MARTY'S MINUTE
I hope you are doing well. I wanted to share a recent highlight with you. Last week, I had the pleasure of judging the Future Chefs cooking contest hosted by Sodexo. This is the first competition since 2019. Stepping into the bustling kitchen, I was struck by the energy and passion of our young chefs. This event was more than a competition—we celebrated creativity, teamwork, cultural heritage, and family. The best part of this competition was speaking with the students and learning how these recipes reflect their family and cultural traditions and passions. I offer my sincere congratulations to the students who showcased their culinary talents. Their dedication and hard work were commendable, and witnessing their love at work was a pleasure.
Thanks to the teachers, staff, and volunteers for making this event possible. I especially want to thank Sodexo for their continued dedication to providing healthy meals for our students.
Our grand prize winner was Sophia Gallegos from Jefferson Elementary, who had chicken salad a la Mexicana.
The remaining subcategory winners were:
- Originality: Sydney Fellin, Santorini Chop Salad, Dry Creek Elementary
- Easy preparation: Cohen Newlon, Lemon Parmesan Kale Salad, Hamilton Elementary
- Healthy attributes: William Nesberg, Strong People (S'Klallam) Protein Bowl, Dry Creek Elementary
- Kid friendly: Sienna Fellin, Sienna's Scrumptious Fruit Salad, Roosevelt Elementary
- Plate presentation and appearance: Gabriel Shiepko, Seafood Salad, Hamilton Elementary
- Best taste: Logn Wasnock, Logan's Crunchy Salad, Jefferson Elementary

Where are you from?
My name is Tylor Sifagaloa and I am from beautiful O'ahu Hawai'i. (Kalihi).
What is your favorite thing about your job?
Being able to build relationships with kids, watching go through a problem and figuring it out and playing outside at recess with them.
Anything you'd like to share about your family?
I am a blessed man with a beautiful wife, Jamie and together we have three beautiful children, Jase 7, Jovi-Joy 6 and Juda 3 “Juda bear”. We also have a dog name Uso and a cat Oliver.
Do you have any hobbies?
I love to cut hair, play sports but volleyball is where it’s at.
If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?
Go to a sporting event. Volleyball, football, basketball or hockey.
What is your goal for this year?
To finish on a high note.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Owning my own barber business.
What is a fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I like to sing, whether it's with my family or if I'm alone.
Anything else you'd like to share with your co-workers?
I appreciate everyone at Franklin Elementary and thank you for welcoming me to the team.
PAEF WECKLER REIMBURSEMENT GRANTS DUE NEXT SUNDAY!
The Port Angeles Education Foundation (PAEF) will award a total of $4,000 to Port Angeles School District educators as reimbursement for classroom items purchased using personal funds. Awards are limited to $250 per person.
A Google application will be available from February 1 through March 31, 2024. Receipts for purchased items must be included with the application. Receipts may be dated from September 1, 2023, to the date of application. http://tinyurl.com/PAEF-reimbursement2024
Reimbursements are for basic classroom materials that are depleted during the school year. Items that last more than one school year will also be considered, but permanent items are not likely to be reimbursed.
Applicants will be notified after April 17 whether or not they will receive reimbursement. Successful applicants will receive checks by the end of April.
PAEF and the Welcker family appreciate your extra efforts to ensure students have basic materials for education and fun in the classroom.

PAHS HOSA STUDENTS EXCEL AT STATE CONFERENCE
What an incredible journey at the HOSA conference in Spokane! PAHS students truly excelled in every competition, showcasing their skills and passion. A big round of applause to Finn Thompson for securing the 5th spot in Sports Medicine! Harper and Yau impressed with a remarkable 6th place in EMT, while Amelia's stellar performance earned her the 9th spot in Sports Medicine. PAHS, your dedication and perseverance continue to inspire us all. Let's keep striving for excellence! 🏆👏
PAPER SHREDDING FUNDRAISER EVENT -- APRIL 13
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!
Join us for a paper shredding event on Saturday, April 13th, 2024, from 10 AM – 1 PM at Steve Methner’s State Farm, 611 E. Front Street.
Bring your paper to shred and make a donation. Proceeds from this event will help fund our Back to School Fair held in August, where children in need receive supplies for the 2024-25 school year.
Thanks to our community for supporting this event year after year!
DRY CREEK PARENT MENTORS INTERVIEWED ON KONP
Jarom Packer, Dry Creek Elementary teacher and administrator intern, discussed the new WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) program on the KONP Todd Ortloff show this week. Jarom was joined by Matt Harris and Angel Torres, members of the WATCH D.O.G.S., to talk about the new adult male mentor program. Way to go Jarom!
MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS MAKE STEVENS HONOR ROLL!!!!
Stevens Middle School proudly celebrated over 100 exceptional students who made it onto the Honor Roll last semester! Families and students enjoyed breakfast while they celebrated their students dedication and hard work. From mastering challenging concepts to demonstrating grit in the face of obstacles, these students exemplify the values that Stevens Middle School holds dear.
