The Manning Weekly Newsletter
May 15, 2020
Dear Families,
I imagine many of you have read about or seen Jeffco's conversations about what school might look like in the fall. Earlier this week, district leaders shared their preliminary thoughts with the Board of Education about returning to school buildings in August. There was discussion among board members and leadership about some aspects of a "plan" that include a hybrid model of learning, in which students would have some access to school buildings and would continue to do some of their learning remotely. Parts of this conversation were captured and shared by the news media.
Please understand the plan in these discussions is very much in skeletal, draft form, and the assumptions grounding district leaders' thinking are the current public health advisories at this time, which of course, like many other things, may change significantly over the summer.
Jeffco believes in-person learning and interactions are a vital part of student academic and social-emotional well-being. That belief, in alignment with Jeffco Public Health guidelines, is central to our conversations about how best to do school in these difficult circumstances. While in-person learning presents challenges, the district's draft plan attempts to maximize opportunities for students while continuing to prioritize the health of students, educators, and our community.
Next Friday, May 22, Jeffco Public Schools will send all of you a first draft of a plan to reopen schools in the fall with a hybrid model of in person and remote learning. This email will include links for you to provide feedback. I implore you to engage in that process-- to ask questions, to raise concerns, to celebrate sound ideas and to propose your creative solutions. District leaders will use your feedback to solidify a finalized restart plan that will be shared with schools and the community in July.
The Manning Leadership Team has been engaged in preliminary conversations about what a hybrid model might look like at our school; however, none of those plans can be solidified until we know the guidance that will come from our state, our county and our school district. There are several variables that remain unknown that make it impossible for us to finalize and share a detailed plan with you. We will make it a priority to engage you and communicate with you when we can, and we promise that we will keep the best interests of students at the heart of our decisions.
District Leadership's understanding right now:
- It is safe to assume that the structure of how our schools operate in August will be different than what we had in place prior to COVID-19, and also different than the remote learning system we have in place now.
- There are two educational models that Jeffco MAY implement in the Fall of 2020: Hybrid (a combination of remote learning and in-person learning) or Remote Learning.
- At this time, we believe that Remote Learning will continue to be an option for all students.
- The first day of school will still be Tuesday, August 18th.
- We are currently gathering feedback from Leadership and Administration. Throughout the next week, we will gather feedback from all employees.
- On May 22, a model will be released to the community, at which time all families will have the opportunity to give feedback.
- There will be a final Restart Plan released in July. However, as public health guidelines change, adjustments may continue to be made up until the start of school.
I know that this provides little clarity, and I am sorry that the circumstances demand for all of us to remain in a state of uncertainty. I appreciate your thoughtfulness, your support and your engagement moving forward.
If you have any questions, I will do everything I can to answer them. I will likely not be able to answer most, but I will give you the best information I have.
Thanks, as always, for sharing your kids with us; it is our honor to serve them.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT-- Yearbook delivery delayed!
During their scheduled day and time (Schedule pictured below):
Students who rented instruments from Manning or have books from our library should return them. Students may get essential personal items out of lockers. Any student who is attending a school outside of Jeffco Public Schools in the 2020-2021 school year should return their Chromebooks and chargers. All current 6th graders, 7th graders and 8th graders who are continuing on to a Jeffco high school should keep their Chromebook over the summer. Things to consider: Please review the map for traffic flow. You may arrive any time during your window; staggering your arrival will help alleviate congestion. If you have students in multiple grades, have one of them collect items from all lockers in the family. That way, you won’t need to come to the school multiple times. Please put any items you are dropping off in your trunk and open it for us to collect them. That way, we can minimize contact and maintain 6 feet of distance. If you’re returning a Chromebook, please make sure it’s clean and the charger cord is wrapped up. All students will be required to wear a mask at all times in the building. Please attach a piece of paper with your student’s name to both the Chrombook and the charger. Only 10 students at a time may enter the building; no other family members will be permitted. We can’t allow congregating in or out of the building. Families-- please stay in your vehicles, and remind students to stay 6 feet apart. Remember that we have Open House/Registrations days scheduled on Aug 12, 10:30am-2:30pm or Aug 13, 2-6:30pm. If your students are returning to Manning and can wait until August to get things from their lockers, please have them wait. If your scheduled time doesn’t work for you, please reach out to Jeena at Jeena.Templeton@jeffco.k12.co.us to schedule another time.

You also have the ability to pause all internet activity on the device. Learn more about this option and how to use it on our SecurlyHome App webpage.

Greetings fabulous Manning 8th grade parents and guardians,
How are you? We hope you are doing well and finding some level of peace amidst our current pandemic.
We are so excited to be able to celebrate with you on August 6th from 10-12 p.m. at MAPLE GROVE PARK ON 32nd - just west of Manning.
The PTA will be providing pizza and you can sign-up for a couple things at the link below. (We will order a couple gluten free pizzas). This is a casual event. Students are invited to bring yard games, frisbees, sports balls, etc. Please no skateboards.
We will be staying outside as much as possible.
Parents and guardians can just drop off their student. However, a few parents are needed to help supervise, so you are welcome to stay. We will also need support cleaning up at the close of the celebration.
Best to you and yours as we all finish this unusual semester strong. We look forward to being back together again later in the summer!

Meet Our New Band Teacher! We are very pleased to announce that we have hired Mrs. Hope Hosier as our band director for next year! Mrs. Hosier is a wonderful music teacher from Wayne Carle Middle School who Mrs. Mendez and Mr. Miller have known for many years. If you have any questions for Mrs. Hosier, you can email her at hhosier@jeffcoschools.us. We're extremely lucky to have her come teach band and theater at Manning next year!
A letter from Mrs. Hosier:
Hello Parents and Guardians of the 2020-2021 Manning Band students!
My name is Hope Hosier and I am honored to be the new band director at Manning for the 20-21 school year. It is with great excitement that I look forward to the upcoming year and meeting your kids.
A little bit about me - This upcoming year will be my 25th year teaching in Jeffco. I have taught all of the performing arts (band, orchestra, choir and theatre) at Mandalay Middle School then most recently Wayne Carle Middle School which I opened in 2006. Like most students I started playing the flute in elementary school and band has been my passion ever since! I look forward to working with Ms. Shawna Mendez and Mr. Derek Miller as part of the incredible performing arts department at Manning. I have been happily married for 21 years and have two cats.
The purpose of this email is to meet you and hopefully open a line of communication with you. If you have any questions about band, please do not hesitate to email me. The most important part of teaching has been the student and family connections that I am honored to have fostered throughout my career. If you would like to tell me a bit about your child, please feel free! I'd love to learn about them!
I have created the following flipgrid video group to introduce myself to your kids and hopefully have them introduce themselves to me. They should log on with their studentnumber@jeffcoschools.us email account as this is a platform that Jeffco has provided.

Solo and Ensemble Fees
Parents, if your student paid a fee for the Solo and Ensemble festival (which was cancelled due to Covid-19), you may request your check or cash from Jade Zentz on the same day that you return your other school materials and clean out lockers.
Summer Theater
If you have registered for summer theater, we are postponing the event. We are hoping to move this camp but are waiting on district guidance. If we can’t make this camp happen this summer, we will look at moving it to weekends, Winter Break, Spring Break, performing next summer, crediting families for another camp next summer, offering the chance to make a donation or refunding fees. If you have questions about this please email Shawna Mendez at shawnamendez@hotmail.com.
Choir Update
Next year we will have three choirs! We have added Resonance which will be our elite ensemble. We will have new attire for this ensemble and it is listed on the supply list and on Mrs. Mendez's website if you would like a sneak peek!
