Principal's Message
April brings more daylight hours and hope that warmer days are just around the corner. Students love learning outside and are already involved in various outdoor activities. The garden program restarted this month and students are putting their gardening skills to good use with Teresa Hay-Sabourin. The good work done in the fall has resulted in tulips and daffodils gracing the school garden. Environmental stewardship has also been on the minds of our Kindergarten students who went to the nearby stream with Indigenous Support Worker, Dallas Guss. Together with the Kindergarten teachers, they helped to tidy, clean, and prepare the creek for the salmon release at Princess Park next week. Teachers also are preparing springtime activities and events including Carisbrooke's Arts Celebration evening on April 25, the NVSD Battle of the Books on April 29 at the ESC, our Ready, Set, Learn outdoor preschooler event on May 10, and the Scholastic Book Fair running April 23 - 25. Staff and students are enjoying the new pickleball and tennis equipment and Track and Field practices are in full swing. It's not too late for grade 4 - 7 students to join the track or field team, just let your child's teacher know.
Staff members are also looking ahead to class compositions and student placement for the next school year. You will find information on the class placement process and an invitation for parents/ guardians to provide input. Lastly, thinking way ahead to the fall, if you've ever considered hosting an international student in your home, the North Vancouver School District is looking for homestay families. My family hosted a grade 12 student from Brazil this fall and it was a wonderful experience. See more information on becoming a homestay family below.
Carisbrooke Family Fun Night June 21
Hold the date! The PAC has organized an after-school family social to celebrate the end of the school year. There will be food trucks, ice cream, a bouncy castle, slides, and carnival games. This event will be from 4 - 8 pm outside the school. SIGN UP for tickets ( no charge ) on Munchalunch (link below) so they can gauge the number of attendees. Please get a ticket for each member of your family who plans to attend. Munch (munchalunch.com) (Click "Family Fun Night" tab) A volunteer sign up sheet will be sent out shortly. We hope you'll come by!
Homestay Families
Homestay families needed
Each year, the North Vancouver School District welcomes students from around the world to live and study in our vibrant community. We strive to place secondary school nternational students with families who live close to school to support each student's integration into the school and wider community.
There are secondary school international students in need of a homestay placement for the school term beginning September 2024. If you are interested in hosting an international student, please reach out to our International Education program office at international@sd44.ca. More information about the homestay program is available on the International Education section of the school district website.
Parent / Guardian Input for the 2024/25 School Year
The staff soon begin organizing student class placements for September. This is a responsibility we approach seriously to place students in the best learning environment possible. The process is complex and involves detailed discussion between the principal, vice-principal, current classroom teacher/s, learning service teachers, support staff, and the school counsellor.
Considerations in the placement process include:
· Contractual Obligations (Ministry class size limits / number of students with diverse needs)
· Instructional Criteria (learning styles / work habits / individual strengths and needs)
· Social Dynamics (friendships / group dynamics / positive leaders)
· Recommendations (teacher /School Based Resource Team ( SBRT ) recommendations)
· Input (Parents/ Guardians)
If you have information to share regarding the educational needs of your child (ren) please forward to Ms. Lawson via email (alawson@sd44.ca ) with the subject heading Classroom Placement Input. The deadline to submit input is Monday, June 3, 2024. Parents are welcome to discuss next year's placement with their child's teacher but a written submission to the principal is necessary to track parent/ guardian input properly. Written requests will be shared with all staff members, as such, requests that name individual teachers (or classmates) are not acceptable and will not be considered.
Our goal is to form a positive, learning community for our students, our school, and each of next year’s classes. Many hours go into the placement process and we do our very best to create the most positive placements and class groupings as possible.
Classroom placement changes will not be permitted once the school year begins.
Playground Buddy Team
Twenty playground buddies are now on the playground in their new pink jackets and making recess and lunch a lot of fun. Playground buddies invite students to play games or have fun with sidewalk chalk, balls, and skipping ropes. They even have band-aides in their pockets just in case. Buddies are always on the look out to include those without someone to play with, making everyone feel included and special .
Carisbrooke Arts Celebration - 5 - 7 pm on April 25
Mark your calendars for next Thursday's Art Show in the school gym. The gallery will showcase art work students have completed throughout the school year, across all grades. Learn about the ‘Studio Habits of Mind’, the tools used in print making and sculpting, and have the chance to purchase some framed art work in our silent auction. Refreshments will be sold by PAC and you can also stop by the Book Fair in the library that evening too. We look forward to seeing you there!

Ready Set Learn at Carisbrooke!
We invite all preschoolers in the community to come play, discover, and explore at our Ready Set Learn event on Friday, May 10. Kindergarten teachers have prepared several activities for children and our Teacher Librarian can't wait to share this year's story We All Play by B.C. author, Julie Flett. Families will receive a copy of this wonderful story and a tote bag with learning materials to enjoy over the summer. Please spread the news to the preschoolers in your life! All preschoolers are invited. We can't wait to see you there! Space is limited and families must reserve a spot.
