"It's a great day to be a Panther"

Monday, March 10th through Friday, March 14th
Principals Message
Happy Friday DKMS families! It was another great week in the middle school!
Today was the last day of our second trimester. Monday our students will be starting their final RASL class of the year. Seventh and eighth grade students will have a new P1 class, while fifth and sixth grade students will have a new P2 class. With the start of the third trimester on Monday, there are only 12 weeks of school left. It is important that students finish strong academically and behaviorally so they remain eligible for sports as well as for the end of the year field trips each grade level takes.
Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday March 13, 2025. I mistakenly stated that conferences will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Conferences will only be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. You may select a teacher's name from the list below and sign up for a conference time. Time slots are limited, but if you have questions about your child's progress please feel free to email those to your child's teachers if you are unable to attend conferences.

Amy BoorsmaAs always I would like to thank our students, staff, families, and community for all of their hard work. Each passing week we get closer and closer to the finish line. Our students have made a lot of growth academically and socially throughout this year and that is because of the hard work everyone puts in each and everyday. We all still have lots of great things to get done these last 12 weeks and I'm truly excited to see our school finish strong! Have a great weekend and warmer weather is on the horizon!
It's a great day to be a PANTHER!!!
Thank you,

Thanks to Mr. Gailey, New Art Equipment is Here!
We have some exciting news to share! Mr. Gailey, our middle school art teacher, successfully wrote a grant request to the Delton Educational Enrichment Fund. As a result, our art classroom was able to order a pottery wheel and a 3D printer!
The new pottery wheel will give students the chance to dive into ceramics and create their own pottery pieces. The 3D printer will allow them to design and create three-dimensional objects, opening up a lot of new creative possibilities.
A big thank you to Mr. Gailey and the Barry Community Foundation for making this happen. We are all excited to see the new creative projects in the works!

8th Grade STEM Class: Paper Roller Coaster Challenge
In Mr. Bates’ 8th Grade STEM class, students built paper roller coasters with the goal of being able to keep a marble moving as long as possible. Students focused on speed, acceleration, momentum, and G-forces. Mr. Bates challenged the class to beat his own roller coaster time, upping the ante and sparking some healthy competition.
Winning Team:
- Team Members: Tyler Cichy, Maddox Doubledee, Lucas Doubledee, Isaiah Whitney
- Winning Time: 30.88 seconds
- Margin of Victory: 13.75 seconds over Mr. Bates roller coaster
- Class Average Time: 11.4 seconds
- Bates Time: 27.87 seconds
This team was the only one to beat Mr. Bates’ time! Their competitive spirit paid off. Congrats to Tyler, Maddox, Lucas, and Isaiah for their hard work and creativity. Mr. Bates made it a tough challenge, but they rose to it!

Staff Spotlight
Who makes up your family?
My family consists of my husband, Rick, and our three children: Memphis, Riley, and Ivee. We also share our home with one dog, two cats, and a tortoise.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
My superpower would be weather manipulation, so we could enjoy summer all year round.
Do you have a go-to comfort food or favorite treat?
My go-to comfort food would be Dots pretzels, and I’m also a big fan of Pull 'n Peel Cherry Twizzlers.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love reading and spending quality time with my family.
Do you have a favorite book or author?
My favorite book has always been Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan.
How long have you been a part of this school community?
This is my second year at DKS. I started as a para in the elementary school, and now I work in PSR at the middle school.
What is your favorite thing about working in this school?
I love watching the kids grow and accomplish new things.
If you were not in education, what would you be doing?
I started out in nursing, but I’m currently in college to become a social worker, so I’d probably be pursuing one of those two fields.
Can you share a memorable or inspiring moment you’ve had with a student?
One of the most memorable moments is seeing the look on a child’s face when they learn something new that they didn’t think they could do. The light that shines from a child who just learned how to read or do math is my reason why.
What is something about our school or community that you appreciate the most?
I really appreciate the amount of support we show each other, both personally and professionally.
What is something you have learned from students that has impacted you?
I've learned that you can go through hard things, overcome challenges, and still be a positive, successful human.

PIE is excited to announce that their fundraising website is now live! Each grade level has its own unique code , making it easy for students to participate.
