News from the School Leader:
Spanish Educators Program - The "Spanish for Educators" program is now accepting applications for the fall semester! This program equips RPS staff with essential Spanish language skills, focusing on practical communication and cultural competence to better engage multilingual students and families. Spaces are limited, so interested staff members are encouraged to apply early. The program is open to all RPS staff, with experience levels ranging from novice beginner to intermediate, and the deadline to apply is October 1. Principals and leaders are asked to share this opportunity with their teams to ensure broad participation. (Please see Ms. Stewart if interested)
Lunch Periods for Licensed Personnel - The Employee and Labor Relations Department has received numerous inquiries about whether staff are permitted to leave the premises during their lunch period. It should be communicated that: All staff in the licensed personnel unit are contracted, and compensated during their lunch period. Therefore, leaving the premises during this time is not permitted.
NO to Group Punishment!
Faculty and Staff, it has come to The Administration's attention that Group Punishment has been occurring at J.L. Francis Elementary School.
Please read a portion of an email received from a parent: "I know my kids are not angels/perfect, nobody is, but they really do strive to be on their best behavior, and encourage other kids to do the same. It definitely does not seem fair that the kids who are not participating in disruptive behavior have to have silent lunch, walk laps, get recess/free time taken away, write sentences about not talking, etc. Due to the actions of a few. I think the school does an awesome job addressing bad behavior, encouraging good behavior, but the group punishment at times could be an issue for the kids who are behaving. I just wanted to write those concerns to you and this questions was shared: What’s the point in being good if you get punished for it?
Faculty and staff, collective punishment goes against the idea of individual responsibility and we ask that you please adhere to the notion that research suggests that collective punishment is unlikely to improve behavior and can actually make it worse. It can also lead to negative peer pressure, which can increase social exclusion and disengagement. Additionally, please remember that RPS is striving to instill student ownership in all aspects of their learning.
