Mustang News - October 25, 2024
From The Principal
We have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with so many families during conferences today and yesterday–we have had record participation! It has been powerful to have the chance to celebrate so many students as well as partner with families to support students finishing the semester (and the year) strong!
A big congratulations to our Girls and Boys Cross Country teams who both qualified for State! Additionally, the Girls Cross Country Team won 1st place in their 3A Regional meet! Additionally, well done to our Boys Soccer and Volleyball teams (and soon to be Football team) celebrating their Senior Nights! The teamwork, leadership, work ethic, joy that our student athletes have exhibited this season is truly monumental. Thank you to all of our coaches for the immense time, energy, and love that you invest in our students and programs!
As part of our commitment to providing the best experience for our students and families, we’re conducting a Parent/Caregiver Experience Survey in partnership with Studer Education. Your feedback will help us understand what’s working well and where we can improve. The survey takes about 10–15 minutes to complete, and you can fill it out for each school your children attend. It will be open from October 21 – November 1.
You can access the survey here: https://forms.hcg.com/f/41753602/1402/
Or scan the QR code below,
Or it was also sent your email.
Have a great weekend! We hope to see many of you at Key Club’s Haunted House from 6-8 pm on Sunday, 10/27!

A Word From the World Language Department
As part of the lesson Halloween vs. Día De Los Muertos, Spanish 1 students learned about the similarities and differences between these two holidays. Also, as part of the cultural immersion, the students are working on their version of Ofrendas, celebrating the life of loved ones that have passed away or famous hispanic personalities that have had a positive impact in the hispanic community when they were alive. The written part of the project is that students need to write (3) sentences, in the target language and present tense, stating the name of the person being celebrated, their birth date, and how they are related to that person. Students also needed to write (6) sentences, in the target language and present tense, using the correct conjugation of the verbs SER / TENER / LLEVAR, as discussed in class, 2 sentences per verb, describing the person being celebrated. Finally, students will create a voice memo where they will practice pronunciation by reading their sentences in Spanish. All the ofrendas will be displayed in the World Language hallway from October 28th until November 1st.

A Word From AP Literature
On Wednesday, Oct 23, Mrs. Kerrigan's AP Lit class had their first Socratic Seminar or the novel Frankenstein at the local cemetery. Students discussed the first part of the novel using Critical Lens Theory and enjoyed some novel themed snacks!
A Word From The English Department
Mr. Walker, English teacher at the high school, and Mrs. Dunlap, Art teacher at MSES, saw an opportunity for collaboration when they were brought together on the Art's Integration Committee. Mrs. Dunlap had just completed the Manitou Monsters project, where kindergartners create monsters with a specific list of attributes and then draw them, and then over the summer each student is paired with a local artist who creates a version of that monster in their own medium, and then the results are displayed in a gallery the following year.
Mr. Walker was just about to begin a unit on Beowulf. His English IV seniors are going to put Beowulf on trial for the crime of Monstrosity, so they are beginning to study monsters and monstrosity in literature. Monsters exist to police the moral and social boundaries of the societies that create them. Seeing an opportunity, Mr. Walker brought his seniors down to the elementary school, where they picked three monsters to study. Using the monster's traits to determine the social boundaries that the monsters subvert or enforce, Mr. Walker's seniors reverse-engineered the society that would create the monster. For instance, a monster that eats watermelon would come from a society that was concerned about the responsible consumption of the earth's resources.
It was a fun day, with seniors reminiscing about their days in elementary school, using their imaginations, and taking advantage of the proximity and unique artistic environment of Manitou Springs!
