Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Welcome back!
Feeling the joy from the children at being back to school this week was incredible. Aside from a few tears shed by transitioning 1st graders there were smiles all around. Nerves, excitement and seeing old friends produced a lot of special magic!
As we transition the before and aftercare program from PEER to the YMCA (it will still be held on the Shaw campus) we will experience some growing pains as new folks bring a few new systems. Thank you in advance for your patience with us. Together, we will get it all smoothed out!
Shaw has always practiced “phone away for the day” when it comes to student cell phones. The systems in our upper elementary and middle school classrooms for students that carry phones are a morning check in system. Check in is an honor system. Should a student choose not check in their cell phone and are found using it during the instructional day, it will be confiscated and held in the office for parents/guardians to retrieve. We highly recommend that students not stow their cell phones in backpacks that are not secured. Phones and students are then reunited at the end of the day. It is the student’s responsibility to remember to pick up their phone at dismissal time.
In the unlikely event that you are planning on picking your student/s up early it must be prior to 3:10 on regular release days or 1:10 on early release days. Students will not be released after these times and will go through our typical end of day dismissal process. Should you have questions regarding this process, please see our front office staff.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
We’re back! It’s great to see everyone back on campus. It was a long and lonely summer here at Shaw. We have tons of great things planned for this year in the garden. We will host a couple parent workdays and a native planting day. The following dates are on the calendar:
· September 14th (native planting day)
· September 28th (parent workday)
· December 3rd & 5th (holiday concert afterparty)
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
You can access the volunteer signup site by clicking on this link: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
There is little to report this week. The garden is a jungle of watermelon vines, purslane, and basil. Our first lesson will be on purslane. We will be making a purslane and cucumber salad recipe from Chris Bianco. The first day of garden classes will be on 08/12. In the meantime, middle school is helping beautify the campus. They helped drag tree limbs onto the basketball court and they will begin their work in the garden furrows on Monday.
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, aluminum cans and MASON JARS. PLEASE, NO MORE EGGSHELLS. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials.

Enjoy your weekend!
Mr. Moench
Shaw PTA
As the new PTA President, I welcome you all back for another school year. I’m Lauren Marie Kutsko, and I’m excited to work with this wonderful community. This is my 11th year at the school. My oldest graduated last year and will be starting at North IB, and I have an 8th grader and a 6th grader this year.
If you are new to the community, welcome! Please don’t feel like you need to do everything this year. Settle in, look around, and make some friends. There will be plenty for you to do when you’re ready.
My email is president@shawmontessoripta.com. Reach out with any questions—no question is too small, and if I don’t know the answer, we’ll find out together.
For veteran families who haven’t found a way to participate or would like to explore more ways to support Shaw, let me know. I’d be glad to find something that suits your schedule and interests.
Looking forward to a great year together!
