Celebrate Sherwood Schools: Hawks View Elementary Month
As you may know, our district's theme for this year is "Celebrate Sherwood Schools!" This year-long theme is all about celebrating what is great about our schools, focusing on the achievements of our amazing students -- and on expressing our gratitude to you, our parents and families, for your role in those achievements!
As part of this year-long focus on celebration, each month we will highlight one of the six schools in our district. This month, please join us in celebrating Hawks View Elementary School!
Hawks View Elementary first opened at its current location in fall of 2020 -- but did you know this elementary school used to have a different name and location? Prior to 2020, this school was named Hopkins Elementary, and was located right next door in the J. Clyde Hopkins building (now home of the District Office) originally built in 1950.
Moving to its current location -- the former home of Sherwood Middle School -- allowed this elementary school to increase its enrollment capacity, and Hawks View is now home to over 460 students (as well as over 70 teachers and staff).
Since reopening in its new location, Hawks View Elementary has become the home of some amazing programs for students. Continuing to offer a strong PreK program at this school has provided opportunities for more Sherwood early learners to be served by the district, and Hawks View is the only school in the district to provide a Dual Language Immersion program. The school is home to a number of student clubs and activities, such as Chess Club, Passport Club, Oregon Battle of the Books, and Choir (which has over 70 student participants this year!)
The original mascot of Hopkins Elementary was the “Hopkins Hawk,” and part of the reason for selecting the name Hawks View during the school’s transformation was to pay homage to this part of the school’s history and honor the existing bond of the school community. While looking a bit different than before, the hawk has remained as the school’s mascot. Now named Thunder, the hawk represents the strength of the school community, and the open wings of the bird in flight represents the ability of Hawks View students to soar in their achievements.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Hawks View Elementary during the month of February! To learn more about Hawks View Elementary, visit their website at https://hv.sherwood.k12.or.us. Additionally, Hawks View families are invited to participate in Family Bingo Night on February 9th, or be a part of the school’s STEM night on February 29th -- check your school newsletters from Principal Amy Mitchell for details!
Another great way to celebrate Hawks View is to support the Hawks View Elementary PAC!
