The SBHS Social Studies Department worked in conjunction with the SBHS Student Council to hold the first large-scale voter registration drive in many years. The drive, which was held last Thursday and Friday, coincided with “National High School Voter Registration week” and successfully registered 90 students.
The drive was largely student-led with student volunteers manning the tables and students in “Political Literacy and Civic Education (PLACE)” class encouraging their classmates to register. In addition, Students Chi-Ray Hsu (12), Riley Green (11), and Rishita Nossam (11) helped gather supplies and organize the registration process.
The New Jersey Department of Education mandates that schools distribute voter registration materials, a summary of voter registration eligibility requirements, materials describing the role of a citizen and materials articulating the importance of voting to all eligible high school students prior to their graduation.
