Dear Kindergarten Parents,

Your child has reached an important milestone! McGowen Elementary is excited to welcome you and your child to kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. We are looking forward to a positive home & school partnership to ensure that kindergarten is a successful experience for not only your kindergarten child, but for your whole family. Our kindergarten is a full day program from 8:00 AM to 3:07 PM.

Our academic program is child-centered. Through a Balanced Literacy approach that integrates curriculum, students are involved in learning experiences to meet individual needs. Kindergarten is the foundation for future learning. Some of those skills include:

• Literacy (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

• Math (concepts and number sense)

• Science

• Social Studies

• Collaborative and cooperative learning

• Responsible and independent work habits

• Critical thinking strategies

Transitioning into kindergarten is different for every child. It will be important for you to guide your child to find his/her way to independence. Your child will have opportunities to develop strong relationships. It is our goal that each class develops a community centered on positive relationships with peers and the teacher. Our kindergarten program is geared towards developing the whole child, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically.

The McGowen Kindergarten Team is excited to see you at Kinder Round Up on May 9th from 9:00-10:00 am in the McGowen library. This will give your child an opportunity to experience what it feels like to be in a kindergarten classroom and hear all about what your child will experience and learn in kindergarten.

Prior to the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, students will have the opportunity to meet their teacher and tour their classroom. This Meet the Teacher event will be held on August 7, 2023. You can choose to order your child pre-ordered school supplies that are delivered to the classroom on meet the teacher night or purchase your own supplies. Registration is now open for NEW students to MISD for the 2023-2024 school year. Information for returning students will go out at a later date. Our campus will be open April 11th-June 1st between 8:30-2:30 for supporting the registration process. Summer registration for new students will not begin until July 19th, so please try to register early to ensure your child’s placement on your zoned campus.

I will be at McGowen on Back to School Night. Please take this opportunity to bring your child’s completed medical forms including:

· Life Threatening Allergy Plans & medications

· Asthma Action Plans & medications

· Seizure Action Plans & medications

· Emergency Action Plans & medications

· Daily Medication Forms & medications

· Updated immunization records

Please remember the prescription medications must be in it’s prescription labeled box. The prescription label must be current and unexpired.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would make arrangements to bring the completed forms and medications on Back to School Night. This will give me time to review the plan with your child’s teacher prior to the first day of school.

**It is highly recommended students in Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade bring a bag with extra clothes to change if needed for accidents of any kind including spilling their milk, restroom accidents, or slip and trip in the mud. If your child has a grab bag they will be able to change and immediately return to class with minimal loss of classroom instruction. If you child does not have extra clothes, a school employee will contact you to bring clothing to school.
