful season yet with its 2018 show, Lotus. At the Little Elm Classic on the Lake, the B-Well Band won Best in Class and placed 7th overall. They finished the season at the USBands Saginaw contest, winning class awards for Best Effect and Best Visual in prelims and winning 5th place in the finals.

The DHS Pride of Bronco Country competed in the Princeton Sounds of Fall, bringing home the prelims awards for Class Runner-Up and Best in Class Percussion. They finished that contest placing 8th overall in the finals. Denton High finished its season at the USBands Saginaw contest, advancing to finals and placing 9th overall.

Congratulations to all of the students and staff in our high school marching bands for their outstanding shows this season and all of the honors they achieved! Many thanks to the hard working parents who support our bands each year!

58 DISD Students Selected for TMEA All-Region Choirs

Choral students from all over TMEA Region 2, including Denton, Lake Dallas, Lewisville, and Northwest ISDs, auditioned for the HS and MS All-Region Choirs. In all, 58 Denton ISD choral students will represent every DISD secondary campus in the All-Region Choirs: 23 HS students and 35 MS students. The MS All-Region Choir Concert will be Saturday, November 3 at Braswell HS. The HS All-Region Choir Concert will be Saturday, November 10 at Denton HS. These concerts are open to the public. Come out and hear amazing music as performed by the very best vocalists in Region 2!

Braswell Theatre Produces Its Largest Fall Show, "The Trojan Women"

The Braswell Theatre Department opened their third season with the classic Greek tragedy, ”The Trojan Women, ” by Euripides with an modern translation by Nicholas Rudall on October 18-20. This production featured the Braswell Bravo Company’s largest fall show cast and crew in department history, with 62 members in the cast and crew.

“We are really excited to bring classical dramatic literature to our students with a modern twist,” theater director Michelle Greene said, “Our students worked on this production since early September and have grown leaps in bounds both on stage and off.”

Thespian Vice-President and senior Dani Wilson said, “It's amazing to look back and see just
how far we’ve come in three short years. We’ve made so much progress as a department in such a small amount of time, and you’ll be able to see that progress as soon as the lights dim and the curtain opens.”

Stage Manager Mackenzie Milhizer couldn't be more proud of her cast and crew, “The Trojan Women is a truly unique and empowering show. These actors are undoubtedly committed and put in every effort they can to tell this story.”

40 DISD HS Students Selected to TMEA All-Region Orchestra

On Saturday, October 20, Denton ISD high school orchestra students participated in the TMEA All-Region Orchestra Auditions, competing against the top students from around Region 2, which includes Denton, Lewisville, and Northwest ISDs. 40 students from Denton ISDs high school orchestra programs were selected for the All-Region Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra. These students will perform in the TMEA All-Region Orchestra Concert on Saturday, December 8 at Eaton HS, 1350 Eagle Blvd, Haslet, TX 76052. Congratulations to these students and their teachers!

Denton HS Fillies Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary

2018-19 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Denton HS Fillies Drill Team. Fillies Director, Kerri Burgess, organized a halftime performance at the Denton HS vs. Ryan HS football game on September 28 that included over 250 Fillies alumni members. It was an incredible experience for the current Fillies, the alumni, and all of the local fans in attendance to visualize the number of students that have been positively impacted by the Fillies organization over 50 years. Chris Vochoska, Audio Video Producer at the Advanced Technology Complex, produced a video celebrating the 50th anniversary that includes historical photos and interviews with Fillies alumni. Be sure to catch the Fillies perform at all Denton HS varsity football games this season and congratulate them on their 50th anniversary!

Fine Arts Faculty Professional Development and Professional Learning Community

All Denton ISD faculty from all Fine Arts areas: art, band, choir, dance, elementary music, orchestra, and theatre took part in professional development on October 12 and a professional learning community on October 15. Oct 12 saw the return of leaders in each fine arts field, guiding our teachers in the development of culture, curriculum, and pedagogy in their content areas. Oct 15 brought valuable collaboration and development of learning targets within content area PLCs. Many thanks to Braswell HS for hosting this for our Fine Arts Department!
