UND NSPA Monthly Communiqué
March 2022 Issue 17
Finding Comfort
March promises to come in like a lion and leave like a lamb. Sadly, I think this forecast refers to more than weather as we look at the turbulent events overseas. A pall of fear has been cast over Ukraine. How does one find solace in a time of war? I offer no easy answers, but seeing the students I serve dedicate themselves to a path of kindness, cooperation, and service gives me hope.
I'd like to congratulate Madelyn House for becoming a finalist for the Truman Scholarship - the nation’s premier graduate fellowship for students interested in public service. Thank you for all you have done for UND and representing us in the Truman competition.
Madelyn joins the other UND students hoping to make our world a better place. Our 2021 Boren Scholar will finally arrive in Taiwan the end of this month. UND students are still in the running for Fulbright ETA and CBYX Young Professionals competitions that would allow them to serve as cultural ambassadors in the Czech Republic and Germany. We also have students entering the UK Fulbright Summer Institute and Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship competitions to forge cross cultural connections to the people in Scotland and Ireland this summer, respectively. Another applied to study in Washington, DC through the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program to learn about a career in international diplomacy. Finally, a student who was just recalled to active duty by the Air Force found a way to complete her application for the Pat Tillman Scholarship that recognizes military leadership. What a comforting experience working with these dedicated students who model the best of our nature.

Sydney Menne, 2022 Brooke Owens Fellow, Interivews with Prairie Public
Monday, February 14, 2022 - Sydney Menne talked with Ashley Thornberg, host of Main Street on Prairie Public, about the Brooke Owens Award. Ashley observed how Sydney continues to undertake many non-academic activities while she pursues her intellectual and professional interests. Sydney, who presides over the UND Nordic Ski Club and volunteers at Stable Days Youth Ranch, responded, "It is hard to balance everything sometimes, but I do believe it is important to have balance in some hobby you can do in your own time…a break…something fun to getting you back to who you are.” These are such important words that remind us that in pursuit of high achievement, we are more than our achievements or what we do. Achievement should not be divorced from the person who orchestrates it. I hope you take a few minutes to hear Sydney’s interview.
