George Washington Carver
How this scientist nurtured the land—and people’s minds
BY NICHOLAS ST. FLEUR
To George Washington Carver, peanuts were like paintbrushes: They were tools to express his imagination. Carver was a scientist and an inventor who found hundreds of uses for peanuts. He experimented with the legumes to make lotions, flour, soups, dyes, plastics, and gasoline—though not peanut butter!
Carver was born an enslaved person in the 1860s in Missouri. The exact date of his birth is unclear, but some historians believe it was around 1864, just before slavery was abolished in 1865. As a baby, George, his mother, and his sister were kidnapped from the man who enslaved them, Moses Carver. The kidnappers were slave raiders who planned to sell them. Moses Carver found George before he could be sold, but not his mother and sister. George never saw them again.
After slavery was abolished, George was raised by Moses Carver and his wife. He worked on their farm and in their garden, and became curious about plants, soils, and fertilizers. Neighbors called George “the plant doctor” because he knew how to nurse sick plants back to life. When he was about 13, he left to attend school and worked hard to get his education.
In 1894 he became the first Black person to graduate from Iowa State College, where he studied botany and fungal diseases, and later earned a master’s degree in agriculture. In 1896, Booker T. Washington offered him a teaching position at Tuskegee Institute, a college for African Americans.
John Lewis
How this congressman used ‘good trouble’ to fight for civil rights.
BY NICHOLAS ST. FLEUR
Growing up in the South during a time when Black people did not have the same rights as white people, John Lewis faced racial discrimination—and he did not like it. He fought for equality during the civil rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., against oppression and risking his life for justice. Through grit and determination, he went from sitting on bus seats as an act of civil disobedience during the Freedom Rides to sitting in the halls of Congress as a champion for civil liberties.
Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, in rural Alabama. His parents were sharecroppers who worked on a farm picking cotton for landowners. As a young boy, Lewis also picked cotton and did other farm duties with his family. It was hard work, but he enjoyed being with the chickens. Lewis wanted to be a pastor, so he would preach to his feathered flock in the chicken coop while tending to the hens and counting their eggs. His inspiration was King, whose words Lewis listened to on the radio.
Lewis studied at the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville and helped organize lunch sit-ins against segregated restaurants, where Black and white people could not eat together, Sometimes he’d be arrested for his actions, but Lewis accepted being thrown in jail for fighting for what is right, or “good trouble,” as he’d later call it. For instance, he was one of 13 original Freedom Riders, who travelled by bus to test laws that were supposed to protect Black people. But he was beaten and jailed several times on his journey.
Lewis was part of the Freedom Riders, a group of people who journeyed by bus to fight for civil rights. On May 14, 1961, one of the two original buses was firebombed by a mob of white people outside Anniston, Alabama.
Lewis’s most memorable act of “good trouble” occurred on March 7, 1965, when he led a group of 600 people across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, on what would be known as “Bloody Sunday.”
Lewis, who was then only 25 years old, marched across the bridge in the fight for equal voting rights for Black people. In his bag he carried just a toothbrush, toothpaste, two books, an orange, and an apple. But he and the other peaceful protesters were met by police officers carrying batons. The police fired tear gas onto the crowd and attacked them, leaving many bloody and wounded. Lewis was knocked unconscious.
The events of Bloody Sunday were caught on camera and televised to the country. They attracted more protests. King joined Lewis and thousands of other protesters to march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Their efforts eventually led to the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed the discriminatory practices that prevented many Black Americans from voting.
Lewis eventually became a congressman from Georgia in 1987, serving until his death from pancreatic cancer at the age of 80 on July 17, 2020. During his time in Congress he continued his work for civil rights and encouraged young people do the hard work necessary to change the country by getting into “good trouble.”
Mae C. Jemison
Astronaut and physician Mae Jemison was born October 17, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama, the youngest child of Charlie Jemison, and Dorothy (Green) Jemison. Jemison’s family moved to Chicago, Illinois, when Jemison was 3 years old to take advantage of better educational opportunities there, and it is that city that she calls her hometown. Throughout her early school years, her parents were supportive and encouraging of her talents and abilities, and Jemison spent considerable time in her school library reading about all aspects of science, especially astronomy. During her time at Morgan Park High School, she became convinced she wanted to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, and when she graduated in 1973 as a consistent honor student, she entered Stanford University on a National Achievement Scholarship.
At Stanford, Jemison received a B.S. in chemical engineering in 1977. As she had been in high school, Jemison was very involved in extracurricular activities including dance and theater productions, and served as head of the Black Student Union. Upon graduation, she entered Cornell University Medical College to work toward a medical degree. During her years there, she found time to expand her horizons by visiting and studying in Cuba and Kenya and working at a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand. When she obtained her M.D. in 1981, she interned at Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center and later worked as a general practitioner. For the next two and a half years, she was the area Peace Corps medical officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia where she also taught and did medical research. Following her return to the United States in 1985, she made a career change and decided to follow a dream she had nurtured for a long time. In October of that year she applied for admission to NASA’s astronaut training program. The Challenger disaster of January 1986 delayed the selection process, but when she reapplied a year later, Jemison was one of the 15 candidates chosen from a field of about 2,000.
When Jemison was chosen on June 4, 1987, she became the first African American woman ever admitted into the astronaut training program. After more than a year of training, she became an astronaut with the title of science mission specialist, a job which would make her responsible for conducting crew related scientific experiments on the space shuttle. On September 12, 1992, Jemison finally flew into space with six other astronauts aboard the Endeavour on mission STS47. During her eight days in space, she conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness on the crew and herself.
Altogether, she spent slightly over 190 hours in space before returning to Earth on September 20. Following her historic flight, Jemison noted that society should recognize how much both women and members of other minority groups can contribute if given the opportunity.
In recognition of her accomplishments, Jemison received several honorary doctorates, the 1988 Essence Science and Technology Award, the Ebony Black Achievement Award in 1992, and a Montgomery Fellowship from Dartmouth College in 1993, and was named Gamma Sigma Gamma Woman of the Year in 1990. Also in 1992, an alternative public school in Detroit, Michigan – the Mae C. Jemison Academy – was named after her. Jemison is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and served on the Board of Directors of the World Sickle Cell Foundation from 1990 to 1992.

February Fundraising Spotlight
This year our AVID seniors and two Leadership classes are raising money in partnership with CommuniCare. The target to wrap up fundraising and start the grant making process is the end of this month. Each of the three classes has a goal of $750 which CommuniCare will match 10X to award to chosen organizations. They also have an option to award some of the funding back to Benson programs. This year, there will be a $3,000 AVID Scholarship given, and many Benson clubs were granted funding for their activities from last year's Leadership class. Students have chosen to raise funds for social causes important to them. This is the mission statement from the AVID 12 students: "Benson Polytechnic High School will be granting money to organizations that provide services around gun violence and safety in Multnomah County. We believe our community is impacted by gun violence in many ways. We know Portland families and communities are suffering because the rate of deaths by guns has steadily increased during just our time in high school. We will focus on organizations that work to promote gun safety, prevent gun violence, and help individuals and families who have experienced the effects of gun violence – this can include, but is not limited to: gang-related homicide, domestic violence, and suicide. We would like to see increased safety in our community, and the rates of gun-related deaths decrease."
If you are in a position to assist with their fundraising efforts, you can contribute HERE on SchoolPay with a tax-deductible donation of any amount. All donations are greatly appreciated and will be generously matched by The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation.
If you would like to contribute to the Leadership classes' goal and their focus on mental health treatment, addiction and housing, HERE is that SchoolPay link.
Here is more information about CommuniCare and the Foundation.
Thank you for your consideration.

A Message from Benson Tech Construction Instructor Luke Hotchkiss
Never a dull moment in the Construction Department out in the Annex: Link to Construction Dept Photos
Sophomores: A new group rotated in at the start of the semester and started off with a scavenger hunt to get to know the space and a measurement stick to hone their measure and mark skills. Then they started a Napkin Holder project, and about 2/3 of them have already finished and even lasered personalized logos on the top.
Juniors: The grading deadline extension was clutch for the 11th graders in the major to complete their scale house. They produced a model of an 8'x12' shed in Sketchup and printed it out on the laser at 1/12th scale. The intent was to be more comfortable in Sketchup, and to increase their understanding of how the guts of a stick framed structure fit together. Next, their first project of 2nd semester is to make a coat/key rack shelf. They were given a Sketchup model and tasked with taking it apart and producing a step by step sequence of how they think they will build it in Sketchup, along with a Parts List and Materials List. On the Tiny House they have recently framed the upper clerestory wall and the smaller loft.
Seniors: The Seniors have completed the rough-in fresh water plumbing, and passed a water leak test. (on the 4th try) We have also been able to work outside a few days and completed the roofing on the bump-out bay. Inside they are working on building the cabinets for the house, some of which will also function as the stairs. They have completed material estimates for their senior projects, and on Friday the first batch of materials for those arrived and they spent most of the day figuring out where to store them.
Woodworking Elective: These students have been furiously working on building an end table. I have fewer pics because they have been running me ragged asking questions, many of which aren't covered in the directions that most students are actually using!

Dear Benson Tech Families,
Between March 13th and April 4th, 2024, Benson Tech students in grades 9-11 will be asked to take a short 10-15 minute survey developed by the Oregon Department of Education called the Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey.
The survey is designed to capture students’ sense of belonging and experience at school. It also asks students about their experiences in class, their access to resources, and what they have learned. Survey results are used by the Oregon Department of Education to create more equitable learning experiences for students and to inform state and local education investment decisions.

Important Attendance Information and Updates
District policy states that students have 3 school days to resolve absences.
Transportation via Portland Public Schools (school bus) are excused tardies.
If the student doesn't let the attendance office know that this is why they are tardy, there is no way to know. The office does not track who is on what bus or whether they are present.
There is a code for Late Bus (LBS) which can be marked to excuse that type of tardy.
Tardies for emergency situations in getting to school (vehicle malfunctions, police action and other types of emergencies) may also be excused but again, the office will need to be made aware of these,
Tardies due to missing a bus, getting up late, etc. are not excused tardies.
To reach attendance, you can call 503-916-5100 X86271 and/or email bensonattend@pps.net

An Important Message from TriMet
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This is about MAX closures from Jan. 14-Feb.25 along I-84 and the Gateway Transit Center. This is likely to impact students that attend Benson Tech.
TriMet is preparing to put the finishing touches on our A Better Red construction at the Gateway/NE 99th Ave Transit Center, capping off a major part of a project that broke ground in September 2021. To reach this milestone, the Gateway Transit Center will be closed to trains from Jan. 14 through Feb. 25. During that time, crews will connect the new track and systems that were previously constructed just north of the transit center, and they’ll get the new Gateway North station ready for service beginning on Monday, Feb. 26. We encourage those who ride MAX Blue, Green and Red lines to use alternative modes of transportation during the disruption. MAX will not serve the Gateway Transit Center while construction is taking place, with MAX Blue and Green lines disrupted and MAX Red Line suspended. More.

A Message from the Yearbook Advisor Greg Huntington
Hello Benson Tech High School Parents,
Benson Tech 2024 Yearbook Business for Everyone:
Preferred Names: The Benson Blueprint Yearbook will be using the “preferred names” that we have in our attendance system. If that name is inaccurate and your student goes by something else, please email ghunting@pps.net. Use the subject header, ‘preferred name’. Include their last name and student ID number, as well as the name they want printed in the yearbook.
Reserving a 2024 Yearbook: Haven’t ordered yet?? Follow THIS LINK.
Yearbook Business JUST FOR SENIROS!
Senior Portraits: Did you have a senior portrait taken? You can submit that photo for the yearbook, free of charge. Follow THIS LINK to upload the image. Deadline January 20th, 2024.
Interested in getting a senior portrait taken, but didn’t want to shell out for a professional studio? Benson Photography Dept. can help! They will set up a pop-up studio, free of charge in January. If you’re interested, email ghunting@pps.net. Include the subject header: ‘Pop-up photography for (senior’s name)’ for more information.
Senior Ads: Benson Tech families of seniors can now reserve a space in their graduate’s yearbook and personalize it with photos, well wishes, and support. A quarter-page space is $45 and all proceeds go towards providing yearbooks for Benson Tech community members who wouldn’t have been able to afford one otherwise. One ad supports one student. Show your love for your graduating senior and the wider Benson Tech community at the same time!
Follow THIS LINK to learn more.
Congrats (in advance) to the class of 2024!

A Message from the Benson Tech Leadership Class
Dear Benson Tech Families,
The Benson Tech Leadership Classes are raising funds for our Portland community in collaboration with Communicare. Our mission intends support for addiction, mental health, and housing as we view these crises as interlinked. You can support our efforts by picking up a BLUE Bottle Drop bag in the front office. Simply fill the pre-tagged bag with your recycled cans or bottles and drop them at any Bottle Drop accepting location. By donating these items, Communicare matches our donation 10 fold, essentially making each recycled bottle or can worth $1 each to support local nonprofits!
We would greatly appreciate your support in our efforts to make a positive change within our community.
Sincerely,
The Benson Tech Leadership classes

An Important Message from the Benson Tech PE Department
Benson Tech 9th Grade Families,
Welcome to Benson Polytechnic High School! We look forward to working with you and your student during this upcoming school year. We as the Fit 2 Live & Learn Team are excited to bring you one of the most unique and comprehensive Physical Education and Health experiences in the state. In order to provide this experience, we ask that you provide Freshman Safety Equipment and Field Trip donations if possible. This is in place of “fees” that are typically charged and goes directly towards safety equipment such as uniforms and provides experiences like bowling, etc. that promote school climate and pride throughout the freshman class and Benson Tech as a whole.
Please help us in supporting our PE Department with a $20 donation that we will utilize for PE Uniforms and Equipment for our freshman PE students. Just click on the link and it will take you directly to SchoolPay where you can make your donation to the Benson Tech PE department. https://pps.schoolpay.com/pay/for/Benson--PE--9th-Grade-Uniforms/SdXKDdQ
Thank you in advance for your support!
Go Astros!
