Superintendent's Message
Dear Oberlin School Families,
January is “School Board Recognition Month,” and I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Board of Education - President Ms. Farah Emeka; Vice President Ms. Jo-Anne Steggall; and members, Ms. Rosa Gadsden, Ms. Janet Garrett and Dr. Ken Stanley. We are thankful for their unwavering support, dedication, and commitment to the success of our students and school community. Your leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and collaborative spirit have been instrumental in shaping the direction of our District.
Here are a few items of note:
Lorain County Fair Survey
We are conducting a survey to learn how many of our Oberlin City Schools families attend the annual Lorain County Fair in August. Your feedback will help us for future District planning. This survey will only take a few minutes to complete. Please complete the survey HERE by Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. Thank you for your participation!
Winter Weather Policy
The District monitors the weather locally, regionally, and nationally. We monitor the weather for climate patterns, precipitation, and wind chill.
The Superintendent or an administrator will drive our District roads as early as 3 a.m. if necessary. This allows us first-hand experience of road conditions specific to Oberlin. One-third of our students ride the school bus each day and many students walk to school, so severe weather and road conditions impact school safety.
The District maintains close communication with all county and local Superintendents. We provide each other with information regarding additional weather conditions influencing our bordering school lines.
The District will utilize the following media sources to notify our school community of a closing or delay:

Oberlin Elementary School
America Recycles Day
Before Winter Recess, the Lorain County Ohio State University Extension Office hosted a fun and educational event at New Russia Township in celebration of America Recycles Day. OES fifth grade students were invited to attend the event as part of their STEAM work with Mrs. Brandi Hicks-Watson and their classroom teachers. The purpose of this event was to engage students in learning about recycling, composting, conservation, and pollution control!
Learning about Seeds
To conclude their unit on plant life, enthusiastic kindergarteners at OES embarked on a hands-on learning experience by planting lima bean seeds. Through lively class discussions, students explored the essential elements plants require for growth and survival. Each student will meticulously document their plant's journey with detailed observations recorded in a personal plant journal.
Guest Readers for Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, we are inviting parents to be guest readers in our classrooms! We have curated a wonderful collection of diverse books that celebrate Black history and culture, and we would love for you to share these stories with our students. To make this experience accessible for all, we encourage you to record yourself reading a book of your choice. These recordings can then be shared with multiple classrooms. If you prefer to read aloud to a class in person, please contact OES Principal Mrs. Felicia Webber at fwebber@oberlinschools.net to schedule a visit. We appreciate your support in enriching our students' learning experiences during this important month!
Power of the Pen
Congratulations to Langton’s Power of the Pen team for showcasing your creativity and competing at the district tournament!
A special shoutout to Christina Fridenstine for placing in the top ten of all 8th grade students!

OHS Portraits
OHS Drawing and Painting students have been hard at work creating portraits for Black History Month in collaboration with the City of Oberlin and The FAVA Gallery! Here is a sneak peak of a portrait of Diana Ross - how amazing!
Soup & Socks Collection
The Oberlin High School Interact Club teamed up with the Oberlin Elementary School Student Council for the annual holiday Soup and Socks Collection. This is an effort started a few years ago by Oberlin Rotary Club. All cans of soup and socks of any size were donated to Oberlin Community Services.
Interact Club Advisor, Mrs. Sarah Colson, said this opportunity to think about others sends a great message in this season of giving.
“It is wonderful to see the schools join together with the community during the holidays,” she said. “The Oberlin Rotary Club is a wonderful partner for the schools, including the BackPack Program and STRIVE.”
Fifth grade teachers and OES Student Council co-advisor Miss Sarah Parsh and Miss Nina Ruiz shared the following statement: “OES Student Council loves collaborating with OHS students on this project as it teaches the youngest among us that it is never too early to start giving back to our community. It's heartwarming to see these young leaders working together to make a real difference in the lives of others.”

Talking Finances w/ Treasurer Mr. Robert Rinehart
The Oberlin City School District is looking at selling bonds in late February 2025 to fund the new middle school. The Financial Audit for the 2023-2024 school year has been submitted and pending approval from the State.
Our next Board of Education meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025 inside Oberlin Elementary School's cafeteria.

Oberlin City Schools’ new 6-8 middle school is entering the “Schematic Design Phase.” This phase, based on input from the District, staff, and construction experts, includes an initial layout of the building, showing its size, interior spaces, and exterior ideas. These designs will help Hammond Construction estimate project costs and ensure the budget aligns with the project scope. Currently, no final blueprint has been completed.
The District is also focused on creating an optimal learning environment, with features like science labs planned for the new school. Some of the furniture from the current middle school will be reused in the new building. Additionally, a review is underway in the library/media center to identify items that can be transferred to the new school. And, the District’s Food Services Director Mr. Matt Phillips is collaborating with the team to ensure the right kitchen equipment is installed.
The District is excited about the progress and looks forward to sharing more updates as the project continues.
