The Dolphin Whistle
January 15, 2020 Issue 20
Thursday, January 16, 2020 is a Minimum Day! Pick up your children at 12:25pm
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LAMBERT
Dear Parents,
There are two important topics for my message this week. First, we have noticed that parents are leaving their cars in the entrance lane to the parking lot. This is not permitted as it blocks access to larger emergency vehicles. Please leave enough time to park on the streets in the area around the school and walk in to pick up your child. Do not block the fire lane or parking lot traffic.
Second, after Jan. 13 parents may access the results from the i-Ready Diagnostic #2
i-Ready is the online program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth in mathematics and reading. You will be able to access the results from the i-Ready Diagnostic #2 that children took in December. Look for an email with specific directions about how to access the results through the PowerSchool Parent Portal (https://ps.mvwsd.org/public/).There are four reports (two for math and two for English language arts). One report will show your student’s overall score and growth since August, and a detailed report will show how your student performed on each grade-level standard, in math and language arts. You can review this information and talk with your teacher about how to support and enrich your child’s learning.
Your child can access i-Ready instruction at home online anytime through Clever. These lessons supplement core instruction, and support and enrich students' learning. They are individualized for each student, based on information from their i-Ready assessments. Please ask your teacher if you have trouble accessing i-Ready.
Best Regards,
Theresa Lambert

The MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents William Stixrud, M.D. and Ned Johnson on "The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Kids More Control Over Their Lives" on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020 - 7:00 - 9:00pm | MVHS Spartan Theater | 3535 Truman Ave., Mountain View
Evidence strongly suggests that age-appropriate autonomy is vital for young people’s mental health—it helps them to sculpt brains that are resilient, resourceful, and ready to take on new challenges.
When The Self-Driven Child authors Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson discovered a common problem among their young clients: kids were feeling acutely stressed. Some stumbled in high school, while others hit college and unraveled. Bill is a clinical neuropsychologist who helps kids gripped by anxiety or struggling to learn. Ned is a motivational coach who runs an elite tutoring service. Together they discovered that the best antidote to stress is to give kids a sense of control. In this talk, Bill and Ned advise that parents and educators adopt the role of consultant rather than manager to give kids more responsibility for their own life decisions even before they leave home.
Audience: Parents and educators of students grades 6 - 12.

i- Ready
New, and important for parents to know:
In January, parents will receive four reports (two for math and two for English language arts): One report will show your student’s overall score and growth since August (take a look here), and a detailed report (look at the report here) will show how your student performed on each grade-level standard, in math and language arts. You can review this information and talk with your teacher about how to support and enrich your child’s learning.
Your child can access i-Ready instruction at home online anytime through Clever to supplement, reinforce and enrich his/her classroom learning (exception: i-Ready instruction is not available at home during diagnostic testing). These lessons supplement core instruction, and support and enrich students' learning. They are tailored to students, based on information from their i-Ready assessments. Please ask your teacher if you have trouble accessing i-Ready.
Please visit www.mvwsd.org/ireadyreport to view sample reports and frequently asked questions. Thank you for your partnership with us in your student’s success.
ThoughtExchange: Middle School start times
Senate Bill 328 was recently passed that requires middle schools to start at or after 8 a.m. (effective 2022). Each of our middle schools start before 8 a.m. - Graham at 7:50 a.m. and Crittenden at 7:55 a.m.
Since November, the District has been in the process of reaching out to parents and staff members to gather feedback about later middle school start times. MVWSD would like to further engage parents, staff members and students in grades 5-8 in an online exchange of ideas about the considerations and priorities for new middle school start times, with possible implementation for the 2020-21 school year.
Look for an email, and thank you in advance for your participation.
