🗣 News Around the Classrooms✍🏽
Pre-School: This week in preschool we learned about The Three Sisters, a Native American legend about how corn, beans, and squash help each other grow. Projects included painting beans, corn, and squash. We also reviewed letters p, b, t, d, f, and v. We ended the week with Square Show and Tell.
Kindergarten: In kindergarten, our Wonders program was a review week. We reviewed Unit 2 HFWs, letters/sounds, segmenting/blending phonemes and left/to right and top/bottom progression. As a new skill, we learned about the long Aa sound. In math we worked on two-dimensional (Flat) shapes. We read a variety of Thanksgiving books that focused on being thankful. We completed activities that highlighted our thoughts and ideas of what each of us is thankful for.
Grade 1: This week in first grade we reviewed words with short -u and contraction words. For comprehension we focused on plots of stories and confirming predictions. In writing, we are working on responding to a text and writing complete sentences. This week we read about building and different materials used to make things with. For math we worked on using the strategies we’ve learned to solve problems to 20. For social studies we are learning about Thanksgiving and gratitude.
Grade 2: In second grade, students are practicing adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers using a variety of strategies. In reading, we are reading texts to answer the essential question “What can animals in stories teach us?” In phonics, we are spelling and reading words with digraphs and trigraphs. In social studies we are investigating why people migrate to different places around the world. In writing students are continuing to draft their animal research projects.
Grade 3: This week in third grade, students worked on addition and subtraction with regrouping. In reading and writing, students read an MCAS practice passage about Claude Monet. They used the RACES format to help organize information to type an essay style response to a question. In our Wonders reading, we read a variety of stories focused on the essential question: Why do people immigrate to new places? In social studies, students created placemats to use during their upcoming Thanksgiving Feast!
Art: Grade 3 finished their symmetrical creatures and enjoyed taking turns using this reflectional symmetry game on the Promethean board. Grade 2 completed their Mexican mirrors and filled a brand new portfolio with completed work. They also really enjoyed using the Promethean board to make digital art with radial symmetry using this fun game. Kindergartners found and colored geometric shapes within the lines they stamped last week.
Physical Education: This week all students had a final cup stacking day. There were stations for jumbo, mini and metal cups, timers, relay races, sit-ups and push-up stacking, and regular cup stacking. The students also watched a video of a world championship cup stacking event.
Music: This week, students K-3 have started the 3rd week of their unit on improvising. Grade 3 will be improvising movements in Mama Lama, Grade 2 will explore improvising using mallet instruments. Grade 1 and Kindergarten will continue to improvise with arioso type songs. Kindergarten will be working on their instrument as an introduction to playing percussion instruments and reading music.
Library: During library class this week, students are working on a Thanksgiving themed project. We listened to the read-aloud "Balloons Over Broadway" by Melissa Sweet and then created our own balloon designs. Next week we will use green screen boxes and the DoInk app on the ipads to take pictures of the balloons and put them in a Thanksgiving parade. The DoInk app allows students to choose a background so it looks like their balloon is in a parade.
