Mr. Jackson
Most people I have ever met want the absolute best for their children. They want the to have the best of everything from job, to house, to sense of style. So how do we equip our kiddos to go out and achieve those things? Well, I am confident in saying that reading is possibly THE KEY element in creating a life-long learner, and in that giving maximum opportunity for them to acquire the knowledge and education necessary for all the best.
Check out this article for some great suggestions on how to engage and equip your kiddos.
As we said a couple weeks ago, there is never a reason to not achieve our maximum potential.
Feel free to contact me at jjackson@fulton58.org with any questions or concerns.

Art News
I just wanted to start the 2016-17 school year off by extending a warm welcome to all the six graders coming in, and to all returning seventh and 8th grade students, welcome back!
I am looking forward to a fun and exciting new year at here at FMS! Many of my returning students noticed a lot of changes in the Art room this year. We will work together to make sure we stay organized and that each one of us is doing our part to keep the Art room a clean and safe place to create.
Six graders in the coming weeks will be working on classroom procedures as well as jumping right in to our first unit on “What is Art?”. From there we will explore line and all the many possibilities a simple line can create.
Seventh Graders will cover new procedures in the classroom, and will move into the “Art About Me” unit, which will have several correlating projects. Seventh grade will have two individualized projects this year. Your students may need to gather materials from time to time, from home depending on their individualized proposals. This is a great opportunity about mid year for students to step outside the box and tap in to their individualism and talents. I will go more into this as the year progresses.
Eighth Grade will also learn new procedures as well as the new operations of class, and will start in with several mini projects to get them warmed up. We will examine the Principles and Elements throughout the first semester as we build our skills in drawing, and design. We will really be focused on drawing and work our way towards some three dimensional projects. As always, we will try new things and achieve new techniques, and use each project as a building block to our altered book project the last six weeks of the year. The eighth grade last year did a fantastic job, and I am really looking forward to what this year will bring.
In Win class this year we will explore creative ways that we can celebrate all things here at FMS. From time to time we will be working with ideas and how to incorporate Art in to our PBIS goals and agenda, and help out with thematic happenings around school. We will make posters and get into the school spirit with our creations a little more as well as dabbling in other fun activities to broaden our Art Knowledge and journey to think like Artists.
Looking forward to working with all my students this year, and as always if you need anything, or have any questions feel free to email me!
Artfully Yours!
Mr Chapman

HORNET SINGERS:
Hornet Singers have great things ahead of them this year...though they be but few, they be mighty! I'm excited to get to know each of these students and their voices better this year as we navigate the world of choral singing. We've been busy building our sight-reading skills and have started applying these to The Star-Spangled Banner" in a major key as we know it; however, we enjoyed listening to a "minor key version" of this selection and noticing the differences in mood and tonality.
Choir handbooks with choir contracts have been sent home with students as well as emailed home to parents. ALL choir contracts have been completed and turned in...yay! The handbook and schedule will also be online for your perusal anytime. (www.fulton58.org)
HARMONY HORNETS:
We had a great first rehearsal last Tuesday and we are SO EXCITED to meet once again this Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
Hornet Pride Choir is off to a great start! Our daily warm-up includes rhythm practice through writing AND performing basic rhythms and solfege. Students have received a couple of pieces of music that will be part of our performances for the first portion of the year.
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
6th grade Arts Alive students should have completed their listening for our music review project. We have been using class time to complete the listening at school, so no one needs to worry about doing that at home. Students have been taking notes as they listen to their songs. This will be helpful as we write our first draft this week.
Our rhythm focus for this week will be a continuation of our CUPS study. We are observing and practicing using everyday/household objects as musical instruments!
Foreign Cultures
We have begun our study of cultures in Latin America! This week we will begin with look at Brazil. Students will have the opportunity to choose a country in Latin America, and to independently research cultural components of their selected country. They will ALSO get to choose how they want to share their research. This week we will look at several options students have for showing what the know!
We will also create our interview question list for our guest speaker, Jo Incicco Frame. Jo and I will complete a video chat interview, and the class will watch it. Jo is from South America, but currently lives in Australia. Due to the time difference, video recorded interview is the best way for us to go. We will have the opportunity to ask follow up questions.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR FOREIGN CULTURES CLASSES! I would love to welcome guests who would like to speak to our classes about their cultural perspectives and experiences. I am especially looking for people who are from, or have spent time in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Please contact me if you are interested in sharing with our class!
Careers
Career Exploration class has wrapped up our discussion of networking. We are beginning our self-guided research this week. Student will have the chance to start researching career fields that they are interested in.
Pleas ask your student about the way they are going to choose to "show what they know". Students have received the guidelines for their capstone project. They get to choose from a variety of ways to share what they are learning!
Call for volunteers! As part of our Careers class, I am looking for guests to come speak to the class. If you are interested in coming to talk to us about your job, please let me know. We would LOVE to have you. My intention is to spotlight the 4-5 areas of career interest that our class chooses. We can certainly benefit from learning from YOU!

Focus for September: Goal Setting
Research shows that students who have the ability to set and achieve realistic goals leads to higher grades and greater well-being in adulthood. How can we help our children through the process of setting and achieving their goals? Below are some researched strategies to help us on this journey.
1. Discuss with your child the difference between long term (greater than 2 weeks approximately) and short term goals (less than 2 weeks).
2. Goals can be personal such as learning an a new song on the piano or completing a task on a sports team. Goals can also be academic. For example, raising a grade in Math or getting an A on the next Science test.
3. To create a "smart" goal follow the SMART Goal format:
Specific: What would your child like to accomplish?
Measurable: How will your child know when the goal has been achieved?
Achievable: Has your child considered whether the goal is realistic?
Relevant: Why is the goal significant to your child?
Timely: When will your child achieve this goal?
4. Above all else, be a good listener as you talk with your child about his or her dreams, what achievement will look like, what steps to take, and what support or resources your child will need along the way.
5. Lastly, even though achieving a goal can be its own reward, consider ways to celebrate your child's success after a specific goal is met.
