March 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians,
February was exciting! We had a rounds of snow, another FID, school-wide celebrations, and more!
We are nearing the end of the third marking period as well. Students are working hard to continue to show Lion PRIDE in and around our school. Students earned another reward last month for reaching another school-wide goal. We had staff from Fredericksen Library spend the day with each class to talk about nutritional literacy and conduct a food tasting for February's Heart Health Month.
This week we celebrate "Read Across America" Week with some special spirt days and activities to do at home. Check out the details here.
Congratulations to all of our K-5 artists who participated in the District Art Show last week. The students did a great job showing off their many faceted artistic abilities.
Let's hope the groundhog was right and March continues to be a warmer, quieter month in the weather department!
What dance move do leprechauns do at a party?

Happy March and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Leader in Me - Practicing the 7 Habits at Home
Habit #6 teaches us that Together is Better. It’s a solution-oriented mindset driven by the knowledge that working with others to solve a problem is more effective than working alone. This thought process reminds us that we may have a good idea on our own, but we can strengthen it by seeking input from others.
Habit #6 Means:
- I value other people's strengths and learn from them.
- I get along well with others, even people who are different than me.
- I work well in groups.
- I seek out other people's ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than any of us can alone.
- I am humble.
Habit #6 Brainstormer Activity
This month, sit down with your family and use the questions on the worksheet below to brainstorm how you can apply Habit 6 in your family!
Family Synergy Experiments
Perform some experiments that teach the strength of synergy, such as the following:
- Ask your children to tie their shoes with one hand. It cannot be done! Then ask another family member to help with one hand. It works! Point out how two working together can do more than one, or even two, can working separately.
- Give your children a popsicle stick. Ask them to break it. They probably will be able to do so. Now give them four or five sticks stacked together and ask them to do the same. They probably won’t be able to do it. Use this as an illustration to teach that the family together is stronger than one person alone.
- Let your children plan a meal together. Encourage them to come up with dishes such as soup, salad, or a casserole where the blending of a number of different ingredients creates something entirely new.
- Plan a family talent night. Invite all family members to share their musical or dancing talent, a sports performance, scrapbooks, writings, drawings, woodwork, or collections. Point out how wonderful it is that we all have different things to offer, and that an important part of creating synergy is learning to appreciate others’ strengths and talents.
Read a Book Together or Work on a Family Project
Read the book, Swimmy by Leo Lionni, together and talk about how the characters work together!
OR
As a family, think about projects that you would like to do around your home or community. Some ideas could include planting flowers or a garden, cleaning out a room or space in your home, cooking a meal together, or beautifying a place in your neighborhood. Make a plan for how you can work together on this project, using everyone's strengths and contributions, and do it!

Counselor's Corner
What’s happening in Guidance?
Throughout February, all students had lessons focused on personal safety. Kindergarteners learned the definition of “stranger” and ways to protect themselves and/or seek help if they are in an unsafe situation. In 1st grade, we discussed a variety of safety rules at home, school, and in the community, as well as the consequences we could experience if we don’t follow these safety rules. Second graders learned about “instincts” and played a game in which they were challenged to make quick decisions about whether a situation was safe or unsafe. As we head into March, we will be working on goal setting before moving into our career exploration lessons!
From the School Nurse
Dental Exam reminder:
The School Health Act of Pennsylvania mandates that all children in grades K/1 (original entry), 3 and 7 must have a dental examination. If you have not done so, please provide a copy of your child’s dental visit to your school nurse. Parents are encouraged to have the examination done by the private dentist familiar with your child.
If you do not have a private dentist the district will be providing school dental exams on Friday, March 15, 2024. Please contact your school nurse if you still have questions regarding dental exams. Please note that the school dental exam is a short screening exam only and not a dental cleaning or a substitute for regular dental care.
Physical Exam Reminder:
The School Health Act of Pennsylvania mandates that all children in grades K/1 (original entry), 6th and 11th grade must have a physical examination. If you have not done so, please provide a copy of your child’s physical and any updated immunizations to your school nurse. Parents are encouraged to have the examination done by the private physician familiar with your child.
If you do not have a private physician the district will be providing school physicals on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Please contact your school nurse if you still have questions regarding physicals. Please note that the school physical examination is a short screening exam only and no immunizations will be given.
