November Newsletter
Thank you to Lincoln PTO, the Wegmeyer family, Mr. Potts, Mr. Flores, volunteers, students, families, and staff for an outstanding PTO Fall Festival! The students enjoyed each of the activities and we appreciate all of the work for this event.
Lincoln Elementary has recently received two special awards for our outstanding academic achievement during the 2023-2024 school year! Niche.com has recognized Lincoln as one of the top 100 elementary schools in Virginia. The link to this recognition is below.
https://www.niche.com/k12/lincoln-elementary-school-purcellville-va/
The Virginia Department of Education has also recognized Lincoln Elementary with the highest exemplary award for academic achievement! This is a special recognition that five elementary schools in Loudoun earned.
https://www.doe.virginia.gov/Home/Components/News/News/425/227
Part of the exemplary award is our rate for chronic absenteeism (students who have missed 10% or more of the school days). Our current rate is 12.1% and our goal for the end of the year is to decrease this percentage to below 8%. Please continue to use the LCPS calendar for planning family trips. Our chronic absenteeism rate for the end of the year last year was 9.8 %. For comparison, our rate during 2021-2022 was 2.5%. Excused absences and unexcused absences are both counted for the chronic absenteeism rate.
On Monday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m., Lincoln Elementary will host a Veterans Day program for veterans, students, staff, families, and guests. We encourage all families and guests to attend this special tradition. If you have a photo of a veteran for this program, please email the photo to Dr. Farrell at Nancy.Farrell@lcps.org by November 4. Lincoln Community League members and friends of Lincoln are also invited to attend this program.
Our parent liaison, Sally Ann Tennyson, is organizing a coat, hat, and glove drive for Loudoun families. We will have boxes in the multipurpose room for donations from November 6- December 1. Thank you for your support for this project.
Lincoln Elementary has been invited to attend the Washington Commanders game on Sunday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m. Please see the attached flyer for discounted ticket information and details. After the game, the Lincoln group will be allowed on the field for a group photo.
We are looking forward to these upcoming events! Please call me at (540) 751-2430 or email me at Dave.Michener@lcps.org if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dave Michener

Trick O’ Treating in the village is festive and fun for all ages!
October 31st, 2024. Town hours for trick o’ treating are 6pm - 9pm. The village trick o’ treating tends to be the most active 6pm - 8pm, and ends around 8:30. We hope to have a trunk o’ treat in the parking lot at the Friends Meeting House again this year. Those friends and neighbors who want to set up to decorate and hand out candy are welcome; spots are first come, first serve. More to come in in the next couple of weeks! Keep an eye out for updates on the Lincoln PTO and LCL facebook pages.

Mrs. Clark and Mr. Armstrong
It has been a busy month of October in PE! We want to thank all the family members who came to “Family PE week”! It is so much fun to share with you the things we do and learn every class during PE. This month we worked on throwing skills, as well as kicking skills. We learned about the bones in the body as well with our skeleton Davy Bones.
This month, we will be working on speed stacking, jumping rope, as well as talking about healthy hydration choices. With the winter months coming, making sure we are hydrated is important. It boosts our immune system as well as helps with keeping our brain ready to learn!
I hope everyone has a fantastic November!

Guidance
Ms. Torres
In the month of November in the school counseling lessons the focus for the students will be to continue to learn about the Second Step Bully Prevention lessons. We will continue to talk about the 3 R’s Recognize, Report and Refuse.

Ms. Oliver
Autumn is upon us and, along with cooler weather and more time spent indoors, children and families may begin to experience symptoms of a cold or the flu. The most important daily activity to prevent the spread of infections is practicing good and frequent hand washing – that means rubbing your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds or more – just hum the birthday song!
In addition, plan for your child to be spending time outdoors – students have daily recess and dressing in layers ensures they are comfortable while playing, running, and keeping active! Remember to wear sneakers on your scheduled PE class days during the week.
Stay well hydrated – encourage your child to bring their water bottle/thermos to school every day. Drinking water throughout their school day helps to ease and often eliminate symptoms of headache, stomachache, constipation, muscle cramps and nasal and chest congestion. Drinking plenty of fluids boosts physical energy and promotes mental sharpness that play an important role in a successful day of learning and growing for all our Lincoln Leopards.
Have a happy and healthy November and Thanksgiving holiday!
Art
Mrs. Bougie
Art class in November will be full of more fall art projects! In Kindergarten and first grade, we will continue to work on our drawing and painting skills and learning about warm and cool colors. In second grade, we will be making a fall collage using several art mediums. Third grade will be creating an up-close pumpkin using chalk pastels and fourth grade will be drawing a fall still life. Finally, fifth grade will be finishing a detailed mixed media project and then working on a realistic Alaskan animal drawing! It's going to be a great month!
Thank you,

Music
Mrs. Vanderpuye
The students have been working diligently in class to prepare for our Veterans Day Program on November 11th, where we will honor our Veterans. I’m so proud of all their effort over the past few weeks in music. The Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders have also started learning music for their upcoming musical on December 17th. Our Second graders are revisiting rhythm reading and are pairing it with iconic notation to play pitched instruments. First graders and Kindergarten students continue to develop mastery in steady beat, rhythm, and singing in their head voice. They’ll also be playing barred instruments to accompany simple songs using Simple and Broken Bordun techniques.

We have been enjoying fall in the library. The younger grades have been enjoying some spooky tales and exploring the differences between fiction and non-fiction books. Older classes have been participating in digital literacy lessons and making some science connections. In November K-2 will be introduced to the Virginia Readers’ Choice titles for this year, while the older grades will continue with Common Sense digital literacy lessons. Grades three and four will continue with guided Scratch coding lessons in CS First every other week and will be working on more challenging coding projects as their skills improve. Fifth will be combining research with tools like weVideo, Canva, or Thinglink.

Creativity is a trait that is present in every person and one that can be improved with practice! In fact, creativity is more skill than inborn talent. Creativity is not limited to artistic and musical expression—it is also an essential ingredient for science, math, and even social and emotional intelligence. Creative people are more flexible and better problem solvers, which makes them more able to adapt to technological advances and deal with change—as well as take advantage of new opportunities.
How can you help your child be creative? Here are just a few suggestions:
Provide resources to your child - the most precious resource being TIME. Allow time for your child to try out new ideas! A creative mind needs time to think, wander, and wonder.
Encourage your child to embrace their mistakes and view failures as opportunities. Let them know it is ok to flub up - share your own mistakes and laugh together about them. Creativity involves a certain amount of risk, and it is ok to be wrong or make mistakes.
Foster a creative atmosphere and celebrate innovation. Solicit a high volume of different ideas, but resist the urge to evaluate the ideas your kids come up with. At dinnertime, for example, you could brainstorm activities for the upcoming weekend, encouraging the kids to come up with things they've never done before. Don't point out which ideas aren't possible, and don't decide which ideas are best. The focus of creative activities should be on process: generating (vs. evaluating) new ideas.
