Port Susan Middle School
Family & Student Update for 10.01.23
Positive Connections
As we worked with students and families this past week, the importance of connections to our school beyond the classroom (online and out in our community) is continually encouraged. As you know, we not only educate our students with engaging learning activities in the classroom, but we also encourage positive interactions with one another and choices they make outside our structured learning environment. As stated in our promise, the importance of being their best self in all they do in school as well as outside in the greater community will allow our students to be prepared for the future of their choice. Thank you for your encouragement and communication regarding the positive impact they make daily.

Sports Highlights
Cross Country
Stanwood United had their second meet of the season at Port Nugent Park in Oak Harbor. This 1.5 mile true cross country course is a fun one. Most of our athletes improved their race times! We'll have a meet a week now until the end of the season and it's exciting to watch these middle school athletes as they rely on their training to break personal records.
Varsity Soccer
The girls soccer teams had two games this week, one was in Anacortes and the other at SHS.
If you like wet rainy weather, Monday's match was the game for you! The Port Susan Knights battled a very tough Anacortes team on Monday. The Knights played hard against a strong defense and managed to get one shot into the back of the net. Our play was resilient and the girls never stopped trying their best. It goes to show, you won't win every game but you walk away winning if you have given it your all! Mrs. Titus is really proud of this team and how hard they work. The honor the game bracelet goes to Leise for her amazing effort and example of team leadership she shows every day. Way to go Knights! The Port Susan JV Soccer team played an exciting match vs the Anacortes Seahawks and beat them by a score of 10-0. The Knights worked so well as a team and were able to keep the Hawks off their end of the field. The Knights got several shots on goal and gave a great effort. The honor of the game bracelet goes to Sam. She comes to every practice with a great attitude and works hard. Way to go Knights!
JV Soccer
On Wednesday, the Port Susan JV Soccer team played an exciting back and forth battle with Stanwood Middle School. The Knights were able to score in the first half and their amazing defense kept the Spartans from scoring. The Knights beat the Spartans by a score of 1-0. The Honor the game bracelet goes to Valeria for her awesome attitude. She works hard and is a great teammate. Way to go Knights! The Knights varsity team battled tough against the Spartans. We had several opportunities on goal but came up short on scoring. Our defense played hard and the offense worked well to produce chances to score. The Honor the game bracelet goes to Emily E. for her great play in goal and her positive attitude and leadership on the field. Way to go Knights!

Staff Shout Out
In honor of National School Custodian Day on October 2nd, we are celebrating our PSMS custodians this week, Annette and Trevor. They do a fabulous job and work endlessly to keep our school clean, and we truly appreciate their hard work. Annette has worked at PSMS for two years, and says she loves being at PSMS because the staff and students are great to work with. In her spare time, Annette enjoys spending time with her baby (almost 1 year old). Trevor has worked at PSMS for the last year. He loves the staff here, especially Mrs. Zurcher because he gets treats from the student's cooking projects. In his spare time Trevor enjoys golf, and watching the Silvertips and Aquasox play. Thank you Annette and Trevor for all your hard work!

District Information
New fentanyl warning
Local law enforcement officials have issued new warnings after “rainbow” fentanyl pills were recently found in Snohomish County.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has also issued warnings about the “alarming emerging trend of colorful fentanyl” in the country that officials worry is aimed toward young people.
It is critical families understand the dangers of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times more potent than morphine. Authorities are increasingly seeing a wide variety of other drugs being laced with fentanyl — such as traditional prescription opioids such as oxycodone and hydrocodone or illegal opioids like heroin.
A lethal dose of fentanyl may be less than 2 milligrams, the size of four grains of salt.
Fentanyl overdose deaths are skyrocketing. In 2021, there were more fentanyl overdose deaths than all other drug overdose deaths combined, according to the CDC. Synthetic opioids — mostly fentanyl — now kill more Americans every year than died in the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars combined.
In response to this crisis, our district stocks the opioid reversal medication Naloxone on each campus. It is accessible with our automated external defibrillator (AED) units.
