A Message From Our Healthy Lifestyles Chair, Kimberly Montini
POST-HALLOWEEN CANDY OVERLOAD
Eating all the Halloween candy at once and excessive sugar consumption can lead to health issues like tooth decay, weight gain, and potential blood sugar spikes. When blood sugar spikes, the body produces more insulin to bring it down. This can lead to hormonal changes that increase oil production in the skin - causing acne breakouts. It's important to teach moderation and healthy eating habits, even when it comes to occasional treats like Halloween candy; while a small amount is fine, overindulging can be detrimental to their overall health.
Key points to consider:
Sugar overload:
Eating too much candy at once can cause stomach upset, energy crashes, and potential behavioral changes due to a rapid rise and fall in blood sugar levels.
Dental health:
Frequent sugar exposure can contribute to tooth decay, especially if children don't brush their teeth properly after eating candy.
Nutritional imbalance:
Candy is primarily sugar and lacks essential nutrients, so consuming large quantities can displace healthier food options in a child's diet.
