7th Grade Healthy Decision Making

May 1, 2024
Dear families:
The 7th grade Healthy Decision Making unit will be taught beginning May 8, 2024 and ending about May 23, 2024. This unit is a continuation of the 5th grade Growing & Changing unit but with a greater emphasis on how to make responsible and healthy decisions. Students will learn a decision making process that can apply to situations related to alcohol, tobacco, other substances, and sexual decision making.
This unit will consist of the following topics:
Puberty
Gender & Sexual Identity
Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships
Internal & External Influences that can impact decision making
Consent & Communication
Understanding sexually transmitted infections and transmission
Pregnancy and Prevention (Birth Control Methods)
Substance Misuse
In order to uphold our Jeffco values and to be in compliance with Colorado state law, the unit will emphasize:
Inclusivity of all students
Positive youth development
Medical & scientific accuracy of information
Because we value the family and school partnership, occasionally your student may come home with “family homework”. These assignments are completely optional but may help you to have conversations with your student about your own family values and beliefs around these sensitive topics. Also, all values-based questions that are asked by students will not be answered but we will encourage students to ask their families about the questions not answered during class.
If for any reason you are uncomfortable with your student participating in this unit or you have additional questions, please email us at: Jessica.Mitchell@jeffco.k12.co.us or Michele.Harris@jeffco.k12.co.us
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Jessica Mitchell and Michele Harris

6th Grade Important Messages
Dear Everitt families,
I have been doing some digging into littering and I found out some pretty provocative information on littering. If you have aluminum in your household, do you think it's safe to use? Sorry to break it to you, it's not invulnerable to use. If you put it over your food, it's not healthy for you or your pet. Your body can fight off the little pieces of aluminum that fall in your food dogs can't. Aluminum can kill your dog. Aluminum is one of the most "green" metals available. Recycling aluminum takes only 5 percent of the energy needed to extract new aluminum from ore. A roof made of aluminum can reflect up to 95 percent of the solar energy it takes in, which makes a building much more energy efficient. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable. Even though aluminum is infinitely recyclable, It's not easy to decompose. Aluminum foil takes about 80 to 400 years to decompose. Instead, you can use recyclable containers for your food instead of aluminum foil. Recyclable containers are way safer and healthier for the environment because it eliminates hundreds and millions of plastic packaging from going into the landfill. Every year 19 to 23 million of plastic waste leaks into aquatic ecosystems, polluting lakes, rivers and seas. This is really bad for the environment. If we don't change now, then what will our world become in the future?
Sincerely,
Lemontia and Trayvon
Dear Everitt Parents Of The 6th Grade,
Hello Everitt Families. Our names are Ava and Harper and we are about to inform you about paper waste. Paper waste is a really big problem in our school. We did a survey on the 6th grade and the results were saying that 67.7% of the 6th graders said that they saw paper scraps around the school. Also, 22.6% of the students said that they didn't have a recycling bin at home for used paper. Also, 54.8% of the 6th grade said that they threw away lots of paper a day. We also interviewed the janitor ( Mr. Anthony) and he said that he sees kids all the time throwing away paper and crumbling it up and throwing it on the ground. Also, Mr. Anthony told us that after school he goes around and picks up all the paper scraps and puts them in the recycling bin. So Everitt families, we are asking you to please inform your kids to recycle and save the trees. Thank you!

Livia is COMMITTED to using as much Spanish as possible during class. She is a wonderful of "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!"
Madelyn R. - I am such a cluttered person and Madelyn is such a help and asks to help me organize in my room every Thursday during study hall. Madelyn is a student in Tech Ed where she is accurate and precise. Her pen project is perfect example of how high of a standard to which she holds herself.
Christopher J. - Chris earned a 26% increase this week on Geometry and a total of 90% increase on Geometry in the month of April. Chris has been doing outstanding work in our thinking classroom this month. Thinking classroom is clearly how he learns best. Keep up the excellent work, Chris!

Arianna G. - At the start of semester, Arianna was quick to tell me she had no ideas, had no skills, didn't know how to be creative...But now I see Arianna taking risks, putting in more effort, challenging herself to keep going even if the project is not perfect or needs more work. She is confident about making her ideas come to life and willing to make changes to improve her work.
