Violin Performance at AES

On Tuesday November 29th, the school was in awe as a violinist from Ashuelot concerts played chamber music in a special assembly. The musicians shared about a famous composer and spoke about the language of music. They discussed the elements of Fast & Slow. Loud & Soft High & Low, Staccato & Legato, Phrases, Major & Minor Keys, Form & Structure, and Style & Period. It was a wonderful opportunity to have been exposed to live classical music. The musicians reminded us that it takes dedication and hard work to become an accomplished musician. We look forward to hosting them again next year.

First Friends Learn About Chipmunks

Preschool Chipmunks

The Preschool had a special visit with Jaimie from the Harris Center. The students discovered how chipmunks have a special way of preparing for the winter.

Expert Learning in Library

In library, we have started an author study of Chris Van Allsburg. The first book, The Polar Express. We are working on text to text connections and understanding "text" comes in a lot of different forms. 3rd and 4th graders are becoming expert learners. We have been brainstorming ways to check our own understanding and figuring out what works best for each one of us as learners.. Some may learn best in small groups. Others may learn best 1-1 with an adult. Some may even learn best on their own. These are just a few examples. What works best for teachers while checking for understanding? Quizzes on a computer? Art projects? Oral assessment? Students are going to be coming up with their own examples to demonstrate their ability to use the library.

Also, be prepared for the fun antics of Marty Kelley on December 9th. Marty Kelley will be our special guest author visitor. Teachers, classes, and students throughout the school have been busy working on projects representing a few of Marty Kelly's books. This visit is being made possible by a grant presented to the Tuttle library for outstanding collaboration with our school. Such a great resource.

Whole Body Learning in Kindergarten

In Kindergarten we like to use our whole bodies to help us learn things like letters, numbers and sight words. This week students made paths for their friends to follow, each time saying the sight word written on the dot as they jumped on it. Connecting kinesthetics to reading is a great way to get those words in our memory!

Winter Weather is here burrr

The weather is getting colder and we do go outside ! Please remember to send your children in with labeled hats, gloves, warm coats, snow pants (soon) and boots. It's always a good idea to have an extra set of clothes available too!

The benefits of outside recess are huge.

We have seen an increase in illness in our schools.

Students who have any symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, congestion, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home.

Counseling Notes from Ms. Gregg

In classroom counseling lessons. students in first, second, third and fourth grade are continuing to learn about bullying. Most recently they have learned about being an "upstander"--an active bystander who reports and refuses bullying. The fourth grade students also are learning about cyberbullying.

Kindergarten students are learning to recognize their feelings and other people's feelings by looking for clues in facial expressions, body language, words and actions. Most recently they have explored the idea that all of us have similarities and differences, and two friends can respond to the same thing in different ways.

Students in all grades at AES are continuing to learn and practice a variety of breathing practices, "mindful movement"/yoga poses and other strategies that are helpful for emotional self-regulation.
