June Newsletter
Thank you to the Lincoln PTO, Lincoln families, Lincoln fifth grade students, Lincoln Community League, Mrs. Reed, and Mrs. Beasley for your work and support for the Lincoln Strawberry Festival! This was a wonderful community event and we thank the Wegmeyer family for their support for Lincoln Elementary School. Thank you also to Abernethy and Spencer nursery for donating several flowers and plants and mulch for the front garden beds and the front sign flower bed! The school grounds are beautiful and we appreciate their continued partnership. Thank you also to Ms. Woodcheke, the Lincoln PTO, and parent volunteers for a special Staff Appreciation Week! The Lincoln staff enjoyed the lunch, breakfast, games, flowers, and the book of notes was very thoughtful.
Thank you also to Mrs. Vanderpuye, the Lincoln students, and families for a fantastic Talent Show! This was a wonderful evening and I was proud of the Lincoln students for supporting each other.
We thank Kristin Washko for all of her work with the Lincoln first grade students! Mrs. Washko has decided to leave her first grade teaching position to spend more time with her dad in North Carolina and other family members. She plans to return to Lincoln and help sub during the next school year. Mrs. Washko has made a tremendous impact with her first grade students and we are grateful for her work. We are pleased to welcome Alison Schaefer as our first grade teacher next year! Mrs. Schaefer has taught first grade for the past seven years at Moorefield Station Elementary. She has a passion for technology and she is looking forward to joining the Lincoln staff! Mrs. Schaefer lives in Purcellville with her family and she enjoys crafting and baking.
This summer, Lincoln Elementary will have our front vestibule installed and also an ADA access elevator installed by our stage. The wood floor in our multipurpose room will also be refinished. These projects are expected to start on June 17 and be completed by August 12. If you are stopping by the school during the summer, please use the side ramp door to enter the school. The office for the summer will be in our art/music room.
We thank Mrs. Clark, teachers, staff members, and parents for supporting our Field Day on Thursday, June 6! We need at least 8 additional parent volunteers for this event and please see the PTBoard site to sign up. Students will need to wear sneakers and each student should bring sunglasses, a hat, a water bottle, and a towel. Students may get wet during a few activities, but students should not wear bathing suits. Please also apply sunscreen on your child at home before school on June 6. Teachers and staff members are not allowed to put sunscreen on children. Thank you to the Lincoln PTO for providing watermelon and popsicles for a treat during lunch on Field Day. Mrs. Palmer will be serving a school lunch of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and other regular lunch menu options. Students may also bring a bag lunch from home.
The Online Pre-Registration portal for kindergartners and new LCPS students is open! The LCPS student registration process involves two steps: online pre-registration and in-person registration appointments.
During the online pre-registration, parents/guardians create ParentVue accounts, upload the required documents and provide information about their child. Parents/guardians are advised to determine their zoned school and to contact that school with any questions. Once pre-registration has been submitted, the school registrars will contact the parents/guardians within five days to schedule a registration appointment. Parents/guardians may also contact the zoned school directly.
Thank you to each Lincoln family, student, teacher, and staff member for an outstanding school year! During a conversation with a safety patrol this morning, I asked her what her favorite part about Lincoln was and she shared that the teachers and staff are kind and caring to the students. I agreed with her and I truly appreciate the teamwork and support from everyone for the Lincoln students. I wish each family a relaxing summer with your family members and friends!
Sincerely,
Dave Michener

PTO News
As the school year comes to a close, we want to thank each of you for your dedication to Lincoln Elementary and the PTO! A big thank you to the outgoing PTO Board for all of your hard work and dedication throughout the year! In order to ensure that the PTO is supporting the school and kiddos as best as possible, we’ll be sending out a year-end survey to all of our families. Please watch your inbox for this survey, or you’ll be able to find it directly on PTBoard in the coming week.
Thank you to the many volunteers who helped to make the Pancake Breakfast at the Lincoln Strawberry Festival possible! In particular, we want to acknowledge and thank Krista Ramey, Melanie Pawluk, and Adam Davis for organizing this fantastic community event. It was also wonderful to see many of our families and staff attending the festival and breakfast. We’re still tallying the total raised, but anticipate that it was a successful fundraiser for LES.
Mark your calendars: Our final LES Spirit Night for the year will be at Monk’s BBQ and Tipped Cow Creamery on Thursday, June 13 from 4:00- 9:00p.m. This is during the last week of school, so it’s the perfect time for a year-end celebration that also supports Lincoln! Be sure to invite your friends and family too! You can either dine-in or carry-out, just be sure to mention Lincoln Elementary.

Mrs. Clark
Thank you for such another wonderful year at Lincoln! It has been a joy to work with each of our students this year. We have had a lot of fun this month learning about golf and tennis skills as well as starting some base games. The students also participated in fitness assessments. For June we will be focusing on batting skills and some of our favorite games!
Field Day will be held on Thursday June 6 (Rain date June 7). Please have your students wear PE shoes that day as well as sunscreen. All students should bring a water bottle that day as well. Thank you in advance to all the parents who have volunteered to make field day successful for our students!
Guidance
Ms. Torres
In the counseling lessons we are wrapping up SchooLink lessons. The students had fun exploring this new program. The Fourth and Fifth graders came into the Kindergarten and First grade classes to help get the students started. Older and younger students had a great time working together.
As the year is ending, we will take time to reflect on the year and explore the transition to the next grade level. Each grade level has its own unique changes. Our Kindergarten are no longer the youngest. The Second-grade students will now be considered the older students. The biggest transition is with our 5th grade as they head off to middle school. They are excited about the upcoming visit to Blue Ridge Middles on June 10.
As the school year ends, I wish everyone a wonderful summer! I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall when I am back full time at Lincoln!

Music
Mrs. Vanderpuye
As we almost say Hello, Summer! I also want to thank you all for your support of music and the programs. This year the students did amazing!! 4th and 5th Grade will continue playing recorder. 4th graders should keep their instruments in good condition over the summer as we will play them again in 5th grade. All Grades are learning a song to perform at the end of year ceremony. 3rd grade is finishing up their puppet show. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade will do iconic rhythmic compositions. To wrap up the year we also will be doing some percussion activities with the Boomwhackers. I hope you all keep music in your heart and minds and find time to listen to different music. Have a fantastic, musical summer!

A big THANK YOU to families that supported our spring book fair! It was a busy week in a busy season and I appreciate all that helped make it happen. Thanks especially to Krista Ramey, Melanie Pawluk, Maureen Fulkerson, and Tiffany Woodcheke. Our Lincoln students are lucky to have such a supportive group of parents!
Summer reading is the focus in the library this month. The local public library system has a wonderful summer reading program. Lincoln students have won the summer reading trophy from the Purcellville branch twice in recent years, and I will be encouraging students to sign up and participate. There are many eBooks, audiobooks, and other resources available for free through our library as well as the public library. They are a great option when you want a book and have a device, even if you’re far from home. Hopefully your students will find some great reads to enjoy over the summer. We will be celebrating with students that read over the summer when we get back to school in the fall.
I highly recommend the site CommonSenseMedia.org for parents looking for guidance as to books, movies, and games that are appropriate for your children. Each family is different, and this site offers clear detailed descriptions of all kinds of media so that families can make educated decisions for themselves.
Last, but not least, since the school year is almost over it’s time to start looking for library books so that we can get them all back in the library! Please keep an eye out for overdue notices coming home in backpacks and help your student(s) find any library books under the beds, in the couch cushions, in the car, etc. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me at paula.dillon@lcps.org. I am here to help support our families in any way I can.
Have a wonderful summer!

Mrs. Cornell
Summer is a fantastic time to explore, experiment and be a scientist! Pay close attention and observe the world around you and keep track of any change you notice. Here is a quick list of summer ideas you can try out:
Plant seeds and record how quickly the seeds germinate and grow.
Try out some designs for a wind-proof shelter made out of sticks and leaves. Test with a fan!
Cook s’mores using a solar oven
Make a compass by rubbing a paperclip on a magnet in one direction, and place on something small floating in a bowl of water (slice of cork or foam). Use it to go on a treasure hunt.
Create a scavenger hunt using science and engineering characteristics in the clues. (i.e. “Something that gets energy from the Sun; “a lever”)
Use a nature app (i.e. Seek or iNaturalist) to identify as many different plants and animals as you can in your yard.
Happy summer exploring!!
