Wild Cat ROAR!
Steuart W. Weller Elementary Weekly Newsletter
Principal Newsletter:
February 3, 2025
Dear Families:
We are excited to have a full week of school. Second Quarter Report Cards will be published in ParentVue after 5pm today. If you cannot access the report card, please give it a day or two as the Student Information System can become overloaded when lots of people are trying to access it.
We are still completing Winter MAP testing for grades 1-5. Once the testing window closes, the MAP reports will also be available in ParentVue. We will let you know when those are ready to be viewed.
Please remind your children that if they bring a coat to school, you want them to bring it home, too, on the same day! We would really like for our students to hang on to their belongings. Right now we have a substantial water bottle collection. If your child is missing theirs, tell them to check the lost & found which is located in the front hall.
Respectfully yours,
Julia Burton, Principal
Giving Out Cards on Valentine's Day:
In keeping with current practices designed to protect the health and safety of all children, elementary students in Loudoun County Public Schools are not permitted to distribute candy or other food items to classmates. As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is important for parents to understand that candy brought to school by students, including candy attached to Valentine’s Day cards, will be returned to the parent. Children are permitted to share Valentine's Day cards with each other, but they cannot give out candy.” Children can only give out CARDS! This is a safe gesture of kindness!
National School Counseling Week:
We are so excited to celebrate our School Counselors during National School Counseling Week (NSCW) from February 3rd-7th. This year’s theme is “School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive."
Here in LCPS, we believe that school counselors are the heart of the school! At each level and school, we see our school counselors going above and beyond to meet the needs of their students. Starting in Elementary school, counselors provide bi-weekly lessons focusing on academic, career and college readiness and personal-social development.
Take a moment and reach out to our to our counselors, Mrs. Jochems and Ms. McKelley, and thank them for all that they do for our Weller Wild Cats!

Special Permission to Attend Another School:
At the December 10, 2024, School Board meeting, the Loudoun County School Board approved changes to the Special Permission process in Policy 8155, School Assignment. Special Permission is when LCPS parents/guardians request permission for their student to attend a school outside their assigned attendance zone. Changes to the Special Permission process were made to ensure schools can plan earlier and more accurately for staffing and class sizes.
Some of the key changes to the Special Permission process are:
- The dates the Special Permission process opens and closes will occur earlier in the year.
- Special Permission applications to over-enrolled schools, including elementary schools, will not be accepted.
- Late applications will not be accepted after the deadline. To apply for Special Permission, parents/legal guardians must have a current LCPS address on file.
Important factors:
- To apply for Special Permission, parents/legal guardians must have a current LCPS address on file.
- Students must be registered at their zoned school of attendance within 30 days of applying for Special Permission.
- Special Permission may be approved only if there is capacity at the requested school.
- Except for kindergarten, LCPS will make an initial decision regarding Special Permission requests within 30 days of application submission. LCPS will determine kindergarten Special Permission placement decisions no later than July 1.
- If approved to attend a school on Special Permission, families must provide transportation to and from the school.
- All families who wish to apply and/or renew for Special Permission must do so annually.
Please note that Special Permission for the LCPS community opens on Monday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. and will remain open until April 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
Official determinations for kindergarten students who apply for special permission by April 30 will be provided to the parent or legal guardian by July 1.
Parents of elementary students currently on special permission may submit a request to continue attending the Special Permission school on or before March 1.
Once the Special Permission period closes on April 30, requests for Special Permission will not be accepted. Previously, parents who made Special Permission requests outside the Special Permission period were permitted to appeal a Special Permission denial. This practice will no longer be permitted.
