The Academy of Science and Technology students, a STEM magnet program at College Park is hosting an exciting initiative for elementary students.
Our program has introduced elementary students to Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese in past semesters, guided by bilingual high school volunteers. Now, we plan to expand this free, extracurricular language initiative to Conroe ISD’s elementary schools for the winter/spring semester of 2025. Targeting grades 2-6, the program uses engaging bilingual books to make language learning enjoyable and foster mentoring relationships between elementary students and high school volunteers.
Held on Zoom, sessions are brief—just 15 minutes weekly on Tuesdays at 5 PM—making it accessible for young learners without disrupting their schedules. Each week, students will explore a different language, immersing them in diverse linguistic contexts during an optimal time for language acquisition. By the program's end, they will be able to introduce themselves and understand basic phrases, setting a foundation for future language learning.
