The Best of 2023-2024
As the school year comes to an end, we wanted to take some time to review a number of the "best" topics that we have covered in these Instructional Minutes. A comprehensive list of this school year's Minutes can be found here on our district website!
Formative Assessments
Formative Assessments are instrumental in maximizing student achievement. Results are used to monitor student learning and adjust instruction. By consistently monitoring and checking up on students’ academic progress and using a formative assessment process, teachers can correct and minimize the obstacles in students’ paths. Formative assessments are any measures or indicators a teacher uses during a lesson to monitor what students know and do not know. They can be completed in a variety of ways but are often quick and ungraded. An exit ticket is just one example of an effective formative assessment. Formative assessments can be used by both teachers and students as a means to improve learning.
Workshop Model: A Continuous Cycle of Teaching & Learning
Learning is a process of continuously modifying knowledge and skills. Sometimes new inputs call for additions and extensions to existing knowledge structures; at other times they call for radical reconstruction. In all cases, feedback is essential to guide, test, challenge, or redirect the learner's thinking. (Sawyer, 2006) Formative Assessment is this feedback.
