Williams-Cone School is a safe and kind school community that inspires every student to succeed.
-Compassionate, Curious, Confident Learners-
Hello Williams-Cone School Community!
Living and Working in Space Assembly
Brian Ewenson (pictured above and below) a recognized top aerospace expert in Canada and NASA's Space programs shared his experiences as an aerospace educator with WCS students yesterday, May 2nd. This assembly, sponsored by the Maine Space Grant Consortium, was part of the Maine Space Day activities that have been taking place this week in schools throughout Maine. Sharon Eggleston (pictured below), friend of the Pride family (pictured below), is the New England Regional Space Day Coordinator and also accompanied Mr. Ewenson. Mr Ewenson shared his vast experiences as an aerospace educator, captivating students with stories, videos and visuals that accurately depicted all facets of life in space from eating to haircuts!
Kid's Academy- First Grade Lego Club
First grade students recently had an opportunity to join together to create objects of all shapes and sizes during an after-school Kids Academy Lego Club. As you can see, they love creating together!
Thank-you FOWC for providing these great opportunities!
Kids Academy-Nature Club for 4th Graders
Fourth grade students, under the leadership of Shana Stewart-Deeds, came together after school to celebrate Earth Day and spring. Students had an indoor activity on amphibians and vernal pools and then headed outside to take a walk around the playground/trails and listened for frogs.
Kid's Academy-5th Grade Garden Club
5th grade garden club participants had their first session on April 22nd. During this first session students planned the garden layout and planted seeds in pots to get their seedlings started. Stay tuned to see what comes next!
Awesome Author Visit!
Children's author Matt Heagerty visited WCS last week as part of the "Awesome Author" grant provided by the district's education foundation, "Trust for Our Future" and FOWC. Matt Heagerty, a graphic novel author, mesmerized the students with his presentation that focused on creative collaboration in comics, giving students the opportunity to actively engage in creating comic characters during his presentation. Students also had the opportunity to give creative direction, suggestion and guidance as Matt brought student generated characters to life. Part of Matt's presentation focused on his sharing with students the personal struggles he's had as an individual with dyslexia and the many obstacles he's overcome as a result. Students also had the opportunity to purchase copies of Matt's current graphic novel, "Lumberjackula" and classroom teachers read the book to students throughout the week.
A Few Happenings Around WCS
5th Graders Visit Growstown School in Brunswick
Fourth Grade Visits Cathance River Education Alliance (CREA)
WCS Student Exhibits at the District Art Show
A Few Remarks from Mrs. Rineer
May is here and we call it "May Mayhem" WCS style! This is actually a very positive statement as we have a wide variety of exciting opportunities taking place over the next several weeks for our students. These opportunities range from field trips to field days, so please take a look at the calendar and consider how you can best support your student(s) and our school community during this wonderfully busy season!
We are looking forward to hosting the "Arts Night" this coming Wednesday, May 8th from 5-7:00 P.M. There will be choral performances by our 4th and 5th grade chorus and Tiger Choir as well art projects on display. The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the Learning Commons and refreshments will be available outside the staff room in the Williams Wing. We hope to see you there!
We are still taking registrations for the 2024-2025 incoming Kindergarten class with Kindergarten screening taking place on Monday, May 20th. Having a smooth and successful transition into kindergarten is very important to our school team, so there are several "Cub Club" opportunities for incoming kindergarten students that are listed in the "Important Dates" section of this newsletter and highlighted in this newsletter. We currently have a very small incoming kindergarten class (less than 25 students are currently enrolled), so please help us spread the word that we are actively receiving kindergarten registrations. Thank-you!
Thank-you WCS community for your continued support. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student(s)' teachers and/or myself if we can be of any support or asisstance.
Your Principal,
Randa
