NEWS AND PICTURES
SCHOOL PICTURES
Waves of children and adults began visiting the room where individual portrait pictures are being taken. 9-26-2023
Blast from St. Albans Past: The very old school picture below is from the church street school in St. Albans. That building now houses the St. Albans Museum. Prior to St. Albans City School being built, the city's students went to a bunch of little schools scattered above and below the railroad tracks.
IMAGINATION 1ST GRADE MATH
Ms. Koldys showed quick flashes of shapes on the white board to see if students could quickly identify the number of objects that appeared (examples, 4, 6, 10 etc). This game made counting fun and mildly competitive. She followed this task up by asking students to use 10 small supplied physical objects (example: pattern blocks) to come up with two groups summing to 10. Her example was 5 and 5. There could have been 7 & 3, or 6 & 4, or 2 & 8 etc... In summary, having students see objects in clusters, know their total numbers and be able to arrange the objects in different ways were her goals for their lesson.

ALMA AND HOW SHE GOT HER NAME
A 2019 Caldecott Honor Book
If you ask her, Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela has way too many names: six! How did such a small person wind up with such a large name? Alma turns to Daddy for an answer and learns of Sofia, the grandmother who loved books and flowers; Esperanza, the great-grandmother who longed to travel; José, the grandfather who was an artist; and other namesakes, too. As she hears the story of her name, Alma starts to think it might be a perfect fit after all—and realizes that she will one day have her own story to tell. In her 2019 Caldecott Honor Book, Juana Martinez-Neal opens a treasure box of discovery for children who may be curious about their own
THE POET X
Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking. This young adult novel by Hispanic author Elizabeth Acevedo has won several awards and is a great read for our older students!
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
When a girl is asked where she’s from—where she’s really from—none of her answers seems to be the right one.
Unsure about how to reply, she turns to her loving abuelo for help. He doesn’t give her the response she expects. She gets an even better one.
Where am I from?
You’re from hurricanes and dark storms, and a tiny singing frog that calls the island people home when the sun goes to sleep....
With themes of self-acceptance, identity, and home, this powerful, lyrical picture book will resonate with readers young and old, from all backgrounds and of all colors—especially anyone who ever felt that they don’t belong.
