Dear Parents
This will be the final full newsletter for the 2024 school year.
The last few weeks have been very busy as we finalise this year and move towards 2025.
Last week we welcomed all the Year 6 students from Jurien Bay, Cervantes, Badgingarra and Leeman to high school for two days of orientation and transition. We will have about 35 students in Year 7 next year, who will be split into two class groups. The students experienced both regular classes and elective classes to better understand the format of a high school.
At the other end today, we hosted our parent meeting for the new students commencing Kindy in 2025. This is an exciting time as the group commences their 14-year journey through school. The meeting was a chance to meet staff, learn a little about the program and ask any questions.
Congratulations to Mr Culverwell and the students in both the Choir and School Band, for their wonderful performances at the Turquoise Coast Festival. The students were very professional, entertaining and talented, a real credit to the music program at the school.
We have had some positive support and update on the proposed crosswalk at Bashford Street. All being well, the roadwork and signage will all be completed by the start of the 2025 school year with a crossing guard employed by WA Police to manage movement in the morning and afternoon.
On Thursday 5 December, Semester Two reports will be emailed home for all students. The secondary reports will be the same format as Semester One, but the primary reports will have grades and attitude, behaviour and effort for all areas and one general comment. We send the reports home in Week Nine so that parents have a chance to meet with teachers before the end of the school year allowing for a fresh start in 2025. The meeting if held, may also give ideas on areas where children may spend a little of the holidays doing some extra learning.
The end of year Awards and Presentation Night will be held on Monday 9 December. This will see performances from all primary classes, some secondary groups, and awards presented for Pre-primary to Year 11. The Year 12 awards were presented at the end of Term 3.
At the end of each year, we farewell some staff; Mr Logue, Secondary Science and Technology, Ms Grey, Year 6 and Ms Chalada, Secondary PE and Health. We genuinely thank them for their contribution to our school and wish them well for the future.
I would like to also take this opportunity to thank the School Board and the P&C for their positive ongoing support this year, you really do make a difference. To the many parents who have helped with excursions, in classrooms, sport, swimming, camp fundraising and all the wonderful events around the school, thanks to you also. All the data does show that if you show interest and support your children at school, they too will better value the experience and produce better and happier results.
Take care and enjoy the final weeks of school this year.

Principal
Attendance Report
Attendance data for the past two weeks. Attendance target for all students is 90%.
Year 11 General Food Studies
Students ended the year with a "Big Bake Off". They had to design a drip cake which included baking a cake of their choice, producing buttercream, icing their cakes as well as piping a design and decorating to match their design brief.
All students should be very proud of their finished product.

STUDENT WELLBEING OFFICER
Dannee Holland
I'm Miss Holland, the new Student Wellbeing Officer here at JBDHS. I grew up in Jurien Bay and attended JBDHS from Kindy right through year 12. I have since moved away to Perth to study my Bachelor Degree in Counselling and Youth Work. I will be here at the school two days a week whilst I continue my studies. I have a strong passion for working with youth and fostering a safe environment for students to come for support through any new or challenging situations. I'm so excited to start getting to know all of the students here at JBDHS and make positive impacts wherever I can.
SOLAR CAR AND EV CHALLENGES
Local School Shines at Solar Car and EV Challenges
In an impressive showcase of engineering and resilience, students from our local school recently competed in two major STEM events: the AGL Solar Car Challenge and the Perth EV Challenge. The teams demonstrated skill, innovation, and determination as they tackled challenges, achieved top positions, and earned recognition for their hard work.
Solar Car Challenge: Best Engineered Car Award
At the AGL Solar Car Challenge, our team entered four vehicles, winning the prestigious Best Engineered Car award for one of them. The team’s design, which was the first to feature vacuum-moulded shells and multiple motors, impressed the judges with its ingenuity and sophistication. Despite some reliability issues that prevented the vehicles from reaching the finals, the team still managed to win several scratch races, a testament to their dedication and the cars’ advanced designs.
EV Challenge: Competitive Performances and a 3rd Place Finish
The team’s success continued at the Perth EV Challenge, where students participated in both the Junior and Senior events with remarkable performances.
Junior Event:
In the Junior race, our team showed impressive speed, competing consistently in the midfield. One vehicle was lapping as high as 4th place before ultimately finishing 7th. However, an electrical short in the team’s second junior vehicle caused a 10-minute delay right at the start, making it impossible to catch back up to the field. Despite the setback, the team’s strong performance highlighted their competitive spirit and potential.
Senior Event
The Senior race saw even more excitement, as the team faced a chaotic start that pushed them down to 11th position. Undeterred, they worked steadily through the field, reaching 3rd place by lap 18. A rollover incident three laps later temporarily halted the race, giving the team a chance to assess and adjust their vehicle for the final push. With 12 minutes remaining, they were back on track, racing for position alongside top contenders. As their power reserves dwindled, they focused on maintaining their standing and ultimately finished with an impressive 3rd place in a thrilling finale.
Acknowledging Community Support
These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous support from local businesses who provided essential parts, often at short notice. A special thank you goes to Bayside Auto Parts, Lowman Engineering, Mitre 10, and Thrifty Hardware for their generous support and timely assistance.
Additionally, we extend our gratitude to Mitsui E&P and the Federal Government Science and Engineering Competition Sponsorship Grant, whose funding made it possible for our team to participate in these events. Their support covered crucial expenses, enabling students to focus on developing their skills and creating innovative designs.
Pushing the Limits of Innovation and Teamwork
These events showcased not only the students’ engineering abilities but also their tenacity and strategic thinking under pressure. The team’s success in pioneering innovative designs and competing against skilled opponents reflects their passion for STEM and commitment to excellence.
Congratulations to the students and staff involved in both events. The community eagerly anticipates their next engineering challenges and achievements
KNITTING CLUB
Sam Lyons, Year 6, has completed a beanie completely by himself. It's our first beanie at knitting club. Well done, Sam!
International Seniors Day
On Tuesday 12 November, we were lucky enough to have some special visitors join the students in the knitting and crochet club. They came for International Seniors Day and the students, along with some teachers knitted and crocheted squares for a new blanket for the library. They joined us for a cup of tea and some scones for morning tea. We all had a merry time with the seniors, and thanked them. We look forward to using our new rug in the school library.

P & C NEWS
From the President
In 2023, the P&C took over the ordering and supply of the new school uniforms at Jurien Bay DHS. A virtual ordering system was implemented, and a physical uniform shop was created. It is open every Wednesday morning, from 8.15am - 8.45am, for walk in try-ons and purchases. We now have a full stock of items for all seasons. If you would like to order new uniforms for 2025, please see our Facebook page, or click the 'Order Uniforms Here' button, below.
Our major fundraiser this year was the Bogan Bingo night in October. Thank you to everyone who got their best bogan on, and bought tickets. It was a great night with lots of fun games, and alter ego's coming out to play. A very special thank you to all businesses, both local and Perth based, who donated prizes for the night. Your generosity and support of the P&C, and the students at Jurien Bay District High School, is greatly appreciated by everyone involved. Finally, a very special mention to Mandy Passamani and her "bogan" committee for making the night such a huge success.
I would like to thank the current committee for their hard work and dedication this year, and I look forward to seeing our P&C continue to grow in 2025 at our AGM on Tuesday 18th February.
On behalf of the 2024 P&C committee, I would like to wish everyone a good end of Term 4 and a happy and safe holiday.
Nikki Hill
P&C President
PRINDY 2024
We have welcomed our pre-Kindergarten children to school this term with the start of Prindy.
So far, the children have been focusing on independence, routine, and getting to know staff and other children. They have completed different table-top activities and explored their environment. Miss H came for a visit to run a Fundamental Movement skills lesson. The children practised following instructions and moving like different animals.
CAREER EDUCATION
Recently, the Year 9 and 10 students have had the opportunity to visit local businesses as a part of the Career Education program.
Thank you to the Shire of Dandaragan, Jurien Skydive and Geraldton Fishing Cooperative for your valuable advice and time with the students.
A number of students have also been out and about on work experience over the year. Without the generosity and positive nature of the businesses in town, these opportunities wouldn't exist for our kids. Thank you!!

PBS
The school's reward system was developed by the PBS team in 2021, to ensure a consistent approach across the school. There are 2 types of rewards given to students; faction points for following any of the school values at any time, and there are fast and frequent rewards that are given out regularly for following the fortnight behaviour focus. All children should be receiving a minimum of 1 reward per day. At the end of each fortnight, there are 6 random winners drawn from the tickets by the faction captains. There is 1 primary and 1 secondary reward for each faction. Faction points are then tallied and the faction with the most points, flies their faction flag outside of the canteen for the next fortnight.
