Spartan Star Safety for the Solar Eclipse
Hi Families,
I am excited to have us all return to school tomorrow on Monday to begin the home stretch of the 23/24 school year! This is the time of year where energy builds as the season becomes warmer, anticipation for the fun of the remainder of the year keeps us motivated, and we still have plenty of time to see nice gains in learning take place. Below is a note about the Solar Eclipse and guidance/information we are sharing with families and staff so that we have a plan to ensure safety during the school day.
On April 8, 2024, there will be a total solar eclipse across the southern portion of the US to the Northeast. McFarland is in the Nope area of the map which means we will have a partial solar eclipse (12:51-3:19 pm). If it is cloudy on April 8, the eclipse will be less cool.
We will have recess as normal that day. We’ll instruct students to not look at the sun that day, or ever (on morning announcements).
No one should look at the partial eclipse without following proper safety precautions.
Teachers can make indirect viewing methods with students if they'd like to go outside when it occurs.
Looking at the sun is always dangerous. During an eclipse, some people think it's safe to look at the sun because it can be a bit darker than "regular" sun, but it's not!
Resources:
NASA safety tips link and NASA video (has a bit more content vocab, but no safety tips)
DPI resources
BrainPop video
How to make a solar eclipse viewer video (geared towards younger kids).
National Geographic video. It includes safety and how to make a pinhole viewer. In that video they mention it is safe to take off glasses at totality but remember, we are not in the path of totality, so that will not be true for us.
16 minute PBS eclipse video. The video is broken into sections if a teacher only wants to show specific parts to their class, including the part about how to build an eclipse viewer and/or what you will see during the eclipse.
Thanks for reading!

Health Services
Measles: Facts & Information
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The CDC has reported measles cases are currently occurring in multiple states – CDC Measles Cases and Outbreaks. The McFarland School District Health Services would like to take this opportunity to provide some information about measles and how to prevent it. Measles is a viral infection that causes fever, cough, a rash, sore eyes, and can lead to serious complications. Measles spreads very easily, so it is important to protect against infection. Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent measles. DHS - Measles Fact Sheet
Two doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine provide the best protection against disease. These doses must be separated by at least 28 days. MMR vaccine is routinely recommended between 12-15 months and the second dose before entering school, at 4-6 years. Waivers to the school requirements are available for religious, health, and personal conviction reasons. However, in the event of an outbreak of measles students with waivers may be excluded from school until the outbreak is declared over.
It is important for you to check your child’s immunization records to make sure they have received two doses of MMR vaccine. You may check your child’s immunization record by logging on to the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR). You may also see your child's school immunization record on Infinite Campus > Health. Your local health department, family health care provider or online health MyChart may also have your child’s immunization record. If you have specific questions for the MSD Health Services Department, please reach out to District Nurse, Stephanie Peplinski at peplins@mcfsd.org, (608)838-4679. Thank you
