Fall Parade & Classroom Parties October 31
Fall Parade
Weather permitting, we will have a short parade around the back black top starting at 2:00 pm. Families are welcome to come and watch the parade (See map below). Following the parade, only approved volunteers will be permitted into the building to assist with parties. If we have inclement weather, a cancellation notice will be communicated.
Fall Classroom Parties
Our PTA sponsored Fall Classroom parties will take place on Thursday, October 31 from 2:15-3:15 p.m. in classrooms. Please remember that volunteers that have signed up in advance (This is organized through PTA/head room parents). All volunteers must check in with the office, present a photo ID and receive a visitor's badge prior to entering classrooms.
Costumes
Students are able to dress up on this day. A great idea for a costume is to dress up as character from your favorite book. Please remember that costumes MUST be appropriate (NO spaghetti straps, NO bare midriffs, NO inappropriate icons or graphics). Students should wear their costumes, non-violent and simple in nature, to school as students will not be permitted to change into costumes. Look-a-like weapons (including, but not limited to, swords, guns, and knives) are NOT permitted. School appropriate masks will not be permitted to be worn throughout the school day, but may be worn during the party. NO INFLATABLE COSTUMES PERMITTED. This should be a positive experience by encouraging fun and originality.

3rd Grade Fall OST Testing Dates (October 22 & 23)
Third grade students will be taking the first offering of Ohio third grade ELA test this fall. This is their first opportunity to pass the test to avoid retention, per state law. There will be another opportunity in the spring, when students have been exposed to all third grade curriculum. We will also offer an additional opportunity, using an approved state test.
Promotion score of the grade 3 Ohio’s State Test in English Language Arts is 700 for the 2024-2025 school year. By law, any student who does not reach 700 this fall will be placed on a RIMP (Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan), if not already on one. This assures that your child receives the targeted interventions and instruction to have the most successful outcome on the spring state test.
While the retention component may be overridden by the parent and school, if a student does not reach a 700 in the spring on the state test and was on a RIMP, the RIMP will continue in fourth grade and beyond until a 700 is met.
SCS Annual Greet & Treat (October 28)
The Strongsville City Schools annual “Greet & Treat” event will be held at Strongsville High School’s Pat Catan Stadium on Monday, October 28 from 5:30pm - 7:00pm. Dress up in your best Halloween costume and collect candy and treats in an outdoor, family-friendly atmosphere. We will also be accepting donations of non-perishable items, especially cereal, canned fruits, canned vegetables, and Macaroni & Cheese, for the Strongsville Food Bank and other local food pantries that evening. We hope to see lots of families at this year’s “Greet & Treat” on October 28!
PTA Family Roller Skate Night (October 29)
A Message from our Literacy Coach!
When we are born our brain is wired for speaking, not reading, so we need to work really hard to train our brains! We use multiple parts of our brain to read.
One part processes the sounds of a word. Example - we hear the word “bat” and our brain thinks of the sounds /b/ /a/ /t/.
Another part of our brain holds the letter combinations from written language so the sounds can be matched to the correct letters. Example - /b//a//t/ = b-a-t
We use another part of our brain to gather meaning for the word. Example - when we hear the word “bat” we may think of baseball, the animal, or a movement.
Then we use context to support the meaning. Example - The boy grabbed the bat and walked to the plate. Now we know which “bat”!
Our brain gets quite the workout with reading!
