Supporting Your Child's Educational Journey through Consistent Attendance:
Regular attendance is more than just being present in the classroom; it is about being engaged, building relationships, and fully participating in the learning process. Each day your child attends school, they have the opportunity to develop new skills, deepen their understanding, and connect with their peers and teachers. Consistent attendance helps create a stable routine, fosters a sense of belonging, and supports academic success.
I understand that life can sometimes present challenges that make regular attendance difficult. However, every day missed is a day of valuable learning lost. Together, we can work to overcome these challenges and ensure your child has every opportunity to thrive.
Here are a few ways you can support your childβs consistent attendance:
Set a Routine: Establish a regular bedtime and morning routine to help your child start each day refreshed and ready to learn.
Plan Ahead: Schedule appointments and family vacations during school breaks or after school hours whenever possible.
Stay Informed: Keep track of school events, important dates, and attendance policies. Communicate with us if your child is facing any challenges that might affect their attendance.
Encourage Engagement: Show interest in your childβs school activities and encourage them to participate fully.
Communicate with Us: If your child is ill or facing other barriers to attendance, please inform us as soon as possible. We are here to support you and can work together to find solutions.
Your partnership is essential in ensuring your childβs success. By prioritizing attendance, we are setting the stage for a bright and promising future. Letβs work together to make this school year one of growth, achievement, and joy for all our students.
Fostering a Reading Culture at Home:
As we continue our journey together in supporting your childβs educational growth, I want to highlight the importance of fostering a reading culture at home. Reading is a fundamental skill that opens doors to endless possibilities and helps shape lifelong learners. Creating a home environment that values and encourages reading can have a profound impact on your child's academic success and overall development.
Here are some simple yet effective ways to nurture a love for reading in your home:
Make Reading a Daily Habit: Set aside a dedicated time each day for reading. Whether it's a bedtime story, a few minutes after dinner, or a quiet moment in the afternoon, consistency is key.
Create a Reading Space: Designate a cozy and inviting spot in your home for reading. Fill it with a variety of books that cater to your childβs interests and reading level.
Be a Reading Role Model: Show your child that reading is a valuable and enjoyable activity by reading regularly yourself. Let them see you enjoying books, newspapers, or magazines.
Explore Different Genres: Encourage your child to explore different types of books, from fiction and non-fiction to poetry and graphic novels. This helps them discover what they enjoy and keeps reading exciting.
Visit the Library: Make regular trips to the library a fun and anticipated event. Allow your child to choose their own books and participate in library programs and events.
Engage in Reading Activities: Discuss the books your child is reading. Ask questions about the story, characters, and their favorite parts. This not only enhances comprehension but also makes reading a shared experience.
Incorporate Technology: Utilize educational apps and online resources that promote reading and literacy skills. Audiobooks and e-books can also be great alternatives to traditional reading.
Celebrate Reading Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate your child's reading achievements, whether it's finishing a book, reaching a reading goal, or mastering new vocabulary.
Your involvement and enthusiasm play a crucial role in instilling a love for reading in your child. By making reading a joyful and integral part of your familyβs daily life, you are setting the foundation for a lifetime of learning and discovery.

π Counselor's Corner π
Welcome back to another exciting school year! My name is Veronica Schmidt, and I am a Homer Community School alumni. I attended Wayne State College where I earned my Elementary Education Degree. In May 2019, I received my Masterβs Degree in Curriculum and Instruction through WSC as well. I am currently taking classes to obtain my School Counseling Degree at Chadron State University. Before coming to Homer, I taught at Wakefield Community School as the 4th β 6th grade writing teacher for four years. This will be my sixth year here in this district. I have been married to my husband, Jeff, for 23 years. We have two amazing children β Brent and Brooklynn. Brent is attending Purdue for IT Management, and Brookynn is attending UNO to become a neuropsychologist. I am both anxious and excited to see what both of their futures hold! When time allows, I love going on walks with Baylee (dog), reading, and simply hanging out with friends and family.
Although I have loved my time in the classroom, I am thrilled to share that I have transitioned from that role to the K - 5 school counselor position this year. My experience in the education field has provided me with numerous opportunities to support our youth in various capacities. More often than not, our students come to us struggling with things that aren't always in their control. Being a teacher isn't just teaching core subjects. In fact, many days involve conversing with students who are feeling troubled due to experiencing challenging situations with friends or family members. Teachers can't attempt to teach a student whose mind is filled with other obstacles or challenges. My goal with our students is to address these underlying issues to ensure that all students feel safe and comfortable in our learning environment. I am ready to embrace this passion of mine and look forward to supporting our Homer families this year! Please feel free to reach out to me anytime at veronicaschmidt@homerknights.org
