March 19th, 2025
Dear Woodlawn Families,
We had an exciting day at Woodlawn today! Not only was it “Dress Fancy Day” and an early release, but we had a visit from the Superintendent and a Bookmobile. Twenty-five students earned a visit with the Superintendent for their reading skills growth and all students in grades 1-5 selected a book to keep and had a popsicle-dance party. Dr. Armstrong’s “Lift Literacy” campaign has begun and she chose Woodlawn for one of her first few stops.
We are excited to invite you to our celebration of poetry and spoken word on Thursday as we wrap up the month of March and host Poetry Slam! This beloved annual event showcases the courage and ownership in learning of our young Wildcats. So many students are practicing poems and they are ready to shine on stage. Join us if you can! We love an audience and it’s not a requirement to participate in the performances to attend.
Spring Break begins Monday. We hope everyone enjoys some fun with family and friends. Don’t forget to read and write while away from school! We return to school on Monday, March 31st. This is the day we will assess our library collection to determine if we met our goal of recovering nearly 200 overdue and/or missing titles. Help us reach our goal by checking all of your favorite reading spaces and locating any and all library books. Books checked out this week do not count towards being overdue as they should be returned the first week of April during Library time.
When we return, we will welcome a new member to our staff. Deven Walker will join our team as a High Impact Tutor. Deven will work with students in grades K-3 to improve their reading skills.
Take a look at the school calendar because we return to 2 four-day weeks, back to back. Friday, April 4th and Monday April 7th are not school days. The staff will be working on 3rd quarter report cards and will be lesson planning to kick off the 4th quarter. From there it will be 9 weeks until the end of the school year.
There’s still a lot of the school year left! Keep up the great work, Wildcats!
Mrs. Porter-Lopez and Mrs. Tyner

OBOB RESULTS
Make sure to congratulate our Woodlawn OBOB team. At regionals, they advanced to the top 16 teams with the fourth highest score. We’re proud of you Jazz, Lucy, Cimone, Sylvan and Will E-H!
LIFT LITERACY BOOKMOBILE VISIT
Woodlawn School is one of only a few schools in the district to be chosen for a very special visit from our Superintendent Armstrong today! Dr. Armstrong will be visiting with her Lift Literacy Bookmobile from 11:15-11:45am to pass out books, popsicles and Golden Keys to just a few of our Wildcats. Ask your student to tell you about the visit.
RECESS HELP
We would LOVE some volunteers to help play with students during their lunch/recess time between 11a-12:30p. Kickball, Four Square, basketball, soccer, or a creative activity would be great. This is a unique opportunity to spend extra time with your child in their school element. You must have gone through the PPS Volunteer Background Check. Let us know if you can join the fun!
AFFINITY GROUPS
Looking to find more community within Woodlawn? The PTA wants to help revive affinity groups! Affinity groups are identity-based spaces where families with a shared background, experience or marginalized identity can connect in an inclusive and supportive environment. Some examples would be Black, LGBTQ+, and Latinx affinity spaces. If you're interested or already have an informal gathering and would like better communication and support from the PTA and the school, please reach out to CéShaun Hankins, PTA Vice President, at woodlawnschoolpta@gmail.com Attention "Affinity Group".
