We would like to inform you that the school schedule for the week of October 21, 2024 has been changed. All days that week, including Wednesday, October 23, will be modified student days.
The non-student day will be moved to Friday, October 18, 2024 to improve consistency across all elementary schools and streamline our report card process. Again, Friday the 18th of October will be a day off of school for students.
We understand that this schedule change may disrupt your plans, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your cooperation, understanding, and flexibility as we adjust our calendar.
This Week at Adams Elementary
Pyramid of Success
Coach Wooden believed and taught that the most important responsibility each of us had to ourselves was to do everything we could to achieve our own potential. He offered his Pyramid of Success and his definition of Success as a guide, stepping stones to help young people understand what it really takes to make the effort – 100% – to fulfill their potential and do their best. Every couple of weeks, our students will focus on one or two character traits from Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Positive examples of students exemplifying the character traits will be recognized with the Pyramid of Success Awards. Classroom lessons will reinforce elements of the Pyramid of Success. Additionally, whole school assemblies will feature character traits from Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.
For the next three weeks, we will be focusing on Friendship and Loyalty:
FRIENDSHIP -"To make friends, be a friend"
To make a friend you must be a friend. Friends are your family, teammates, classmates and workmates. They help you succeed and achieve your goals. Friendship is mutual. It is not a one way street. Good friends do good things for each other.
LOYALTY - "Be trustworthy"
Strive to be reliable and dependable. Keep your word by doing what you say you will do. When you have Loyalty others will be loyal to you! It means giving respect to those you work with. Respect help produce Loyalty.

Please check out the photos of our students enjoying the STEM program! Their excitement and enthusiasm for learning are truly inspiring. Stay tuned for more updates and celebrations in the coming months!
Congratulations to both 5th grade classes with the best attendance for last week, 98.8%. Did you know that research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. This year’s attendance goal for Adams Elementary is 95.5% average daily attendance. Last year our attendance rate was 94.5% . In order to meet our school goals, we must see an increase in student attendance for the 24-25 school year.
📚 Monthly Student Book Reviews! 📚
Starting this month, we’re featuring Student Book Reviews in our newsletter on the last Friday of each month! A big thank you to our librarian, M Tyaransen, for inspiring a love of reading. Encourage your student to dive into a book and join the fun! Happy reading!
STUDENT/AGE: Ethan Arevalo, age 10
TEACHER/GRADE: Rossmann/6th
FAVORITE BOOK: Chasing the Falconers, Book 1 of the On the Run series by Gordon Korman
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS BOOK TO OTHER KIDS?
It’s an adventure story for older kids. It’s also a mystery with lots of twists. I think it’s important to read the whole series from the beginning to really understand the story.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART?
The chase when the grandfather came after the kids. They ran in the middle of the night (On the Run) and luckily got away.
WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER/WHY?
Aiden was my favorite character because he was persistent and had great ideas to get out of tough situations. I could see myself in him.
WOULD YOU HAVE ENDED THE BOOK DIFFERENTLY?
It has a great ending. I don’t want to give it away but there’s a big twist at the end. It surprised me in a really good way!
Thinking Maps💭
This week, our teachers will focus on rolling out the next Thinking Map, the Multi-Flow Map. The Multi-Flow Map is used for identifying the causes and effects of an event. In the center box is an event on the left side are causes and on the right side effects. Please see the attached information for uses of the multi-flow map.

Volunteer Information
We are happy to welcome volunteers to our campus. Volunteering is a perfect opportunity to become more familiar with our school and support your child’s teacher.
Adams volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application through the NMUSD website and check in at the office each time through our Raptor System. Please see the link: NMUSD Volunteers. Once your application is approved, you will receive a notification. All cleared volunteers will then complete an orientation at Adams.
Please note that field trip volunteers need to go through the volunteer/visitor system before attending a field trip.
Neighborhood Peer Program
Newport-Mesa Unified School District is looking for preschool-aged children to participate in our Neighborhood Peer Program.
The program prepares young learners for success in kindergarten, as they participate in small and large group classroom settings, and cooperative play activities.
For more information call: (949) 889-3669, or email: npp@nmusd.us
Attendance
Attendance is very important to a child’s success in school. Students are expected to be here each day on time and ready to learn. However, we understand that there are occasions where an absence may occur. Please be sure to contact the absence hotline to report all absences at 714-424-4702.
Did you know? Research shows that chronically absent students (students with 10% absences over the school year = 18 absences) are less likely to read on grade level by 3rd grade, are more likely to score lower on standardized tests, get suspended in middle school, and are at least four times more likely to not complete high school.
Attendance Matters!!!
Safety Protocols
All teachers and Adams staff have been trained on the Standard Response Protocol. This protocol allows everyone on site to use clear and common language during emergency responses. Whenever emergency drills are held at Adams Elementary (dates are all posted on the Adams Elementary website), we will inform our parent community through our weekly newsletter.
