Week of April 22nd
What's Happening This Week: 🏃🎨
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope you and your family had a great weekend.
The 7th grade Springfield trip is taking place tomorrow, April 23. Students must be dropped off at our school by 6 am. Students will be back at Columbia around 9 pm tomorrow evening. This trip has always been a transformative experience for our students. I am sure they will have many stories to tell upon their return.
The Illinois Science Assessment is taking place Monday through Thursday of this week for students in 5th and 8th grade. Please make sure your child is in the building on time each day of testing as this is an important assessment.
We recently wrapped up the IAR state assessment for all students at Columbia. We thank our staff for all of their work in preparing our students for this assessment and motivating our students to perform at their best. I have never seen a staff so prepared for this assessment. Our students were enthusiastic as well. Featured below you will see Ms. Shelton (Math Coach), Mrs. Smith (ELA Coach) and Ms. Pickrum (ELA teacher) dishing out ice cream for students that demonstrated extreme effort and time on the assessment while exemplifying excellent attendance throughout the testing schedule.
Pictured below you will see Dr. McConnell, Steger School District 194 Superintendent, featured with students and staff involved with the Columbia Central Middle School chess team. Our chess team recently competed in a state competition and performed extremely well. We thank our chess team coaches, Mrs. Dempsey, Mr. Vaughn, and Ms. Chiaponni for their expertise in coaching and mentoring our students. We are so proud of our chess team and all of their accomplishments.
Progress reports for this trimester are being mailed out to parents this Wednesday. Please take a moment to review your child's progress thus far and feel free to reach out to any staff members should you have any questions. Please take note of other events happening this week at Columbia.
Let's make it a great week!

SEL Second Step Program
Dear Parents,
In this week’s Second Step lesson, Your child will continue to learn how to solve interpersonal problems and the difference between minor and major conflicts. They will learn common reasons why social conflicts escalate. They will practice ways to de-escalate conflicts. They will brainstorm ways to resolve minor and major conflicts.
Parents, try this at home. Ask your child about a conflict they experienced this past week, and have them tell you how they resolved it or how they plan to resolve it.
